  • Commissioned by an acquaintance of mine, this is the very recent, heartening story of a student representing the unshakable spirit of earthquake and tsunami-stricken northeast Japan as he flies a pedal-powered airplane over Lake Biwa.
I expect many people have uploaded the pilot's famous collection of utterances, but for the people who didn't see the program (i.e. people outside of Japan), merely seeing the cramped cockpit and his increasingly desperate shouts may be disturbing, confusing at best. Thus I argued that the only way to understand just how amazing this strong-willed pilot is, one must see the original footage.

This is so much better than the Australian Birdman rally in 2020... Lol. World's apart in effort/technology.

    夜ふかしで流れてたけどセリフでみんな笑ってたけど、流石にそれはないと思う。
    にしてもこのフライのお陰で何人の被災者が勇気を貰った人がいたんだろう。私も勇気をもらいました

that was 10 years ago technology, if the same guy did it today in 2021, he would have walked it, the craft would have been much lighter and he would have been able to not need to put in so much power. A very brave effort from a very strong willed and spirited youth well done on such a great effort.

That means you saw the true struggle and victory beneath the spastic theatrics. Good on you.

Looks like the signs of "bonking", meaning he expended all of his carbohydrate reserves and was feeling his body shut down. Great effort, but the physical and emotional stresses of running out of energy just can't be overcome.

He flew way further than 18 km in flight distance. Too bad he couldn't keep more left rudder to avoid drifting right all the time.

Why doesn't he have a normal compass, like an airplane?
Just head for 300° and u are flying straight all the way!

Great question! Maybe to reduce weight? Although they could have saved at least that much if they left behind the pilot's penchant for theatrics. OOOH HO HO

Indeed, a professional cyclist could probably do a good job... assuming his or her weight wasn't too much for the craft.
