I am 73 years old and between the ages of 9 and 18 I lived in LIC/Astoria and we had gangs and the biggest gang fights were with the gangs out of Greenpoint.

I came to Greenpoint from Poland in 1995,than I moved to San Francisco for next 25 years. I am back in Greenpoint for the past couple of years. It is actually hard to believe how much Greenpoint and Williamsburg have changed in past 20 years.
Chris is right.... most of Polish who now stay here, own a house or have rent stabilization/control.

I love your videos and how you include a "local" New Yorker to offer interesting stories.....There are many people who may never make it to New York--these videos offer a wonderful experience. Please keep making these wonderful videos.

Walking back to Queens from Greenpoint over the Pulaski Bridge gives you an interesting, old school look at the city, so industrial and right by the water.

When hurricane Sandy flooded the G, we took that walk from Greenpoint to Queens and back in order to get to work. Hordes of us...unless you tried to jam your body in an already packed bus...

I love Greenpoint. Not sure if it is the trendiest though. It has some trendy places, but also old school places, it is more mixed, which is why I like it.
I would say Bushwick is more hipster and trendy. The current hip area is Dimes Square, on the edge of Chinatown and the LES.

Looks amazing! I wish I could bring those perogies back for my dad. His grandmother was Polish and according to him perogies were such a huge staple of meals and a large pride of hers. I've said it before but I really love seeing so much diversity in one city and that alone has made visiting so worth it. Tragically it's just not something we have enough of in small rural towns. Can't wait to be back in NYC in September! It'll be a short trip but I'm still stoked to see the city again!

Definitely change especially since 90s. Have many memories here… It did always have night life like unfortunately closed night dance club Exit. It also used to have exotic animal restaurant (don’t remember name) where you can find alligator on menu. Also some warehouses even in 2000s - remember visiting one where they had furniture and props rented for movies… Also used to be some small studios - had my old VHS tapes converted to digital…

I would love to see a video or even a series on those who lost their homes and/.or businesses through eminent domain. Marriages falling apart, suicides, families fighting families and elected officials working WITH mob families under the codes names of redevelopment and exactly what almost was touched on when he said he sees good and bad things associated with gentrification and affordable housing meaning nothing at all. What you want is the development of low income housing and not affordable housing which would sell you a studio condo for $500,000 or rent you a studio apt for $4,000 a month. The public needs to be made aware that affordable housing is just placed in the plans to shut up those protesting their presence of redevelopment. There must be some areas in Brooklyn that are working with or have worked with the Institute for Justice out of Washington, DC, the Libertarian law group that are fighting the elected officials with very deep pockets.

Greenpoint/Williamsburg has been ruined by the hipsters. The locals can no longer live in their neighborhood where they were born and raised. These areas were working middle class neighborhoods and now it's unaffordable. Stop changing neighborhoods.

    • @thru_and_thru
      @thru_and_thru 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If you mean the hipsters ruined it by making it trendy then you are spot on. In actual fact very few of the shaggy hipsters who played in bands and had art studios still live in this neighborhood. Now it’s a new generation of young people who either have massive salary jobs or who’s parents are funding them. I guess some of these can definitely still be referred to as hipsters but I always think of the typical Brooklyn hipster from back around 2009 to be somebody who shared a loft with 9 roommates and paid $400 per month rent. It’s a broad term however and can describe a lot of different groups of people.

Define trendiest. It's not as a vibrant neighborhood as it used to be. A lot of businesses have closed and were never replaced with other storefronts. I don't believe that Covid played a role in it. It became a dull, bland, and over-gentrified neighborhood. The g train is still unreliable, and it is still hard to travel from there to the city. There are way better neighborhoods to live in where you will probably don't have to spend 4 thousand for a 1 bedroom railroad layout apartment.

    • @KCatalano88

I've been in Greenpoint at Java & Manhattan for more than 14 years and yeah unfortunately I agree with that. It's not the same weird, mostly Polish quiet and cool neighborhood that I moved to. Same thing is happening in West Harlem. Gentrification, crime was so high before now it’s becoming like another green point. The geography has changed too.

I like Greenpoint Cape Town which [unfortunately] has also become very trendy.

Wait, there's a Greenpoint in Cape Town?

People will know your name if you go to the same places each day! CUP or Norman, everyone knew my first name and I knew theirs. Everyone will know your name if you haunt the same places & everything big is small if you work it right. There's a certain landlord in Greenpoint that charges dirt cheap for rent, provided you aren't a condo dweller or bougie-fancy. It isn't even near the (former EPA site Newtown Creek!)

Cool neighborhood I haven't heard of it, I love the mural, don't get my doughnut order wrong, I love the PB&J doughnuts at Doughnut Plant one time I got six to go to take home on the bus to Maryland, next morning oh boy I get to eat my favorite doughnut, none of the six were PB&J I forget what they were I didn't like them, I haven't had Pierogis cute baby, whoa baseball bats cool, felling cool I know what you mean we were walking on street I forget the name of the street near Grand in the LES, a ton of 20 somethings all in the street in huge lines to get into clubs, I didn't like it I said let's get out of here, I wasn't scared just felt uncool, that's crazy a polluted nature walk

As someone who grew up in Greenpoint before it became 'trendy', I have to say that the new Greenpoint, as I visit it now, is lacking in character. Now it is filled with chain stores, whereas in the past, it was more of a mom and pop type community. Also, how many coffee shops, tattoo parlors, bars, and pot shops is enough. 🙄

This video makes it seem that the Polish community in Greenpoint is a thing of the past when, while much smaller, it is still very alive and vibrant today. I appreciate highlighting Pierozek but there are MANY Polish Greenpoint institutions that were overlooked. This video would have greatly benefited from a Polish guide, if nothing more than to at least get pronunciations correct

    • @HereBeBarr

That could be its own video. And maybe it will 🤔 but I don’t think i needed a polish guide for the whole area

@@HereBeBarr Maybe could be a consideration for a future video! I respectfully disagree, a Polish guide who can speak to both Polish and non-Polish aspects of the neighborhood would have been the ideal candidate without erasing parts of its rich cultural heritage. Looking forward to seeing more videos!
