  • The High Bridge, New York City's oldest standing bridge, spans the Harlem River at 173rd Street in Manhattan. It officially closed sometime during the early 1970s -- the NYC Parks Department, mysteriously, isn't certain of the exact date. High Bridge remained open for ranger tours until the late 1990s, when the gates were shut to all but Parks employees after engineers discovered structural flaws.

Thank you for taking me down memory lane. As a kid, I use to play in this area. I remember the old bridge. Beautiful

Thank you for taking me down memory lane. Also As a kid, I use to play in this area. I remember the old bridge being closed in the early 1960, we lived on both sides of the bridge, i was born on the Manhattan side and went to the pool when i was very young, then we moved to the Bronx side and i love to Explorer when i was young i would go down by the bridge

And finally, tomorrow, June 9 2015, the bridge will be re-opened for the public! I hope to see footage of what will no doubt be a very happy occasion all around.

I always remember ass kid asking what the tower & bridge were for. My grandmother was in the Bronx. We’d stop on our way to other relatives for Christmas.

Never on schedule. Reopened in 2015, not 2013. They've got plenty of time and money to needlessly rename roads and bridges though.

The city only broke ground on the project Jan. 11, 2013, expecting to be completed sometime in 2014.
