Blue Ruin has been my sleeper rec for so long. The Gift, The Guest, Shot Caller are all also very solid. I rarely rewatch movies, but I'd rewatch those 4. Darren, you've helped both my ADD and OCD with your videos, without you i'd be perpetually stuck having never seen a full movie, just menu browsing. Just an aside..The Berlin Syndrome is a real phenomenon. It refers to the psychological phenomenon where a captive/ kidnapped person over a period of time begins to side and feels a belonging and love, of sorts for their captor(s). In the 70s the heiress Patty Hearst ( I'm so dating myself) was kidnapped by the S.L.O. and over time began to identify and believe in their cause and resisted release to her family. Anyway, it's a very good film. Thanks, Darren for your continued hardwork to provide these lists. :)

The syndrome you refer to is Stockholm Syndrome. Although Berlin syndrome is an actual syndrome it is a completely different thing. Even though this movie actually deals with Stockholm syndrome they use the title as a twist on the name due to its location.

I always recommend Blue Ruin to people, so I'm guessing I can trust your other recommendations on the list as well! It might be little downbeat for some, but it's an incredible subversion of so many thriller and revenge movie cliches. Everything that happens has a startling and grim believability to it, which made it all the more more gripping and suspenseful. It also has a mature perspective on the nature of violence and revenge, deglamorizing both. As you said, for a low budget film it's also beautifully shot (I believe the director was formerly a cinematographer).

      I liked The Invitation too.
There's another really good movie that is also called The Gift with Kate Blanchett,Giovanni Ribisi,Hillary Swank, and Keanu Reeves.
It's not available on U.S. Netflix at the moment, but I'm not sure if other streaming services have it.

Into the Wild is by far one of the better novel films made. One of my personal favorites.
Good list, more movies to watch, thanks.

  • @jerichobeach2967
    @jerichobeach2967 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Out of these 20 I’ve only heard of & seen 2.
Those are shot caller I give a 7/10.
Interest builds on the main character as his character develops you empathize with him as time goes by, especially if you’ve been incarcerated or had some form of struggle or injustice of major life changing importance you’ll get behind the shot caller. Worth a watch.
The only other one I seen from the list was The Gift and I give it 10/10. The twist, the tension, the slow reveal of key points have the audience second guessing everything, even the twist does so. I haven’t seen it on Netflix Canada in years. I’m going to see if they brought it back because I’ll watch it right this second if it is.
There was one movie I think number 2 on his list that is called the guest, that seems worth a watch and seems to have some similarities to the gift.
If either the guest or the gift is on Netflix in my country imma watch one of them right now.
Thanks guy who made this review.
The way you explained the gift without giving away too much has enabled me to realize you know a good dark movie when you see one.
    ✌️all

(As I love time travel stories), I saw the entertaining, underrated "Safety Not Guaranteed" in the cinema when it came out; a year or three I attended a "New Girl" Q&A, afterward telling Jake that I enjoyed the film.
"Oh, so *you're* one of the three..." he snarked.

My mum had just passed away from Cancer when a Monster Calls came out.
    Great film.
Shot Caller had amazing potential but felt the ending let it down. Still worth a watch tho.
Calm with Horses is very good. And remember seeing Sex Drive at the Cinema when it came out. Theres a few mid 2000s low key comedy gems out there.

The darkest movie on the list, A Monster Calls, based on an award winning children’s book. It’s not a dark movie. If you walked away from it thinking it was dark you completely missed what it was about. I loved it, as well as the book.

Man, you have a unique view of what a good movie is. Singular almost. I started three of these and made it through one and cant tell you how much I regret it. You have a dark, ugly streak to the movies you like that I find really difficult to appreciate. I wish you had warned me how terribly sad "Into the Wild" was. I am not happy about that experience.
