  • How to replace the drive bearings on a front wheel drive Toro Recycler mower.
The front wheels on this FWD Toro Recycler pop, clunk, and jam when rolling. It drives fine, but this is an early sign of bearing failure. When the bearings wear out the gears are allowed to come out of mesh, accelerating wear and stripping out the front wheel gears. Replacing the front wheels is only a temporary measure, as they will strip out again due to improper gear mesh caused by the worn bearings. These bearings are a common failure point but are cheap to replace.
Applies to most Front wheel drive Toro Recycler mowers including personal pace models.
    Parts:
    Bearings (x2): Toro 104-8699 amzn.to/2la7k0h
Bearing wont come out easily? The bearing and retainer are available together:
    Toro 104-8698 & 104-8699 amzn.to/2lIsmDx
    Wheels: Toro 105-1815 amzn.to/2lJVM4d

Thanks for the vid! At 7:08, if you don't have a large enough socket, I think you could place the old bearing on top of the new one to pound in the new one.

Nice video. I have the personal pace mower, and my drive bearing looks much harder to replace. The retainer bushing is screwed through the body, and it has to be removed inward. I may have to take out the transmission and slide the axle through to free it.
These bearings are basically designed to fail. They are exposed to so much dirt and dust and have a tiny little gasket protecting them.

Thanks for the great video! I picked up an older Toro which had the same problem. The wheels would jam up when rolling the mower without the engine running. 2 new wheels, 2 new bearings, a little bit of grease, and the mower rolls good as new!

Excellent video. Other similar videos show a newer mower with some notable differences, e.g snap rings rather then clips retaining the drive gear. I have the identical mower with the same problem, but the bearing inner race is frozen to the shaft - any suggestions?

Toro sells it for much less. I think under $8.

I haven't seen anywhere that offers the complete adjuster as a new part. I bought OEM bearings, $7 for the pair. It's a one beer job.
