  • Newtown Creek is a Superfund site that runs through Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Long Island City in Queens. The Environmental Protection Agency designated Newtown Creek a Superfund site in 2010, but it won't start cleaning up the toxic waste until 2032. Footage here from 2009 and views of old maps are narrated by New York City maritime photographer Bernard Ente (d. 2011). Before regulations, factories could dump their byproducts into the water and this started in the 1860s. Today, 15 feet of sludge lines the creek's bottom.
