I do not own a Jeep, planning installation in my Ford Superduty. I was looking for suitable radios (brands and configurations), and ideas on how to make the nicest and cleanest installation possible. Not only did you achieve this but you also had an amazing how to video and clearly explained along the way how you did it. Fantastic video sir, thank you for sharing.
Pascal, I have my sights on replacing my Grand Cherokee in not too distant future with a JL but was not seeing a lot of good ham radio install ideas until I stumbled on your approach which I really like. I too don’t want to be drilling lots of holes in a new Jeep. Great video production. Thanks. 73.
Great installation review. Looks very nice and while clearly custom, the fit and finish is near stock. The 5100 mounting is perfect, and I like the base of the unit in the glove box.
We were waiting for your Jeep JL ham radio install for over a year. You made some great choices for equipment. I was thinking you were going to go for the Yeasu FTM400 in the Jeep. Great install Pascal! Mike N6IMY
Uhoh! Where's the detailed video you promised? BTW, I love your videos -- I looked at them years ago when I was first getting licensed. It's nice to find you again!
Thanks for making this video! I was just scouting for options to mount my ID-5100A in my 2019 JLU, and I think you’ve come up with the only good way to do it. I hadn’t thought of putting the rig in the glove box, but I’m definitely going to do so now after seeing yours. My NMO antenna (Larsen 2/70) is likely going to go on the Mopar a-pillar bracket though, because I have an aftermarket tire carrier which wouldn’t work with that antenna mount plate. Anyway, I’m off to order the 67 mount bar. Thanks again! 73.
Great, great great, was a year I waiting for your installation! In my old JKU (they make the same thing for JLU) I put the body blackbox of radio (706mkiig/tmd700) under the seat in mount plate made for ampli or active subwoofer, it's perfect to fix and air flow 73 de IZ3QVB
Thanks for posting. I was wondering how I was going to run the power. That plug looks like it will be where I run the co-ax, too. No tire rack on a Gladiator.
Hi very nice job I found a mount from Cracken on Amazon it was 26 I bought both so I could have 2 antennas also. I'm gonna grt the bar you bought for the cb I love that. Thanks for sharing
Very nice installation! One point that isn’t clear in the narrative or the pictures - it looks like your fuses are underneath your dash. You didn’t say whether or not you placed fuses close to your battery. You need fuses there to protect the wiring from the battery into the passenger compartment. If you get a short or a wire chafe in any part of the with between the fuse holders and the battery to ground, it will turn into a red hot heating element and burn the vehicle to the frame. I’ve seen it.
nice job on the install, I have a question for you tho, how do you hear the radio in the glovebox? do you have external speaker or what? where did you mount that if so?
I'm curious about the antenna bracket if it's properly grounded and also what is the SWR reading because the bracket is nowhere connected to the Jeep chassis?
CAUTION: That CB bar comes close to your forehead as you sit in the seat. I have one in my JL and need to wrap some foam rubber around it for safety. If you are under 5'10" it may not be as significant. You can easily assess where the CB bar will be just by removing the top and evaluating where it will mount. Also, a lot of the after-market antenna accessories are not compatible with the JL if you have the factory heavy duty tire carrier.
True, I did bump my head the first time I came in the truck, I have to be careful when climbing in. When seated it's ok but I hope the seat belt will hold me down in case of an accident. Maybe it will be better to install a smaller radio. I'm 6'1" but I drive with the seat set to the max distance from the dash. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Very clean! I’m a fan of not seeing wires hanging all over the place as well. How has everything been holding up since the installation? Looks like it’s been about a year right?
What a well made video. You really found some funky stuff to get the job done, that cb bar and that tire rack!!! Also i had no idea that cable came with removable connectors. I have two questions. First, when you transmit in the icom at full power which i assume is 50W,do you get interference over the car radio wben it is both on and off. Also, i have a 67 design system, how did you get the head unit bracket to mount up Thanks, great job
Hi Anthony, thank you. First answer, no interference at all and I'm connected directly to the battery and I added an extra ground on the tire rack with OxGuard coumpound to have a good contact, all shown in the video. Second answer, I contacted 67 design for help in the beginning, and got a mount with to screws that fit perfectly the ICOM IC-5100 face plate holder, look form 4:25 in the video, but I can't find it on the manufacturer website, you will need to contact them to ask. Hope this helps. 73
Belle installation dans ton char ; mais le Lincoln bof, moi j'ai un Grant 120 canaux de 1991, il fonctionne superbement, NB parfait, je viens de le trouver neuf en boite :)
Great video, thank you! I was looking for the best place to install my ICOM 5100. Thanks to your video I am seriously considering the glove box. You said you didn’t want to do any drilling, can you show lots of details on how the base unit is mounted in the glove box?
Hi, after almost an year what can you say about your setup? will you want change something? upgrade or delete? antenna system still ok (no offroad for you right)? And ever think about goose mic for dual band radio with ptt on stick? Last but not least use radio driving (respecting the law naturally) or on park lot in spare time? 73 de IZ3QVB
Thanks. When not in use the mic is in the glove compartment. I can also put the cord on top of the radio, you can see it at some point in the video. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Hi there KI4WKK. I am actually installing an Icom ID-5100 in my Jeep JL. Then saw your video. Great work. Looking forward to getting back on the air. Did you hook your ground to the bracket or to the antenna?
Thanks. Running a 10 gauge ground wire after seeing your video. I might do a setup video myself especially since there isn’t much in the way of ham videos and the Jeep JL.
Hi Vini, look in the video comments for all the links. Here's the CB bar with the 67design dash mount. 73www.wayalife.com/store/proddetail.php?prod=PARTS-CB-BAR www.67d.com/collections/jl-bases-and-options?page=2

Getting a ham radio together for a Jeep is turning into a nightmare for me. I have a reinforced Mopar tailgate system on my JL that has a 1/2" hole in it, but it's too thick and not big enough for 5/8" UHF so I need to find some kind of adapter that I can mount to the hole in the tailgate and cannot find one anywhere. Also, have a Comet 4 meter cable, but I'm afraid it's not going to be long enough, should I get the 5 meter, or will the 4 meter work? If I'd have known it was going to be this aggravating getting this together, I probably would have bought a handheld. www.extremeterrain.com/mopar-tailgate-reinforcement-kit-2018-jl.html
Hi Doug, it took me months to figure out my ham radio set up into the Jeep and since it was the new JL model I had to wait for the availability of after market solutions. I think my Rock Hard tire support extended could work for you even if you have the reinforced tail gate system. You should check it out. What surprising is that my Jeep installation was the most expensive setup I ever had in a car. A solution for you would be an antenna that is using the 3/8 system, just like CB, then the 1/2 hold will work, see what I used for the 10 meter antenna, the challenge is to find a VHF/UHF antenna that support this mount. I think only MJF have an available model. 73 Pascal VA2PV

I don't think that that bracket will work with the soft top. It is using holes that are for the soft top brackets.
