Two of the greatest fighters of all time. One of the greatest fights of all time. This is boxing at the highest level. No mindless slugging, no running, no one dimensional fighters. Two all time great complete fighters going to war.
This is the pinnacle of boxing, no clowns, no trash talk, pure skill at the highest level by 2 G.O.A.Ts (almost) in their prime, McCallum being on the older side but still as evident, with all his experience and knowledge intact.
This was actually Toney's 4th fight of the year and this was McCallum's 5th! Fighters back then stayed busy! What made this event more special, was the commentary by arguably the greatest middleweight of all-time, Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
Mike “ The Bodysnatcher “ McCallum is a criminally underrated boxer\puncher.
Nice jab on him
I mean he's in the hall of fame so don't know that he's "underrated".
No one is saying he's bad but toney is criminally underrated for beating this guy twice.
@@Re-Bourne And I need to go back and watch those two bouts, I'm sure they're barn burners.
@@houseman7315more like high level chess matches
If you want to introduce boxing to a newcomer to the sport, show him thid fight.
A well-balanced combination of intelligence, skills, experience, and speed.
Conditioned chin for mccallen and raw power for Toney!
RIP referee Steve Smoger! One of the few refs that actually stayed out the way and let the fighters fight!
Not like Tony weeks
exactly
wasn’t watching fights back when he was active but from all the old fight footage i’ve watched, smoger is one of my favourites
You can see after watching the opening 60 seconds that this is going to be a high-quality fight.
James Toney was incredible on his undefeated run from 1988 to 1994. He beat fantastic fighters like Michael Nunn, Mike MacCullum and Iran Barkley. James was looked at by many by 1993 as the pfp #1 best fighter in the world.
Questo ragazzo un po malinconico, serio, poco incline alle luci della ribalta, è stato davvero un grandissimo pugile, spesso ignorato. Fosse stato più protetto e meglio guidato, sarebbe sarebbe celebrato quanto i più grandi.
He's got skills in all areas of the sport. He was dogged by the establishment and never got the respect that he deserved. I rank him in the top 20 all-time.
He was the king of headbutts
@vishnu Who?
@@vishnu2407what?!?!
James toney has rarely ever committed a foul or been warned by the ref in his entire 92 fight career. He's never headbutted anyone ever. You'd have a hard time finding an accidental headbutt in any of his fights.
Crazy you just completely made that up.
Thanks to Top Rank for uploading so many classic fights for us to watch.
Wow maccallum giving up all that age and still a nip and tuck fight. It really shows how special maccalum was.
This is the highest of the high in terms of technical skill. People talk about chess match in boxing. This is the epitome. Both guys had some of the highest IQs in boxing
Toney uses a sideways stance when attacking and an open stance when stalking to cut ring off. Simple yet powerfully effective. Bruce Lee advocated keeping it simple and brutal. Toney switched it up southpaw on inside, beautiful stuff. MM is a warrior tho. Brutal fight, when technique slips due to fatigue it’s the heart that starts to factor in. Both guys are the real deal to the maximum. Although it seemed close if u watch carefully u can see Toney is clearly better. Way more power from ground up, more dynamic movements better IQ. Mccallum able to hang cuz of his very good grip on fundamentals, conditioning and heart/toughness bs decision tho
Yeah I thought Toney should've won this
What a bout! Superb boxing. Thank you for posting!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Damn Toney at only 23 is so much better than any current day fighter like Shakur, Teo, Tank, Haney the 25.26 yr old wanna bee's .
He fought 5 or 6 times a year as the champion. He ducked nobody, had more skills than just about anyone that I can think of. He's very high on my all-time best list.
He was better than Canelo as well.
I know it’s not even close. Holding is not a skill. Running is not a skill. Toney was insanely good. So was maccallum.
I must agree a trillion times to infinity.
One of the most beautiful boxing matches you will ever see, and the first of a series of scintillating fights between the two. Enjoy!
That era of Middleweights was the greatest set of Middleweights ever assembled at once. from 1988 to 1993 alone we got:

McCallum vs Graham
James Toney is my favorite fighter ever and this fight, between the two of them, was probably one of the most SKILLED fights I've ever seen. Just a fantastic display of the sport.
Toney is my 2nd favorite fighter, I like Pacquiao above all others. James was very underrated, never got the respect he deserved.
@@MrMarco855That's probably his fault. The older Toney got, the bigger his appetite got and the lazier he got. So he ended up losing to some guys he had no business losing to at points. The man was an absolute genius though.
@@LucieOne That's an often-repeated exaggeration. He played quarterback in high school at 200 lbs. Years later he was fighting professionally at 160. He made one hell of a sacrifice to shed 40 lbs as he got older. He had 31 fights at 160, 13 more at 168, that's 44 fights only increasing one division. It took a lot of work to maintain himself that long, especially since he was at 200 as a 17 year old quarterback.
As champion he fought 4 or 5 times a year, a very heavy schedule that required almost constant training. He was still fighting at 175 after 53 fights, still 25 lbs. below his high school weight. His weight began to increase as he aged but he continued to fight well despite that. At one point he was 69-4 and was routinely criticized in the way that you've mentioned. He fought as a pro for 29 years until almost 50, hard to be critical of a man with his accomplishments. 77-10 as a pro, as good a record as almost anyone and more longevity than everyone except Hopkins. He was disrespected routinely, not only for his weight but early on because he was rough around the edges and wouldn't kiss anyone's ass.
@@MrMarco855Fair enough and I appreciate your defending him but, as I said, he's my favorite fighter ever, so I appreciate his warts as well. They actually enhance his legacy all these years later. How can a former middleweight end up, with his belly jiggling, standing directly in front of arguably the hardest punching heavyweight at the time, losing a split decision that he should have won. Previously did the same thing to the best cruiserweight at the time and wore down and nearly stopped a guy who specialized in wearing people down. He was JAMES TONEY. It didn't matter how hard you hit because it wasn't like there was a chance in hell that you could catch him with a clean punch anyway. He was not above critique -- no one is, we're all hilariously flawed -- and if he somehow were I would not love him so much. So I agree that he's been criticized in an exaggerated way, but to the extent that it was true, I couldn't care less. The same way I don't care that Julian Jackson didn't have the greatest chin, or Michael Carbajal had a leaky defense, or Terry Norris' chin wasn't the greatest either and he had a few loose screws, or Jean Pascal seemingly made it his mission to break every single rule in "the book". I loved all of them, but no one like James Toney.
@@LucieOne Nice response, we definitely agree on appreciating the man for the athlete he is/was. I think you're referring to Samuel Peter aren't you? Toney definitely won their first fight. The problem was, Peter vs Klitschko was already a done deal, they expected a bigger return than a Toney/Klitschko fight. That has to be the case, because Toney beat his ass and Peter couldn't lay a glove on him. It's nice to know that someone sees in Toney what I see, one hell of a fighter. God Bless you.
This is an example of how fighters can be technical and still exciting
A young James Toney was perhaps the most beautifully- styled fighter I've ever seen.
Yeah, he's fantastic to watch. It's a shame he ate himself out of 160, would have been considered one of the best ever at the weight.
If you look at what he did at 160, he has an argument for one of the best.
Mike McCallum was a vet in the game by the time he versed toney
From 1988 to 1994 was the greatest set of Middleweights assembled at once: Toney, Benn, Jackson, Nunn, McClellan, Watson, Jones Jr, Eubank, Hopkins and McCallum.
I wont disagree, but the greatest I ever saw in my lifetime was Marvin Hagler. Easily.....
@@milojanis4901He got schooled by a welterwwight way past his prime and coming out of retirement. Hagler was average.
@@SBroconis522 Hagler was robbed by the judges
@@SBroconis522 schooled is delusional, u watch boxing on tiktok huh casual, lol, like Leonard didn't literally go to 168
@Bankai_Musashi1 Leonard started at lightwelterweight. Hagler campaigned at 165 in the amateurs… it’s actually very strange that he never grew into a light heavyweight. Hagler displayed very poor aggression against a man that was like 10 pounds smaller than him and was almost done at the elite level. I actually think Antonio Margarito would have finished that Leonard (2005 Margarito that destroyed undefeated Cintron). I agree that it was not a schooling by a washed Sugar. I only said that so people would reply my comment.
Lol Trump cheesing in the background of round 3
McCallum's jab is wicked
One of my favorite fights to watch and study. Sharp, clean punching, slick defense in the pocket, true grit and physicality 🥊
Mike mccullum beat toney and toney knows that most understated boxer mccullum an absolute pleasure watching you
Good fight but toney beat McCallam
Thank you Top Rank. Your place in boxing history is well deserved.
A great example of sweet science. No running. Just nice exchanges and flow to each fighter. Was never a big fan of toneys personality, but dude had an incredible IQ for such a young age
These two are awesome
I love Mike McCallum style. It translates to any body type or athletic ability. He was also a great puncher and great thinker.
I have McCallum winning, but every round is close (except for the 12th, which Toney won big). McCallum's peak is 1984-86, but here he is, crafty and cagey as ever, if slower and weaker.
Quality boxing.
One hell of a fight one of the best
My favourite fight highest level boxing skills from both
Two of the best technicians in the modern game. I loved how McCallum could counter a right hand so aggressively. Takes some skill and alot of guts. Toney was what, 23? Fighting like that against such an experienced guy like McCallum. Brilliant, well conditioned, extremely tough, the both of them
You don't see this kind of technique being displayed anymore man these was good times in boxing i miss this era
Battle of the elites. Wish we saw what a young Michael “the body snatcher” McCallum looked like when he was young.
thank you top rank
Welcome 👍
Young James about as good as anybody. And Mike was truly underrated
Oh to be young 😢 This fight was over before it ever got started
This could be the best technical fight ever. Great, great fight👏👏👏👏👏❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Most technical fight of all time
Hella fight between these champs 💪💪
Watching this in 2024, thought i had the video sped up or something 😅
Auténtico peleón, ojalá volviese ese boxeo
Un época realmente inolvidable
This fight your truely seeing the sweet science of boxing as the leavel is so high with these two great fighter's.
Round 7 is amazing.
Hearing Hagler commentate… priceless 🙂
Funny seeing Trump in the audience back when he was just a businessman.
OH the sweet science!!!!!!!!
The play speed in watching this fight is to fast
It feels like it. But I’m not sure. If you time the round clock, it seems okay.
Cryin' Mike McCallum. Like watching paint dry. Why Marvelous won't fight me? Why Ray won't fight me? Why Tommy won't fight me? Why Roberto won't fight me? Why Mugabi got to fight Marvelous? Why not me?! Wah, wah wah.😢😢😢😢😢
But he's telling the truth
Even watching the fight again all these years late, I think Toney won the fight pretty convincingly. He lumped up McCallum and wobbled him a few times.
Fantastic fight! The announcer shouldn'tt be yelling, "Oh" when shots are missing.
In my opinion they messed over James Toney with that decision he should've won this fight
Hagler is commentating, yet he didn't mention McCullum fight never happened because of combat politics...heard it was more lucrative to fight Hearns than McCullum at the time, also it was a difficult style to fight... similar to no one wanted to fight winky wright...anyway I could be wrong... nonetheless, McCullum was know as a great body puncher; it was great viewing a young toney....
Greatest fight of all time
You just watch Toney and say that is boxing skills 👏 creme de la creme
Biased commentary again 👎🏽
Turn off the sound and judge for yourself 👍🏽
Toney edged it. McCallum ran out of gas and Toney too slick, and was on top for most of the time.
Just proves how good Roy Jones was 😳
McCallum a pesar de su edad de 37 años hizo una buena pelea aunque al final lo salvó la campana. Yo creo que si hubiera estado mas joven hubiera ganado
Toney 12 years younger than his opponent?
Draw? You gotta be kidding me, Toney won this ofcourse. And he won it very obviously. That was a terrible decision.
Где сейчас такие бои?
Smart fighters.
President Trump watching this fight.
Draw? Toney was robbed again.
Robbery .. Tony won Easy
Toney 8-4 or 9-3.
Toney a great boxer 🌟🇺🇸🥊💯🌟👈🤔
Trump in crowd, third row on right. Not many fighters would want these two plus this special announcer. Lol
Did you see Trump in the third row
Trump chillin' in the audience.
10:44 Trump is watching
These 2 would of beat the shit out of our boys Benn & eubank
Like Tyson, hollyfied.
Trump @ ringside

lol @ Trump in the third row with a blonde piece on his right who is clearly not his wife and hanging out with some goodfellas on his left.
