  • After politely saying "NO THANKS" for over a year, my wife takes Tesla's FSD 12.3.4 out for her first spin. How does this self-professed "type A control freak" react to a self-driving car?

One other note - at the very end, when you're in the parking lot, you could have had her use the auto park feature - it's SO cool and works really well - I could see the valid parking spaces showing up as you drove slowly through the parking lot - they show up as a highlighted gray rectangle with a "P" in the middle of the rectangle ... all you do is select any of those "P" rectangles - it will then highlight in blue ... you just stop your car (and it doesn't matter if you are past the parking space you chose or right next to it or not even advanced to that parking space yet) ... the gray start button will then turn blue after your car has been fully stopped and at that point, the car will just park itself by backing into the parking space - at this time, it only backs into a parking space - and those parking spaces must be the "straight" variety (as opposed to "slanted" parking spaces that you see in some parking lots) ... also, the car will do the same thing on a street where it needs to parallel park - you'll see the same gray rectangles with the "P" show up when you're under a certain speed limit (it's something under 10 mph) - and you do the same thing - just select the "P" that you want, then bring the car to a full stop, hit the blue "start" button and it will do an amazing job of parallel parking, too - the auto park feature is not that fast at this point - but it's dead accurate and will be sped up in one of the upcoming releases, so it'll be able to auto park as fast as any human would be able to park the car - and it's so precise, too - I've never seen it fail yet!

She has used it for parallel parking! She really enjoys the feature.

I've been using the right scroll wheel to turn off the nag with just a move forward and back every so often. I've been using sunglasses and the nag seems fairly regular. I find the scroll wheel much easier to use than the steering wheel tug because I keep my right hand on the wheel most of the time.
I've enjoyed watching FSD driving me around town.
At $99/mo, I can see this being a pretty normal add on but other than an occasional look-see, I'll wait for the finalized version before subscribing permanently. I'm 81 now and believe this will become a major plus for older drivers.
Oddly enough, FSD drives faster than me. Since getting my 2021 M3 LR I've noticed I generally drive at the speed limit but in my G35, I'm always faster than the speed limit. I think it's the EV power train and wonderful speed control which feels very natural.

Thanks for sharing. Yes I will note that in my next video. Sometimes I’m afraid I’ll get a ticket with all the speed cameras in my town.

@@FSDwithme I've seen it 10 mph over the speed limit quite often. That's too fast for me and I don't like it.
I was going to look into what my options are with FSD but with the demo expiring soon, it's on the back burner.
All that said, I've been very impressed with FSD overall.

You can choose to do a manual offset where you decide how much over it goes. Try it out!

Her reaction is probably typical of most first time users. I would not be surprised if many do not persevere because that first experience may give the impression that using FSD will actually be less relaxing. First timers really need someone like you to encourage them to persevere.

Good point. It is definitely not more relaxing at first. I used it a lot for long highway drives where it was very relaxing. V12 is definitely more comforting than previous versions.

Thx for sharing! Funny to see your wife‘s hands hovering close to the wheel most of the time

Nice first drive with FSD! It takes a while to get used to it. I’m trying it with chill mode and assertive fsd setting, it’s better, but still a fair number of interventions. I still have 12.3.3, and hoping to try out 12.3.4 soon.

For both you and your wife - you can just toggle either of the scroll wheels instead of making a slight tug on the steering wheel (which can take you out of FSD if you tug too hard, of course) - I find just moving either scroll wheel up a notch and then back down a notch will do the job ... or if you are in Auto Set Speed (very cool feature!), then you can just move the right scroll wheel up or down as much as you want - and it won't affect the speed, of course (unless you are on the highway or freeway, where FSD v11 is still being used at this time) ... try the scroll wheels - you'll never go back to tugging on the steering wheel - until they remove that idiotic nag one of these days!

    Beats driving while Asian. 😉
Seriously--I'd suggest keeping eye on simulation screen to observe what it's intending to do.
