CORRECTION...as of May 2024 per US census, Atlanta was ranked 6th largest metropolitan area surpassing both Wash DC and Philadelphia. Stating Atlanta isn't even in the top ten US cities for population is incorrect. As for the city population of Atlanta being the state capital, 1/2 of the population within the perimeter (Atl beltway) isn't even in the city limits. Atlanta hasn't expanded its city limits since the civil war so its city area isn't actually reflective of the real city metro population. By realistic metro city sprawl on a map, Atlanta would be comparable to Houston or Dallas in metro area size also with not having any natural barriers like the ocean to hamper it's expansion.
Where Atlanta is located makes it work amazingly well as a stop over point for long international and domestic flights through under served cities in us.
