More information about the video content bellow:
    1. Jersey is a Crown Dependency officially ruled by the Duke of Normandy, a title currently held by the Queen. Jersey and the other Channel Islands represent the last remnants of the medieval Dukedom of Normandy that held sway in both France and England. Jersey is a British crown dependency, but is not part of the UK and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey.
    2. Charles II was proclaimed King when in exile in Jersey when Charles I was executed in 1649. Charles II spent several years in exile on the island and it was in Jersey in 1649 that he was proclaimed king. In recognition of the island’s help, King Charles II gifted several parcels of land in the colonies to the island’s Bailiff, Sir George Carteret - one of them became the state known as New Jersey. It’s been calculated that Jersey would fit 189 times into New Jersey - 95 times if the tide is out.
    3. During World War Two, Jersey was demilitarised. Two weeks later, German forces invaded and some 8,000 people travelled to England. Of those that were left behind, over 1,000 were deported to German camps. German fortifications were quickly built on the island, the remains of which are still very evident today. In May 1945, German rule of the island ended and Liberation Day is re-enacted here each year.
    4. Saint Helier is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. St Helier has a population of about 33,500, roughly 34.2% of the total population of Jersey, and is the capital of the Island.
    5. The island measures just 9 miles in length and 5 miles in width, Jersey may be a small island but can boast some of the biggest tides in the world. When it recedes, the immense body of water that surrounds us seems to melt into the horizon, only to surge back to shore with alarming speed making Jersey shrink by a fifth!
    6. Jersey has its own unique language. Although many visitors don’t realise it, this island has its own unique language. Called Jèrriaise, or Jersey-Norman French, it was spoken until at least the 1800s. Although it fell from favour and the island is now English speaking, traces of this ancient language remain. Don’t worry though, you won’t be expected to swot up on your Jèrriais before stepping onto Jersey!
    7. The bit about visiting Elizabeth Castle that I’m most interested in has nothing to do with the structure itself - it’s how you get there that sounds most exciting. To access the castle, you have two choices, which depend entirely on the tide. In high tide, you can take the Castle Ferry onto the grounds. However, in low tide you can access the castle by walking along the causeway.

Thank-you Sebastian for taking the time to make a video about our beautiful island. Our capital has not been granted city status by the Crown, and is, therefore, a town. You mention our patron saint having his head cut off by pirates. You can see the parish crest of Saint Helier on the base of the cross in your picture. It is of two crossed axes - the weapon used to martyr Saint Helier.

I'm from Jersey. Excellent video. However Jersey French (jerriais) was still spoken in rural areas well into the 1980s by older people and French was more common upto the early twentieth century. The island is so small we speak more of 'town' (for St Helier) than using the word 'city' . Population is now 100,000 and is so overpopulated there are now housing problems.

Very well done, thank you! In particular Number 2 is very interesting but not widely known - even I as an over 60 year old Guernseyman just found that out recently.

Good info. The music is loud and makes it difficult to understand you at moments. Thanks

Yes, I really want to learn Jerriais but there is literally nowhere online and it isn't taught at my school which is really annoying. (also virtually everyone speaks English. Jersey French is just this dead language that no one speaks anymore).
