I’m brand new to your channel today. I graduated in 89. Skid Row came to Montana in July of that year. So for my bday(7th of July) my girlfriend got not just tickets to see them, but back stage passes! And to hear this man live, cannot be described! Meeting him, back then was like meeting a Rock God. He was told it was my bday, and that the big surprise wasn’t the concert, but the passes. He got the entire Band to gather around, completely hose me down with a bottle of Champagne. Then all sang Happy Birthday to me. And in heavy metal fashion! Was given a “Skid Row” roadie jacket. Signed by all. 2 drumsticks, signed. About 10 guitar picks, with SB on them. And just a bunch of Skid Row gear I still have to this day. He said they had a couple hours to kill, asked me what was best go. And ended the night closing down only bar in town that played live Rock music. Best Bday ever.

As a rock and metal music fan who always looks for the best vocals... I do, man, I really do. And nowadays I really miss that kind of vocals. After grunge and Nirvana hype many bands started playing simple and sing simple, with not so high skills and wide range like e.g Sebastian has. So I'm still looking for the best vocals in rock/metal music cause we HAVE to appreciate it.

    • @sharonspiller7427

@@poinsettia12I thought the same thing until recently. I was loving life with all the metal/rock/glam in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Resented nirvana like you can’t imagine…I’ve come to really appreciate Layne Staley lately. Always loved Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder.
For great rock vocals you may not have heard, I’d encourage you to check out Spread Eagle, particularly Switchblade Serenade and Through These Eyes. There were so many bands in the 90’s, they kind of got overlooked. Great rock sound, strong vocalist.

I think they wanted the sung note to blend with the end of the guitar solo. If you notice, the solo starts with the guitarist playing a phrase that emphasizes the last sung note before it. It’s like a passing of the baton on both ends.

Scotti's solo was amazing and no one knew what to make of the off-note squeal at the end of the solo but we absolutely loved it! This song was most people's introduction to Sebastian Bach and he had the best pipes in Hard Rock imo. No one can ever say Sebastian Bach is underrated, as a vocalist of that era...but it can definitely be said he was underappreciated. "Hair bands" were wildly popular on the 80s, but vocalists like him were extremely rare. Sure, there were really good front men, and many could definitely carry a tune...even do it well. But few had the range and ability that Sebastian Bach and Geoff Tate had. But even still, they were always overshadowed by vocalists like Steve Perry, when it came to acknowledging true vocal talent.

What was not to like - simple but briliant lyrics, powerful and fun music that wasn't too complex yet let you know you're dealing with good musicians, catchy melodies and impressive soloes, and the singer - a beautiful specimen with a whale of hair and irresistible smile, with a voice that could tear down the walls of Jericho, guy who could go through two or three octaves in one phrase, modulating from a sweet whisper through a crescendo while going into lower tones and from rasp to crispy clear and back and did it with ease and in full control of his tool, looking as if this was about as hard to him as typing "YEAH!" is to me. Quite a number of great singers in hard rock at that time - but only he, David Coverdale, Klause Meine, and in a (different) way Axl Rose made it look so effortless. I'd say - goosebumps, and and tingles down my spine, - that was what I loved about two first albums by Skid Row.
Oh- and the song does not yet fully display his range. It showcases the best of his tonal range and gives a hint of his power and textural tools.

I've loved this band since they started! Had there posters on my walls! This one brings back so many memories! I think Wasted Time shows off his vocals even more! Sebastian is so talented. I believe he was on Broadway and on Gilmore Girls. 😊

To hear his range many are suggesting “Wastes Time”. And absolutely agree. But SO MANY songs on very 1st album ROCKED! “Youth Gone Wild, 18 and Life, Here I Am, Sweet Lil Sister, Piece of Me, Makin a Mess”. Then “Monkey Business , Slave to the Grind”. Pick a song, any song. I’m here for it!! So ROCK ON!! Also I’m a huge ACDC -Bonn Scott, Brian Johnson -Angus Young FAN A TIC!!

Because they can (Sebastian), Skid Row leads into the guitar solo from a vocal high note and leads back into a vocal high note. Stunning stuff actually.

Skid Row was one of the first bands I was into after I discovered music. Their song “18 and Life” was absolutely my jam. And over the years it’s become more clear to me, that besides the band rocking hard, Sebastian Bach is a tremendous singer.

I was 20 years old when this came out, fully immersed in the metal culture back then. Skid Row was probably the last great hair metal band to hit the scene before progressive, alternative, grunge, et al. started overtaking the music world.
After an entire decade of great metal music (and new wave), Sebastian was a wonderful way to end an era.
He was one of the most powerful metal voices ever. I highly recommend you listen to 18 and Life, then Wasted Years, next. That will give you his three best.
    God bless. 🤟😎

Sebastian’s crowning achievements for me as far as range goes is ‘Quicksand Jesus’ and ‘Livin On A Chain Gang’ which vocally are off the scale! Other songs are ‘Wasted Time’ and ‘Monkey Business’. But don’t get too hyper about the live performances. I’m not saying he was bad by any means but the bar he set himself and having to perform most nights at that level, the results aren’t always the best.

Truth is some singers (or even bands) are not very good live and conversely it is also true some are better live. In the studio even back then studio magic through technology and various sorts of cheating such as doing multiple takes and then blending the best parts to make a supreme outcome are often done. Queen could never replicate live Bohemian Rhapsody because of studio magic. Steve Perry in his hey day rarely ever has had a bad vocal day if ever and his songs are mighty challenging. Look for a dodgy Steve Perry vocal in his prime on TH-cam and you won't find one. Some singers bring it upon themselves for not being good live for various reasons such lack of professionalism by not warming up properly, rehearsing well, watching what they eat and drink, sleep enough, pace themselves during the gig, play with the key, arrangement or melody lines and quite important enough to get a good vocal coach supervising their vocal career. Afraid to say Sebastian Bach lacks this professional outlook on his voice and the discipline to maintain his vocals not just now but from way back when he was superman.

"18 and Life," next best song of theirs after this one. I was a long-haired 18 y.o. rocker when these tunes came out. They're almost like anthems for adulthood to me

I'm a Former Lead Singer, in several Rock Bands during the 80-90s, my Vocal Idol was Steve Perry from "Journey", until I heard THIS Phenomenon!!! He Changed my Style! I'm 62 Now and can Still hit SOME of Steve & Seb's MID Notes, NOT the High ones!
"Seb" has a New Album out, after going thru Rehab a few times. He Sounds Pretty Damn Good Now! Look him up on YT.

When you mentioned that they did a second pass on the chorus, that further speaks to your point of how good he had to be to able to deliver this back in the day. The runs, the belts, that you hear, they weren’t just the best or lucky takes that made it on to the final tracks. He was ridiculously consistent! He could hit them perfectly every time and it’s proven by every second pass he does on this song. That is the mark of a truly inspired singer, who is completely in command of his instrument.

Christi I adored your reaction, there is nothing better than seeing someone react in awe to Sebastian's voice for the first time. One of the most incredible rock voices EVER. I along with many others, would recommend Wasted Time next. The song was written about Sebastian's good friend Steven Adler (drummer for Guns N Roses) and his heroin addiction that cost him his spot in the band. Sebastian blew his voice out recording this song, and to me it's the most emotionally charged vocal performance in heavy metal history. It's a true masterpiece.

As many others have said, if you really want to hear his range, check out "Wasted Time." Perhaps the most emotional performance I've ever seen. For a harder song of theirs that is perhaps more representative of their music, but still shows off his vocals, I'd suggest "Livin on a Chain Gang." Sebastian is at number one on my list of favorite hard rock/heavy metal singers. I saw Skid Row on their first major tour, opening for Bon Jovi. I had no idea who they were before that night, but within 15 seconds of Sebastian unleashing his voice on the crowd, I knew I was going album shopping the next day. Of the 60-70 shows I've seen in my life, it's still top five. And their first two albums are also amongst my favorite all time. I'm just glad we can download our music to our computers now. I bought those first two albums three times each as I wore out my cassettes for both of them, and the first copy of each CD. Shortly after buying my third copies, I was able to rip those CDs to mp3 format and I no longer have to repurchase music.
