If you want to be a Raider you must first and foremost be a Reconnaissance Marine! Two deployments with Battalion then transfer to a Force Reconnaissance Company and do two deployments with them. Then become a Raider. Or, get your degree, become an officer, and live a happier life where ever you go in the military.

I was a tank mechanic in the Marines( 2145/46) . Worked on M-60A1 tank hull and turret, and a M1A1 system technician, trained hull, turret , and fire control.
After discharge, I went to work for a government contractor at NTC Ft. Irwin . As of last year, the Marine Corps has decommissioned all of there tank battalions. 3D tanks was decommissioned after gulf war 1, and last summer , 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th tanks were decommissioned. The tanks were trucked off from each base. There are no longer tank crewmen or mechanics for tanks. Sad day for the Corps after a 100 year history.

Sign for a DG contract and talk to the special screener to go 26xx.
When you reach Goodfellow then volunteer for RRP and get started in the pipeline. The first 3 months they focus on physically building you up while you go through one of the hardest intel courses in the corps. Its ran by the air force so its pretty fuckin cush.
You get a TS out of it and good certs while getting to do recon shit and lice the life prepping for MARSOC and doing a damn important job to the MAGTF

SIGINT opened so many doors for me, wasn’t pretty for the first few years but when we needed a team member who could do SSE and some door kicking, I got a lot of chances.
Once you prove yourself on a team you become the first pick so whatever you choose do it 110% and it will happen.
Most importantly is regardless of what you do your reputation is more valuable than your MOS in most situations, let’s say there are two dudes that fill your roll, are they gonna take the guy who gets it done professionally or the dude that is technically sound and is a hard chargers but is a Shitbag to the team...

I was Army as a 91W Combat Medic, then Medivac the Balkans, Iraq and then Afganistan. Got burned out after 3 deployments. So I got out and went Air Force Reserves. Became a Maintainer (Crew Chief) for A-10's....LOVED THE JOB! Did'nt know I had that skill set in me! But dealing with the chemicals eventually caused burn rashes on my skin and was eating away at my skin. Tried to hide it. pushed myself! Long story short, ended being "voluntold" to switch MOS's. I went into Cauality Affairs in the Services career field in the Air Force.....I was trying to make 20 so I could get a pension out of it and want to (in the Reserves) retire at 60. Got deployed again, several more times totaled out and was medically retired. I live in Norway now. Do not have the same support that most have in the US, but I carved my own world out again. dropped weight and off all except one med! Would I do it all over again? YES...even if I knew what was going to happen. working on getting back into shape...slowly!! Life is good!!

CI/HUMINT specialists must learn to be adept in both CI / HUMINT and must grow to have a working knowledge of the organizations, operations, and techniques employed by foreign intelligence services and terrorist organizations. You don't HAVE to be infantry to go MARSOC or Recon, but in Recon's case, it certainly helps. If you are not 03XX and want to be recon, you will have to wait (most likely) until it is time for you to re-enlist, and then go back to ITB before you can go to BRC.
Also, I don't completely agree with "being infantry means you have no time to prepare for being a Raider". Everything you do as 03XX are skills that will be second nature to you by the time you can go to A&S that most other non-03s will (most likely) struggle with.

  • @allenblaylock3941

When I went in you couldn’t go in as Recon. After MCT, we did the seabag drag to holding before the next ITB company started. During the 2 week hold there was a SSgt and a Gunny from 1st Recon Bn that showed up and asked for volunteers for recon. I was on burial duty and wasn’t there. After ITB, I was sent to Okinawa, Japan and went to 3rd Recon Bn. 92-93 then sent state side to 29palms to E Co 2/7 3rd Plt. Got out on a hardship (honorable) discharged in 94 to help my mom (father was diagnosed w/terminal lung cancer (I’m the only kid). I’m 49 and miss it so bad.

Salty Recon guys with a chip on their shoulders thinking they’re always right and usually getting shuffled around teams since they don’t understand team dynamics. Truthfully, go Counter-Intel or if you don’t meet the minimum GT scores, go contract Recon to get guaranteed jump and dive pay. If you fail selection(u wont) or ITC (probably wont) u can always go back to ur jump and dive pay and the great ship life deployments Recon guys have.

0211's would be a good asset. You specialize in Counter-intelligence and interrogations- catch a bad guy? You can interrogate him right there. They can also screen for insider threats or conduct counter-intelligence ops. These guys are also language qualified as well. Only thing is, 0211 isn't an entry level MOS.

Hey Nick, have you ever heard of a reservist making it into MARSOC??? I have a buddy who is a Avionics marine( reservist) who put in his MARSOC package recently. He has a perfect PFT and CFT with a 1st class rifle score. I dont recall if he has passed intermediate swim qual. His active duty counter parts mistake him with a combat mos because he is built like a brickhouse. I was curious if reservist have made it into MARSOC since my buddy has a Avionics mos and he is a reservist

Hey I was wondering how leave worked? I watched another video of a recon marine and he said he’s was always busy with training he only had took like 30 days of leave in 4 years, is that true, this is the mos I want but I have a family, I would like the same amount of leave capability as any other MOS

Chose a MOS? You guys got to chose your MOS? I got assigned to be a cook (with an ASVAB of 126? LOL). I traded "up" in boot camp (cooks are great, but not for me) to Combat Engineer (1371). Later, I lateral moved to Interrogator-Translator (0251). I really liked the CE job, but I knew I wanted something else. In the Intel field, I got to learn a second language, learn interrogation, and play with a lot of "special" operators (LOL) and we provided a lot of intel for the ground guys. I had a "good" time in Panama, El Salvador, the Pentagon, etc.... But, in '87 I got out, still miss those guys and those times (but not heat rash, or the snakes), I'm often sorry I missed the "show" in Iraq. I tried to re-enlist in 2001, but I was too old.

    Dear Nick,
    My question is:
Can I try out for Marine Recon if I wear glasses/contacts? I am not completely blind without glasses & my vision is correctable to 20/20, but I'm considering perhaps getting LASIK surgery. I've never seen a Recon Marine with glasses. I could imagine that going through water training/diver school would be difficult without accommodations such as prescription scuba mask.
Thank you for the great advises in regards to MOS.

I’m typing here to get updates on this

    • @adams651
      @adams651 5 ปีที่แล้ว

There are some career fields that can end up doing special stuff with vision correctable to 20/20 but all ground combat operations fields that I know about require close to 20/20 and not color blind. LASIK is not recommended as your eyes never fully heal but there are waivers available if you do it prior service and there are no complications. LASIK can be an automatic NO for certain schools. If you want to get eye surgery PRK is the better option for the future but it costs more, has slightly longer recovery time, and higher chances of some types of complications.
I am not 100% sure about Marine Recon specifically but I would be very surprised if they allowed eyeglasses, that would be better asked of someone currently serving.

If I went infantry recon route with the later hope of joining the raiders, how would the transition work? Do you do the full four year contract before recon pulls you or do you go to recon first and go to infantry if you fail? On top of that, how would that transition from the recon to raiders work? Would you just do two years in recon and then try to be selected or must you do the full term first? Sorry if this was answered in the video but it didn’t stick out.

What is the cutoff age for MARSOC? I don’t know if you’ve answered this before but I ask because I’m having a lot of trouble getting in because of MEPS and I’m pushing 23 now, I’m perfectly healthy but Meps keeps asking for medical shit I’ve either already given them or stuff I can’t produce.
