  • @KanyeTroll

    The set of pendulums act like discreet samples of a sinusoid which gradually increases in frequency. It starts to look more and more 'random' until the frequency reaches the Nyquist Frequency - the wavelength equals two samples. At that point, 'aliasing' occurs: the frequency appears to decrease and go through the exact same process in reverse, until it reaches 0 and all the pendulums are lined up again.

    • @tjonesauto

      I need you to make a post. That info was great.

    • @gedesatya6372
      @gedesatya6372 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Not really random -- since the increase is gradual, you can see that the pendulums reach 90 deg. (0:42) and 120 deg. (0:46) phase when the pendulums look like they are divided into smaller parts (360/90) and (360/120)

    • @fatmagamal3701
      @fatmagamal3701 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I thought of it like Fourier series, it's multiple harmonics that sum up to make one sinasudal wave and repeat itself again.. But I'm not really sure

    • @Raikaska
      @Raikaska 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Maybe I am not understing your point on aliasing, but it seems to me that in this case it's not that but just superposition of periodic signals with very similar individual frequencies that start in phase. Gradually, they start getting more and more out of phase, until finally most pairs are very desynqued (a pair can fall in sync again, but it doesnt matter since we want the whole system to be in phase again). This eventually happens and the process seems to repeat, albeit with less kinetic energy.
      Correct me if I'm wrong since this is very interesting, but I can't see the correlation with sampling here

    1. It starts looking like a spiral right before it serpentines like a snake before desynchronizing again
    2. How each of the above increase in duration with increasing period

    I love how from that perspective you can see the different patterns emerge, stages of various familiar shapes found in nature and then once the wave had split perfectly, the stages of patterns reversed back to how they were initially started. Good ol' Physics :)

    for anyone wondering the science behind this, the length of a pendulum is directly proportional to the square root of the time period of one oscillation of the pendulum
    what this means is that, the longer the pendulum, the more time it would take to complete one whole oscillation.
    keeping the lengths of the pendulum in successive declines in length, makes them have varying time periods, hence, causing the effect.
    really cool how basic oscillations bring about something like this

    This is awesome. You can use the same principle to produce another cool optical illusion with LEDs set up in a single row. Just modulate the brightness of the LEDs (just like the amplitude of the pendulum) and put a semi-transparent acrylic panel over the strip of LEDs to diffuse the light a little bit. Ends up looking like a lava lamp but also can be timed to happen in a cycle.
    The math behind this is super simple AND fun! A really great way to learn about trigonometry. It would be cool if you guys would include the simplified mathematical formula to calculate the period of each individual pendulum with regard to string length.
    I'm not exactly sure what the math is in this situation (I'm not a math person really), but I think it's close to the below equation. And I'm talking about how to describe the oscillation of each individual pendulum. Then to get them to do cool synchronized patterns like the video you just have to adjust the ratio of the lengths of string.
    Sin(2pi * (time / rate) where the rate is controlled by the length of the string

      Maybe too late, but the period of an ideal pendulum is T= 2 Pi Sqrt(length/gravitational constant)

    The pendulums have different periods because of their different lengths. Hence the phase relationships change continually throughout their motion. However, the time periods are commensurate (i.e. they have constant integral ratios). Hence the pattern repeats after a while.
