  • Scappa from Alessandro Cortini's album Forse 3 was made on the original Buchla Music Easel prototype. Here is an attempt to replicate it on the Make Noise Easel (0-CTRL, 0-COAST, Strega), plus some shimmer reverb.

    PATCH NOTES:
    0-CTRL top row CV out >> Strega 1v/oct (Tuning: G - A - B - D - A - B - D - D )
    0-CTRL middle row CV out >> 0-COAST 1v/oct (Tuning: D - D - D - D - C# - C# - C# - A)
    (A is the highest note, and on the max position on the 0-CTRL knob - If I remember correctly, I even had to pitch up the 0-COAST itself a bit to reach it. So tune the A first, and then D & C#) - You can check out the notes also here, I used this to figure out the melodies: onlinesequencer.net/3318350)
    0-CTRL touch cv out >> Strega Tones
    0-COAST clocked by tapping (the original is about 153 bpm). Clock out >> Contour Gate in >> Strega envelope trigger gate in
    0-COAST random voltage out >> Strega decay
    0-COAST saw wave out >> Strega external input in
    Strega envelope out >> activation
    Strega and 0-COAST go into an audio interface for the ipad. In AUM I added Eventide Shimmerverb and a DIY miRack/vcv rack patch for a more intense shimmer reverb (using Plateau and a pitch-shifting feedback loop) that I turn up towards the end, plus activating the hold function in Plateau for total reverb madness.

      Thank you - the marks are from another show I had to prepare last year which was quite complex to set up, so I marked the initial positions for the knobs to save some brain power (marks pointing straight up indicates the initial position - I stole that trick from some rig rundown video from a band I don‘t remember now)

    I would love to learn more about how you approached this cover. Covering a guitar based song with AB parts is hard enough. But an instrumental track like this which seems to evolve over time, with so much sound design involved, and you still totally nail the emotion of it. How long did it take you? What was difficult? How did you approach it overall? So curious.

    • @malwida1022
      @malwida1022  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I saw videos from Alessandro playing this live on the buchla easel, and understanding the limitations of the buchla, I thought it can‘t be that complicated. In these videos you can see him playing the 4 lower notes on the main touchplates and the 3 higher notes for the lead voice on the stored voltages touchplates. I don‘t have a good ear for pitch, so figuring out the notes was the hard part for me. Next problem was the limitations of the 0-ctrl, you have 3 stored voltages for each of the 8 stages, but of course you can only play 1 stage at a time, so doing 2 independent melodies required a workaround… I noticed he mostly plays certain notes over certain other notes, so instead of 4*3 = 12 combinations I simplified it to 8. So you can‘t replicate all the melodic counterpoint nuances from the original, but you‘re 90% there. Sound design was the easy part, as I didn‘t intend to fully replicate the original sound, but rather do the strega version. The original uses the Strymon Blue Sky, I used an Eventide Shimmerverb in the iPad and another over-the-top shimmer reverb patch I built in miRack/vcv rack some time ago. Then coming up with a strategy to keep building up the sound over time and practicing a bit after studying the original performance videos. I think this was my 3rd recorded take, still lots of mistakes, but that‘s ok, AC also leaves his in the recordings, after all it‘s played live and not sequenced… my favorite parts of the original are where he hangs out on one note to tweak the lead voice and adding more reverb, and then moving on with the lower melody while the lead note stays… In hindsight I should have done that more often… oh and I also should drink more water or calibrate my touchplates, they failed a couple of times to register the touch as you can see… so in total I‘d say I spent a full day on it, but spread out over 1 week or so… it’s a fun patch & melody to play. Thanks for listening!

      @@malwida1022 man that’s awesome and I SO appreciate the explanation. Very inspiring. It really helps to hear how much effort went into it. It takes so much work when I try and put something together and everything that goes up on TH-cam and Instagram make it all look easy, so I started to wonder if I was just really bad at all of it. But it is hard and time consuming for everyone I guess! I love how you approached this and the hybrid setup you use, which I do as well. And I agree with leaving the imperfections - well, when I hear them from someone else, lol. It’s hard to know which ones are okay for myself. It’s nice to find someone else who connects with AC’s music as much as I do! Thanks for sharing tour process! SO appreciate it!!!

      @@michaelkonomos yeah that‘s the unhealthy side of social media in a way… I thought about explaining parts of that in the video itself, but I‘m not a „TH-camr“ and it‘s too much work… so glad you asked and I could stick that in the comments 😉 - This is the first time I did a synth cover version, and it was more about solving the puzzles and to better understand AC’s approach in general. What really made my day as an AC fanboy was that Alessandro commented on it on Instagram and shared the reel on his account for a while.

    An interesting sonic piece (Cover). But for Scappa, slow the main melody down. You're touching the keypad too quickly sort of not knowing the slow dramatic of this intensely beautiful song. And you don't nail the ending. The original has a beautiful slow growing beat that hits intensity in that final act of the song that ends with an almost guitar feedback resonance. Good job though. I like that gear my friend.

    • @malwida1022
      @malwida1022  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Friends don't tell other friends that their tempo is off ;-) Looking at Alessandro's live performance video, I think the clock runs at about the same rate. I couldn't replicate the parts where he plays the shorter melody over each of the bass notes, because the 0-ctrl only has 8 stages and not 12, as I explained in another comment. I'm currently working on a non-sequenced version of "Everything ends here", where I already know tempo will be a challenge, because when you get excited, you're bound to hit the keys faster... oh, and I think there is also plenty of feedback to go around at the end ;-)
