Christmas 1993 is when I got my Megadrive too, and it was the model 2 bundled with Sonic 2, and also Sonic 1. I was only three years old at that point though, so probably spent the first 6 months or so watching my mum or dad play it more than I did.
Adam, I have to say my brother’s favorite console....Saga Genesis. My brother was born in March ‘79 and I have a sister born in November ‘81. We all have memories playing video games. I remember when we got the Genesis....we would play Golden Axe & Altered Beast for hours!!!!!
Always nice to see you geek out about this stuff lol. I grew up with Nintendo consoles and I have to admit Sega was always way more interesting with their hardware and software. I think the best thing about the Genesis by far is the soundchip, the Streets of Rage games sound amazing on a good soundsystem. Annoys me to see people shit on Genesis sound a lot.
AdamKoralik I've watched and read about this quite a bit, and I'm still not sure what the actual story is. Some theorize MJ didn't like the sound the console produced, so his music was pulled at his request. Some say it's still his music, but he is uncredited. Howard Drossin (Comix Zone) and Jun Senoue (sp?) are credited for it. There seem to be either remaining parts, or at least huge influences. As is also mentioned, he was facing charges at the time, so his name was dropped being another theory. I'm sure one of his producers claims it is indeed his music. In any case, it's a great sound track. Edit: One of the games that really would have benefited from an actual CD version! Comix Zone and the Streets of Rage series, being two of my other favourite soundtracks of the MD.
Really interesting look at one of my all time favourite systems. Thanks for mentioning when Sonic was released too, I had a mini-argument with a dude in a store recently who insisted that Sonic was the first game released for the Mega Drive.
Sega Channel was the best. $13 a month for 50ish games. So so good. Better than renting games before buying. Sega Channel is how I found Flicky, Ristar, Streets of Rage 2, and Biohazard Battle. In my opinion, Sega is the most innovative console company ever. People can argue Nintendo, but Sega did so much stuff that often gets overlooked.
Hey Adam, great video as always! I wanted to let you know about some things that you might not be aware of: All versions of the CDX support RGBS however there is a problem with the video output so only certain RGBS cables work. You need one with boosted C-Sync. Also, the Genesis 3 works with the 32X/PBC, but it requires an easy mod. Also, there is a true digital HDMI mod on the way for the Dreamcast. It bypasses the DAC chip that creates analog video so you get a true digital signal. It is better than VGA. There is a true digital HDMI adapter for the GameCube right now. It just takes the Digital AV port's digital audio/video signals and converts them to usable digital DVI-D signals over HDMI and Digital Audio signals over TOSLINK. It isn't in cable form yet because we cant get the connector needed. Since it requires soldering to the mobo, it works on DOL-101s and allows 480p on those models.
So much props for mentioning Rocket Knight Adventures! I love it and it's perhaps my favorite Genesis game. Great video, I can't wait for the next one.
Hotsex spy Just one...just one. The common belief there is that LJN was long dead by that point, and mostly known for shit. Activision (I'm pretty sure it was them) owned them and hadn't used them for anything. Activision made Spirit of Speed 1937, realized it was shit, and threw the name LJN on it, so as not to hurt Activision's name. LJN's last function was to be a stamp of crap.
The Terminator comparison with Sonic is a bad one. Terminator 2 is subjectively better than the Terminator to some people. I find Terminator 1 a far superior film.
***** So does my dad. For me story wise as a singular film, T1 is better, but as a movie as a whole, T2. But the general consensus is T2 is better. But we can all agree T3 has almost no redeming qualities, save for Arnie, and was a pos thing that should've ended in a vat of molten acid. And yes i mean molten acid, however it's made idc.
i like the pulpy and visceral action-chase scenes in The Terminator a heck of a lot more than the traditional epic look of T2. It wasn't nearly as gritty and intense as the first. The pace of the Terminator is some of the best any movie has ever had. Only Die Hard and Robocop come to mind when it comes to the pacing.
There is nothing more intense that to me in film as the Tech Noir scene and the Police station scene. The Terminator is a fusion genre piece, with elements of horror, sci-fi, romance, action, and noir. It was done by a true mastermind who knows how the human mind works. Nothing since the Terminator has James Cameron done anything as meaningful as his masterpiece, The Terminator.
Not growing up during that time it's hard to be one of the other. Both consoles have totally different vibes and experiences from each other, and have fantastic titles. Something you don't find with other console generations
Genesis was clearly the better system...even the music was badass. Streets of Rage 2 music was awesome, and so was Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion...play it inebriated and thank me later.
the music was better for some styles, the gritty "grunge" sound was cool, but for more "orchestra" or "classic" stuff the snes sounds better. the digital effects like punches and voices sound better on the snes too.
AdamKoralik Is it possible to build the Master System power base on top of a European Mega Drive with the slop adapted to play Japanese games? Here in Europe it is not easy to find a variety of Mega Drive games so I d like to expand my possibilities without renouncing to have a Master System collection...
Remember playing Comic Zone via the sega channel in my friends basement. The sega channel device used the local cable company connection to download the games. Sega has always been ahead of their time.
AdamKoralik Indeed. I knew there were lots of models of the Genesis/Megadrive but I never realized just how much. After watching this video, I appreciate Sega a lot more than what I did :)
That Genesis vs SNES discussion while Adam has Atari 2600 in his childhood he mentions is me pretty much with today's PS4 vs Xbox One while I'm here enjoying a Genesis.
Sega channel was awesome. Far ahead of its time even now. We will probably start to see streaming game services soon that can surpass it, but Sega channel will always have been the first.
Adam, don't ever stop making your videos. I feel nostalgia every time I watch you talk about these system's. I truly feel something is lost or something is missing with these new systems. Granted there are great games on the new generation consoles but with all the problems of dev's and there shit riddled day 1 fixes and charging dlc for every freakin game I'm starting to hate gaming on any system. What I hope for is another video game industry crash so we can finally go back to where we started.
Thank you very much for your videos Adam, (i' m also a shenmue fan from france, i even made a fancard game about it ^^). This video is 4 years old and i'm sure you know this story already but i read somewhere that macdonald treasure land was a cornerstone concerning the birth of treasure and is somehow linked to gunstar heroes, making the macdonald game was a way to earn the right to make gunstar heroes. There, i found the story : " Treasure was founded on June 19, 1992. Around the time of founding, the company had just over ten people. Even though most of the staff made games for the Super NES at Konami, they wanted to develop Gunstar Heroes for the Sega Genesis because the system's Motorola 68000 microprocessor was necessary for the visuals and gameplay they were striving for. Treasure approached Sega for a publishing contract. At first, they were not granted approval because they lacked a track record, but Sega instead contracted them to develop McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (1993). Several months into development, they were granted approval to work on Gunstar Heroes. Treasure staff was split into two teams to work on both games in parallel. They had a staff of around 18 people at the time, most being ex-Konami programmers. The staff felt they had more freedom working under Sega than Konami. McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure was completed first, but Treasure decided to finish and release Gunstar Heroes first because they wanted their debut to be an original game". Again, thanks a lot for your videos, old and new. Waiting for shenmue 4 ^^
Michael Jackson had a partnership with Sega in the early 90's. To go along with the Moonwalker video game, there was also a Moonwalker Arcade game as well, The music is Sonic 3 is very similar to he tracks in the Dangerous Albums. Songs like Jam and Who Is It? were taken, and sped up, to mirror the style of Sonic's gamplay. It remained a secret because of the Child Molestation case that he had to fight against back then. Janet Jackson also sampled a Sonic track, and used it to record Together Again.
Love these videos! Most of what I know about Sega I read in the Console Wars novel as well as a couple of other books. It's interesting to hear this kind of a perspective on the hardware, though.
I got my Genesis late in it's lifespan, around 1995 for my sixth birthday, and I loved it. Got so much mileage out of the 6-Pak cart that it came with. The only thing that annoyed me in hindsight was that Majesco (who took over production of the console or so I've heard) is that they just bundled the console with the three-button controller and not a six-button one
wait... what!? jacko secretly did music on sonic 3?!!?! thats mental! man, this was such an awesome video. my favourite console as a kid, my absolute all time favourite in terms of nostalgia, and still a console with so much to give.. theres dozens of games on my shelves ive yet to play.. really well done mate. lots of obscure and fascinating info in this vid.
They should've aggressively marketed the all-in-one unit that was a Genesis, Sega CD, and karaoke machine! It could've been a hit for house parties across all ages.
I love getting the history on these things that I didn't know as a kid. I was an original adopter of the 3DO back in 1993, but I only understood the business model and its impact on that console when I saw your video on it this year. Keep these things coming all the way to the beginning!
Main games i loved for Genesis were Splatter House, General Chaos, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Toe Jam and Earl and... The Haunting? I think it's called? It was a game where you did all sorts of horrific scare tactics to this family as revenge and you had so much time to get them to move out of the house. Too much fun. I loved many other games on the Genesis. Great console. Oh, and NHL 95 might still be my favorite hockey game to this day. Along with Mutant League Hockey.
Loved the video Adam! This is actually my favorite console of all time. Just wanted to mention that my CDX supports RGB, I just use the same cable as the Model 2. I hook all my consoles to my SACRT TV and the CDX looks as good as the previous models. My friend got one a while ago and when using RGB, everything looked "dim". So maybe there are different board revisions out there?! Maybe my friend's system needs some new caps?! I don't know.
Thinking bout getting a genesis so really appreciate the video didn't think there were so many variations. My first game might either be Comic Zone or Rocket Knight
In 1993, my brother & I were going to my Grandad's for Christmas & Mum & Dad told us to bring the NES with us with all the games which confused us. Christmas rolls along & there are two massive boxes plus other gifts. I had one small one thinking it was a WWF VHS I wanted but I opened it & it was Alien 3 for the MEGA DRIVE. I suddenly realised what one of the big boxes was. We got a MEGA DRIVE with a MEGA CD. Best Christmas ever! Lol. The MEGA DRIVE was my uncle's first so we got a lot of games including Duel Test Drive II which my friends kept borrowing. My NES went to my cousin who got robbed before Christmas. Aladdin was also one of my favourite games for the MEGA DRIVE. We had that until 1997 when we got a PSONE. Cleaning out my garage I found my old MEGA DRIVE with power cord. I bought a SCART & a controller & it works!!! But the MEGA CD is broken & the area it connected to is exposed & I don't have the cover for it which sucks & I bought my friends old NES. Lol
The Sega Genesis was my first system ever and it was awesome. Streets of rage 1 and 2! Hey Adam, I enjoy your content, but dude , you be low key flexin', love it!! He showed the genesis, yet have other versions noice! 💪🔥
A thing to note is many people have done videos and discussions on this. Prices are skyrocketing, due to synthetic price raises not value raises. Basically sellers are saying they want more money, and charging more and more. ITT: Greed. I got killzone for 5.99, but many will try to sell you the same game used, and scratched for 59.99 or even 299$.
shining force 1 and 2 were my favs, second being road rash. and of course the classic nhl 95, and super street fighter 2. Phantasy star had some good rpgs too. I dont remember that genesis does what nintendont ads, but i do remember the coffee, tea, SEGA ads
Always watching these fourth generation cause this was my childhood too Man! How pissed of I was when I came from Manila with a Mega Drive and couldn't play genesis games in the U.S.
The SNES may be more powerful but the Genesis is my favorite 4th gen console because it was the first gaming console I have ever owned. My first one was also a model 2. Great video Adam keep up the great work.
One of my favorite games at the arcade was Road Blasters, and the Genesis version of that port is amazing! It's very close to the arcade version...except for the driving wheel with a fire button controller of course..But I would say that the Genesis controllers do a good job in lieu of a driving wheel controller. There is in fact an attachment for the Genesis console, its called the Per4mer turbo driving wheel. There was a company that made the wheel for quite a few different consoles including the Saturn, but the Genesis wheel? That is super rare..Ive never even got a sniff of one out there, never even seen a TH-cam video showcasing one: How I want one so bad!
Love these series of videos. One note on the six button controller. It was NOT added just to one-up the SNES (exclusively)... it was actually released in conjunction with Street Fighter 2. Unlike the SNES it had the the same layout as the Street Fighter 2 arcade stand up unit. I remember saving all my money as a kid to get SF2 AND two 6 button controllers. Personally I love the six button controller and it became my favorite controller for the Genesis. Love the series.
Great video Adam. Your example of Aladdin is certainly the most well known for illustrating the difference between SNES and Genesis games with the same title, but I would also mention The Adventures of Batman and Robin. The Genesis version looks amazing but is incredibly difficult.
This is my 1st time hearing about Pier Solar. I just googled images it. Damn, it looks awesome. A real good full use of the power of the genesis Fantasy game. I gotta find that game.
You have a talent to just relax and be your self in front of the camera and it makes for a great video. Thanks for sharing all your info , it’s a pleasure to watch!

all those add on combos really amazed me, never knew about those. Thnx for the video!!
sega advertising guy: what are you making? Nintendo:a snes. sega:put a Genesis in there ohh wait.
Christmas 1993 is when I got my Megadrive too, and it was the model 2 bundled with Sonic 2, and also Sonic 1.
I was only three years old at that point though, so probably spent the first 6 months or so watching my mum or dad play it more than I did.
Lol I started with the PS2 era 🤣🤣🤣 feels like I missed out
Adam, I have to say my brother’s favorite console....Saga Genesis.
Joey Brown Oh I completely agree. People dog the Genesis' sound capabilities constantly.
Joey Brown Agree. I like Mega Drive sound more. SNES has horrendous amounts of reverb in almost every single game.
Really interesting look at one of my all time favourite systems. Thanks for mentioning when Sonic was released too, I had a mini-argument with a dude in a store recently who insisted that Sonic was the first game released for the Mega Drive.
Dan Wood (kookytech.net) Yeah, those kinds of debates are always "fun."
I simply have to suggest the game Garfield Caught In The Act. It's a licensed game, but it's a really fun platformer that you can get really cheap.
Have you watched the videos on Nintendo does?
Yes
Sega Channel was the best. $13 a month for 50ish games. So so good. Better than renting games before buying. Sega Channel is how I found Flicky, Ristar, Streets of Rage 2, and Biohazard Battle. In my opinion, Sega is the most innovative console company ever. People can argue Nintendo, but Sega did so much stuff that often gets overlooked.
Genesis does what Nintendon't, I always love that Advertisement. Even I am a Nintendo Fanboy. XD
Hey Adam, great video as always! I wanted to let you know about some things that you might not be aware of:
All versions of the CDX support RGBS however there is a problem with the video output so only certain RGBS cables work.
19:38 - the original Tower of Power lol
I'm in the same boat with you on the sonic games. Sonic 2 is my all time favourite sonic game, and one of my all time favourites.
So much props for mentioning Rocket Knight Adventures! I love it and it's perhaps my favorite Genesis game. Great video, I can't wait for the next one.
ImperatorScab Thanks for watching!
Want to know something horrible, the Dreamcast had LJN games on it. Easily the worst games on the system.
AdamKoralik I think it was Universal that created LJN, hence most of the move tie-ins being mostly Universal property on the NES.
Hotsex spy Yeah, but I'm fairly certain they were sold off in the mid 90s. But...I could be wrong.
Hotsex spy Just checked, we were both wrong. It was Acclaim that bought them and did what I said. Not Activision.
AdamKoralik I see, thanks for clarifying that.
I loved my sega channel. I wish it still worked, they changed the games like once a month it was the best sega experiences I ever had.
With all due respect, I find T2 meh at best.
Eh. I do agree T1 has a better story.
i like the pulpy and visceral action-chase scenes in The Terminator a heck of a lot more than the traditional epic look of T2.
Snes is better.
Thank you for making this kind of vídeos. History about consoles is fascinating!
Thanks for watching!
AdamKoralik Is it possible to build the Master System power base on top of a European Mega Drive with the slop adapted to play Japanese games? Here in Europe it is not easy to find a variety of Mega Drive games so I d like to expand my possibilities without renouncing to have a Master System collection...
Imo, the great video game system ever made, so I was looking forward to this recap the most and, as expected, it was great.
TTGGrave
Another great video Adam. Keep them coming. The Mega Drive went down great here in the UK,it's awsome.
Rich Castle Thanks for watching!
Remember playing Comic Zone via the sega channel in my friends basement. The sega channel device used the local cable company connection to download the games. Sega has always been ahead of their time.
I was quite stunned when you showed all the different versions and add ons for it.
Stevie G Hopefully in a good way.
AdamKoralik Indeed. I knew there were lots of models of the Genesis/Megadrive but I never realized just how much. After watching this video, I appreciate Sega a lot more than what I did :)
That montage was very funny! I also can't believe the Sega Channel thing, that's insane.
That Genesis vs SNES discussion while Adam has Atari 2600 in his childhood he mentions is me pretty much with today's PS4 vs Xbox One while I'm here enjoying a Genesis.
Awesome video man! Keep it up your my favorite retro video game youtuber by far!
Dale Hebert
Hypertenzionz
Your video convinced me to buy a Genesis. Love the vids. Also, I would love to see a 3rd gen recap!
Oh man. All those boxed copies brings back memories. Those plastic boxes before they went red-and-cardboard were the best.
themblan Hell yeah!
There, i found the story :
" Treasure was founded on June 19, 1992.
I have my snes and genesis hooked up right next to each other looks so good
@AdamKoralik that cranberry analogy had me laughing for 5 minutes staright, your awesome man. love your videos.
+Geovanny Ayala Thanks for watching!
I love this video I always watch it like every 2 months.
Love these videos! Most of what I know about Sega I read in the Console Wars novel as well as a couple of other books. It's interesting to hear this kind of a perspective on the hardware, though.
Brooke-chan Thanks for watching!
Well done. I owned a Nomad while deployed overseas in Bosnia during the late 90s. I remember playing Comic Zone and it was so damned hard.
Scott Levine Thanks for watching! Did they supply you with batteries at least?
Not sure, it was a long time ago. Probably camped next to an outlet while playing it.
Yes!Looking forward to this.
Man, when you put in Sonic and Knuckles into the top of the 32x I just realized that the SEGA was growing and my first thought was SEGA Destructicons
wait... what!? jacko secretly did music on sonic 3?!!?! thats mental!
man, this was such an awesome video. my favourite console as a kid, my absolute all time favourite in terms of nostalgia, and still a console with so much to give.. theres dozens of games on my shelves ive yet to play..
really well done mate. lots of obscure and fascinating info in this vid.
shenmueso Yep, apparently he did some of it.
Glad you liked it.Though you might have a bit of a bias. ;)
I love this video. The Mega Drive/Genesis is and will always be my favourite console you really did the console justice with this vid.
Cheers
They should've aggressively marketed the all-in-one unit that was a Genesis, Sega CD, and karaoke machine! It could've been a hit for house parties across all ages.
I love getting the history on these things that I didn't know as a kid. I was an original adopter of the 3DO back in 1993, but I only understood the business model and its impact on that console when I saw your video on it this year. Keep these things coming all the way to the beginning!
Another fantastic video.. a trip back through history ..brilliant !
***** Thanks for watching!
After a long wait this is so satisfying to see in my sub box
Lol
Oh man I would have mentioned the version of Castlevania for the Genesis. That game is amazing!! Very awesome video none the less :)
The European version of Streets of Rage 3 is getting rarer all of the time and it goes for crazy prices.
My favorite console of all time I grew up with it in the 90s. I have the model 2 and I even have those wireless 6 button controllers.
Shockwave Ha, I forgot about the controllers. I have a set somewhere.
The Sega Genesis was my first system ever and it was awesome. Streets of rage 1 and 2! Hey Adam, I enjoy your content, but dude , you be low key flexin', love it!! He showed the genesis, yet have other versions noice! 💪🔥
Master System was such a great console. Many happy times playing my hero when I was a kid.
Please do generations 1-3. These generations series are awesome. Gen 3 is where I started with NES circa 1986 or 1987. Really looking forward to it.
shining force 1 and 2 were my favs, second being road rash. and of course the classic nhl 95, and super street fighter 2. Phantasy star had some good rpgs too.
I dont remember that genesis does what nintendont ads, but i do remember the coffee, tea, SEGA ads
Always watching these fourth generation cause this was my childhood too Man! How pissed of I was when I came from
Manila with a Mega Drive and couldn't play genesis games in the U.S.
MrLeo34 Thanks! Yeah, you're right about that.
The power converter is amazing. I got one for cheap back in the day!
