    Wow, that's cool.
Great speakers as always, funny but also very clear and informative.
    Thanks a lot

Prepare to be shocked: Me and my friends once played a Puerto Rico game that tied even after applying the Tie Breakers!

You never explained why 3 player and being third is broken.

I'm ranked #24 on the online leaderboard for puerto rico. I highly disagree with a few statements here.
    1. The Guild Hall is MUCH better than the city hall. If you say have a small indigo and a small sugar and a cofee initially, the guild hall+tobacco+Large sugar/indigo is 21 Victory ponts for 4 buildings and 22 dubloons, you'll get an 8 dubloon discount from your 2 quarries, The City hall doesn't come close to that level of power.
    2. Under modern theory, the factory/harbor combo never happens. If you get a factory the other players will get a harbor before you get your harbor up. The typical timing for the harbor is the 3rd or 4th building a player builds In fact in with 8 cost factory the factory gets built less often than the Large market! With 7 cost factory the factory is still qutie slow. The harbor has become the dominant building and play revolves around rushing the harbor and cutting in line to get one. The ONLY viable strategies under modern theory are Harbor strategies and double quarry guild hall.
    3. You didn't cover opening theory which is highly important, if you don't have the first 3-4 rounds Memorized you aren't going to win a match.
    4. You somehow had the hacienda as a real building, in modern games the hacienda and construction hut are only used as 2 cost 1 point buildings built to end the game. All row 2 buildings other than the large market are also similarly unplayable except as victory points (though large indigo plant has good vp/price ratio)
    5. somehow (probably due to space concerns) you had 4-5p played as the dominant player count, 5p is a sick joke and 4p is considered the least well balenced due to seat positioning problems, 3p is far superior at being less left/right defined.

thanks for the great insight. Do you have any suggestions for opening theory? i take it like chess those will set you up for victory or disaster

      Principles to know
      1. Quarries are the Strongest plantation, worth roughly 1.2 dubloons a piece
      2. Colonists are worth a lot as well, but hard to say if they are better than 1 dubloon
      3. Money is the dominant resource of PR, a player needs 1 "big" money source and 2 "small" money sources before their income is setup. Big sources = Coffee Roaster, large market, Factory and small ones = Quarries/Small market a good heuristic is you'll need 6 dubloons after every single role gets picked once. Note that trader income from large markets dries up late in the game while factories keep on kicking.but in general the rule works well
      Rule #1 of openings
openings end after the Mayor phase after the builder phase after the second settler phase. After that point the game has too many branches to go on.
      Rule #2 of openings
The lines many people play result in player 2 having a massive disadvantage, I will be proposing lines of play from each position assuming players follow a standard path, but I will also be proposing you personally follow a non standard path. in a turn a / represents the next player and () represents the options that are reasonable for that player Numbers represent that players seat position
      The first moves Modern mainline
      1. Settler Quarry / (Corn>Sugar>Tobacco) / (Corn>sugar>coffee>indigo there's some consideration to indigo>coffee but coffee is really strong)
      2. Builder Small market if corn Sugar mill if not/Small market/Small market>Nothing>indigo plant
      3 Mayor (Corn+Corn>Corn+Small market) / (Corn>small market) / Quarry
From here we get a divergence
      The Trader as prospector game
      2. Trader
      3. Craft
      1. Captain (put on 5 boat as p2)
      Divergence 2 Tobacco Gambit accepted
      3. Settler (quarry/Tobacco/Sugar)
      1. Builder (tobacco/Sugar/indigo)
      2. Mayor (Small market+Small Sugar/Indigo+Small market/Tobacco)
      1. Craftsman
      2. Trader
      Tobacco Gambit Declined
      3. Builder (Indigo plant or sugar mill even if no indigo in play)/Indigo plant/Indigo or nothing
      1. Mayor (Quarry+indigo/corn+small market/ indigo or sugar+small market or double corn+small market)
      2. Settler Quarry / Whatever you prebuilt or tobacco or Coffee / corn>Tobacco>Sugar>Coffee
The Double Settler (the better line)
      2. Settler (quarry / Corn> Sugar/indigo if not taken t1 coffee/tobacco if sugar or indigo taken t1/ Corn>Sugar>Coffee>tobacco)
      3. Craft
      1. Captain
      3 Trader
      1. Builder (Depends on plantation what is built, frequently small sugar ) / (Pass (you have a quarry as p2 just wait ))/ (indigo or sugar)
      2. Mayor (Quarry+Corn+Small market or Quarry+Small Sugar depending on luck) / (Small indigo +small market (if no 2nd corn) or 2x corn 1x small market if possible, though 1x corn 1x sugar is also a playable line) / Sugar (if monopoly) or lone quarry. (if no monopoly)

I saw this game on a gift store in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and did not think it was like a top game to play. It really looks interesting after seeing this videos of you guys. I definitely would try it. By the way, when will next Revolutionary Utena Analysis video come up? Please make it soon am anxious about it.

OMG!! THIS IS THE BEST BOARD GAME VIDEO EVER!! FUCK EVERYTHING. Finally a clear video explaining what player should do and various strategy. I played this game 3 times 6+ month apart and spent all my times trying to remember how to play, not how to win. Thank you!
Do you play on tabletop? Can you teach me what I am doing incorrectly not just this game but other bg too?

Moving "towards the other side kf a board" is such a bad heuristic for chess! Another episode of "board gamers use chess analogiem that dont work if you actually chess"

    • @GeekNightsRym
      @GeekNightsRym  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think you quite understood.
It's a better heuristic than "literally nothing." It's better than acting literally randomly.
Someone who knows NOTHING and acts randomly, versus someone who tries to move their pieces, generally, toward the other side of the board, will lose more often than not.

    • @dago6410
      @dago6410 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@GeekNightsRym Well, if they both have no idea what they are doing, then it will still be a draw SO OFTEN that i dont think it would matter. I toitally get your point, I am not sure if your analogy works LITERALLY, but yes, of course I knwo what you mean.
