    London Heathrow is a beast of an airport. You have only got to look at some of the live feeds from there to see long haul departures leaving and departing there every few minutes. It's easy to see why it's taken the number 1 slot.

    • @ross4
      @ross4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, and it's so slot restricted that it makes the most sense for airlines to fly the largest planes possible.

      Heathrow requires a whole mini fleet to fly there if you have multiple flights

      It’s been operating as a connecting hub from Europe and Africa to the US and Canada for decades. It has massive competition now from other European hubs but the large population living in the London area support the viability of the hub.

    I recently went on a long haul flight via Qatar Airways from Doha to San Francisco. The service in both airports was outstanding, so I would technically argue that every major airport that we know is great for long haul flights.

    I will be flying between two of them soon, actually. Sydney (being my local airport) and Dubai. I will be going onward to Dublin, but that’s not on the list obviously.
    On a seperate note however, I am surprised that Haneda has surpassed Narita as the busier long haul airport. Having previously lived in Tokyo and flown out of both airports, Haneda was (and until recently still was) the more domestically oriented airport, while Narita was primarily handling the international traffic despite being smaller than Haneda. I guess the difference in weekly departures now just coincides with the airports’ size.

    I rarely fly out of MIA. I’m only about 100 miles north of it but my experience there hasn’t been pleasant: long lines, crazy traffic if I choose to drive. I’m not particularly aware of what might be causing the reduced long-haul traffic there.

    I always fly out of MEL. Every time I fly for work it's to SYD. Late last year I went to JFK via DOH (2x14hrs back to back, don't recommend it). Later this year I'm going to FRA, via KUL (there) and BKK (back). Also via MCT, but that's not on the list. I've successfully avoided LHR since 2001.
