    I like your carbon hinges. Despite the work to do them, it will look better, I think. Also, thanks go to the fantastic editor for the piano jazz while relaxing with the fiberglassing. Love your entire channel.

    Of course we all love to see the bespoke hinges. But if you decide to keep the stainless piano hinges, I believe you should consider reversing them so the barrels rest in a small chamfer or ogee. It keeps them below the surface so you won’t have a toe catch point with the barrels being higher than the surface.

      If the "barrel" of the hinge is below the surface of the deck, then the lid can't open fully. Barrel up allows the lid to open fully flat against the deck.

    Carbon hinges for sure! My concern about the SS hinges is that they could be a foot hazard for barefoot sailors. with the carbon hinges you could bevel/fair the edges into the deck. Then no cut feet! That's my 50 cents.

    You should make up a whole bunch more carbon hinges - more than you need now - so you have extras to use throughout the project without having to retool and repeat

    I’ve seen on some boats they use a plug at the entrance to the anchor chain opening to prevent the “fire hose” of sea water entering down below.

    I was thinking the carbon hinges since I first saw the trough idea.
    You know what you have to do! Continue to pour yourself throughout every inch of this boat. That is the Only way you will have 100% perfect confidence in her. Every inch of her. Your hinges are Soooooo much better than those ss ones.
    Much.
    Better.

    Try kevlar hinges. Just raw cloth as the hinge. Try an experimental one on a door to see if it will last. (Bet it will)

    Nice work and consideration to viewers who appreciate seeing a near finished project in one video. Also a real big thank you, I'm still learning from some of your projects--even though I finished my apprenticeship 15 years ago. Not to pick at all, but the 6 0unce fiberglass tape at the hatches edges to seal the core. This area on my hatch work always a concern at a leak spot, not too crucial in the project your doing. I usually follow grind the this top corner and do a second layup to allow for dings and rough service damage. While you were demonstrating another possible solution to be faster, It to putty fill milled fiberglass after taping. 1. 1/8" rabbit around the top of the hatch side edge just beneath the top skin, fill with milled fiber and resin. 2. Use an air roller to "roll out" the milled fiber putty instead of knife; works far quicker and leaves a finished surface similar to cloth layup, so minimal sanding. 3. Green cure work the edge. sand or just rasp with SUFORM 1/2 round file off the surface. 4. Fill any low voids. 5. Sand 80 or if possible180 to final paint prep. Hope that was clear and maybe helps on corner edges in rough service areas.

      ditto to fill in for recessed hinges, router, and make compression post, milled fiber fill, make and insert to press in, wood and re-router it out, or overfill and router a second time, or silicon mold a insert and remove after cure. FWIWI like the look of butterfly hinges for foot traffic areas

    You REALLY need to get a pneumatic or electric caulking gun. I've done a lot of caulking and adhesive applications during my 20+ years of boat building, and I can tell you some type of powered caulking gun is amazing. If you have some type of Amazon wish list, I would be happy to get one for you.

    Consider flipping the hinges so that the hinge rod becomes recessed and flush with the deck regardless of the material you ultimately choose. That would both protect the hinges from drag damage and reduce their ability to snag sails or hurt crew.

    This will be a life long project. Some things need to be the minimum viable solution to get to the goal of having a functioning boat. Skip the hinges, take some pressure off yourself. Focus on big ticket items, details can follow as hobby projects while living aboard 😊😊 IMO

    Screw the hinges to the side of the Deck cuts and the lids (with the contact ob the upper side so they still open). That way, they stay in the Deck and are not visible nor you can scratch your feet. I would also add some kind of rubber seal to the opening sides of the lids so they are more water resistent at the top of the slids, and they are fitting tight and dont move that fast... and I would avoid metal, which would rust away

  • @captainsensible298
    @captainsensible298 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah for carbon hinges, how about rubber flaps on the front of the chain channel that will roughly seal the windlass shelf from getting hosed with salt water. Used to sail on a Hobie 21 mono whose hollow carbon bow sprit used to do just that to the forward compartment. Learned to bring water tight gear bags when sailing that boat.

    I would seriously consider hidden hinges of whatever material. You'll regret not doing that the first time you carve a groove in your foot with an exposed hinge.
    I would also consider large drains into and out of the windlass and chain lockers - ideally not into the bilge. After a dozen muddy anchorages, that chain channel is going to fill with mud, even if you're deligent in hosing off the chain at the bow. You're going to want to hose that mud out and it's going to end up in the chain locker via the windlass locker. Keep it all smooth and free flowing so it's easier to keep clean.

    The windlass set up is looking really great! Getting the chain pile further aft will help balance the boat as I'm sure you know. Your custom carbon hinges would be well worth doing for that application.

    Matt, please, for the sake of your knees, wear kneepads! Or sit on cushions. Or if you can help it, just sit on your bottom, or on a short stool. Even for short periods. Lot of short periods add up to long times on your knees on unforgiving hard foam+fibreglass and you'll wear your knees out before you even have a chance to get Duracell into the water. Don't ask me how I know :)

    Regardless which material you end up using for the hinge, you need to both use the hinge "properly" the way it is designed, by mounting the wings along the edge of the door and the edge of the deck so that the only exposed part of the hinge is the knuckle. Just as you see them installed on actual pianos.
    And have the hinge cover the entire length of the opening.
    Other than that, what a cool concept for a tidy deck up front! (foredeck?) I'm not down with marine lingo 😊

  • @GregPenoyre
    @GregPenoyre 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think you should fix the hinges within the slot (door style) then you won’t have to see them. The slot could have one long stainless steel piano hinge which would help strengthen the cover as well. I also wonder if at times the locker will fill completely before it drains. Can an electric windlass take that much water? Great video, great progress!

    +1 for carbon hinges... and maybe put them vertically in the gap between the deck and lid so that you only see the hinge bit (if that makes sense), although that stick up a bit. Anyway, that could always be done later I guess.

    A solution for the seawater running down that water funnel you made, it seems to me only one thing that will work well. Cut a rectangular hole (or two) in the bottom of the trough and build a funnel and hose underneath and combine that with whatever drain you're planning for the windlass pan. Hopefully that will intercept most of the water and the chain should glide over it and not droop down the hole. You can also flip that long cover open to wash the chain as it comes in. Otherwise you'll be washing the chain gunk right into the pan. Hi Mom!

    Hi guys, nice box Matt, good and strong. I know the piano hinge is the quick and easy option but you already know you will be looking down at them every time you go forred wishing you had put the carbon bespoke in. Besides for others the stainless would be better for ease of replacement if the situation presents itself, but you could probably make an extra set while you make the ones for the chain door and keep them in your spares pack ready to go. You did ask! Oh and you think mom might want o e of your spare hats? I thought I saw a drip of resin nearly land in her hair! God bless

    I like the chain channel but it is not something you will open up daily. For that reason, I would not use hinges at all but go for flathead screws. How often do you think you will need to open that channel? You could use a piece of fitted rubber to the anchor chain where it rests against the opening of the channel to stop the inflow of water. It could be of a uniform shape that could not be misaligned with the channel opening. The most economical thing to line the channel with would be regular PVC pipe that would allow enough room for the chain to pass through. This would make the rubber stopper easy to build and fit since there would be no wrong way for it to fit into the pipe. You are doing a great job and do excellent work!
