Most people know about Petty Enterprises and Level Cross NC...but did you know the entire lifespan of Petty Enterprises took place on the same piece of land Richard and Maurice were born and raised on? Lee Petty started racing in the 1940s and used a small A frame wooden structure with a dirt floor they had built to be a reaper shed (hay bail making equipment). Dale Inman was there since day one starting as a little kid eventually becoming Richards crew chief for all 7 title seasons. Dale shows us around and shares some firsthand history! The original Petty Enterprises engine room is STILL being used to build engines today! They use the former race shop facility now for "Petty's Garage" custom builds, parts, and restorations!

and he is the greatest crew chief in the history of the sport when it comes to raw stats. wins, t5s, 10s, and cups. by a long shot. i'm sure not all those were solely richard's.

Dale is 85 yo and his memory is still pretty good. When he was younger he was a BIG strong and tough man and a real nice guy. The death of Adam Petty was real hard on him. I hear he was like a second Dad to Adam. They don't make em like that any longer.

Great video, I'm 63 years old, and I've liked Richard Petty since I was around 8 years old, my all time favorite stock car driver. While growing up, several things were synonymous for me in stock car racing, (1)Richard Petty, (2) 426 Hemi's, (3) Mopar, and (4) STP racing. Long live the King.

Inman's 8 Championships aren't mentioned often enough today. Dale had it correct the 1st time when he said "We". Richard Petty wouldve been successful but he wouldn't have won 200 races & 7 championships without Dale Inman as crew chief. Inman, Richard, & Maurice were the perfect combination.

I've visited the Petty Museum and was amazed by how much history has been saved there, or at least reproduced. My granddaughters colored a picture of the Cars movie Strip Weathers Superbird, left them with the lady behind the counter along with our address. Richard signed both pictures and sent them to us, and I had them framed for the girls. I cannot adequately describe how much I have enjoyed watching your history videos- I just got started with the North Wilkesboro, Rockingham and now Petty Enterprises videos, can't wait to go down the rabbit hole even further!

Richard has been my driver since the 70s, but Dale don't keep apologizing for saying 'we'. You were the man behind the machine that got Richard, the car and team into victory lane!
I had a 1969 Dodge Charger with a 383 4speed in it that I would have loved to have gotten you under the hood of for an afternoon!
Like this video says you are the only crew chief with 8 championships, stop selling yourself short. It took everyone to make the team to achieve everything that you all did as a team. Thank you fir all the memories.

I absolutely LOVE these shop tour videos. This Petty Enterprises facility may not look like much compared to today's modern mega shops like you'll find at Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Racing or Joe Gibbs, but in its heyday, Petty Enterprises was a monster facility that dwarfed the competition. It is also interesting to see how the Petty shops grew and expanded over time. Most of the present day big operations are in one enormous single building, divided into multiple departments for specialty work. Petty's shop started as a shed and grew into numerous separate buildings over a 40 year period that kind of became their own specialty areas. Yet despite the large overall size. the Petty Enterprises shop still maintains that family business feel, whereas today's shops are more like a corporate fueled arms race that are as much geared toward keeping up with the Joneses as they are being functional facilities for building and maintaining race cars. The older shops are more spartan without as much fluff. As a blue collar guy, I find those more appealing and interesting.

My grandpa has a stand alone Garage (Glorified shed) that a smell will catch my attention and boom there I am Playing in the dirt with hot wheels while he was fixing something on a car. Visting older shops like that always have the history in the present and that homely feel

This is what it's all about. The Pettys (including Dale Inman) earned everything they got, and even though they had a "little bit" of success, they never forgot where they came from, and that's why I've always been able to relate to them so much. As the series grew, their shops had to grow to make it all work, but the family was always at the core of it all.

I vistited the Petty Museum back in 2001 , it was the first building on the right as you came into the driveway . It was more like a large 2 stall garage , and I believe Richards mom still lived in the house . If memory serves me right , there was a row of single stall garages out back . I have pictures of the inside .The door faced the driveway and as I was leaving , an older lady was driving by noticed me , gave me a big smile and waved , I never did know who it was .

I've gone by the Petty Museum on the way home from the fall CMS the past 3 years. October 2021, I was standing between the Museum's room with the merch, knives, Lee exhibit, etc. and the red floor room. Dale pulled up in his little, late model pick-up. After getting out of his truck, he walked over, asked how I was, and asked if we'd met. I told him "yes sir, we've met a handful of times - including here a year ago." He replied seriously "well, don't tell me your name because I don't remember names." He said it seriously but not in a mean manner. I suppressed my smirk, and we talked in the parking lot for maybe 10-15 minutes about the Roval; Nashville Fairgrounds; his well-told selected racing memories; his son-in-law, former NASCAR crewman/crew chief, and friend of mine Chris Hussey; etc. Then he was done. "OK, I gotta go in the office." Boom, over. But was another memorable experience as a #PettyLifer. Great video.

Petty's granddaughters went to the school I taught at. Missed teaching the youngest by a year. At graduation the first year, I was sitting up front with the faculty. I see a group of people come in late. In that group of people was a man wearing the iconic cowboy hat. I was sitting there thinking, "Cool! That's Petty!" Some of the other teachers talked about how the friends of the girls only knew him as the voice of the blue car in Cars.

Watching Dale's limp become more and more pronounced, he was taking deeper and deeper breath's and puff'n more and more as he led Mitchell and Logan through the buildings only goes to show how much it took out of his old, worn out body. BUT he was a trooper and continued on. Mostly because it brought back soooooo many years chalk full of memories,, he retrieved sooooo many snippits, albeit; 'movies in his mind' (my ol Grandma would call her memories that) of yesteryear and it was fun but it did take a toll on his body. We know the kids thanked him for the time he spent with them but perhaps it would take an elder like me (I'm 75) to notice he became more and more 'a hurt'n unit' as time went along.

Interesting? It’s gold Jerry! Pure gold! I could listen to Dale Inman all day. Not only does he have 8 cup championships as a crew chief with tons of stories, he has a neat voice and could probably even do radio or tv commentating.

I can remember being the biggest Richard Petty fan & my dad taking me & my twin brother to Atlanta motor speedway when I was 8yrs old in 1972 & my dad took us in the infield & he seen the silver fox David Pearson walking toward us & said go get his autograph & still to this day I can remember throwing my ice cream cone down saying no, I want to see Richard Petty.. man what a spoiled brat I was, I went onto like Harry Gant in the Skoal bandit & loved Rusty Wallace from 1987 until the day he retired but I will never forget king Richard! 🏁 Thank you Stapleton for bringing back memories, you & your wife do an awesome job bringing back history! I'm a fan for life!

I want to thank you for this video. I am one of many people that consider themselves the biggest Richard Petty fan on the planet. I have met the King once.
I took my family to the museum in 2017 but missed the King by one day. We were fortunate enough to talk to both daughters that work at the museum and get pictures. They were as down to earth as the could be.

This video reminds me of the 1972 movie 43 - The Petty Story. The film is really about Lee Petty, with brothers Maurice and Richard Petty playing themselves. Touches on the early history of NASCAR racing. Here in this video, Dale Inman gives a great first hand account of the iconic Petty racing enterprise.
