So glad to see you back at Sun Peaks ripping up those groomers... and great to see your footage of the new West Bowl lift area. Gotta say, the 8k footage 'seems' a lot crispier. I have the new Insta360 X4 (and had the previous X3), but haven't used it a whole lot yet, looking forward to testing it out when I get up to Canada in a month's time. Cheers!
Like dSLR cameras during the megapixel race, the benefits of resolution in a camera come from more than just rendering straight to output. It's about having more room to play with crops and edits. James *does* mention this at the end of the video, but I'll say it again. There are downsides, as well. James mentioned file sizes, which is true-shooting in 8K will require higher capacity storage media as well as hard drive space (including backups). Another downside of higher-resolution sensors is that the more pixels you cram into a sensor (of a given size), the smaller each pixel is and the worse it performs in low-light situations. Probably not much of a concern when we're using these for skiing-and both camera processors and noise reduction algorithms have gotten really good-but [arguably] worth mentioning. Great video, James! You've got me on the fence to pick one of these up.
8k is actually useful, unlike what most are saying... when you refame and edit the video you can now get a 1080 export instead of 720! This is because the whole 360 view is 8k so that's how you get 1080 with ur typical 90° fov.
The only problem is that to actually experience the 8k resolution, you would need an 8k monitor which are hard to come by as well as insanely expensive, so I think it would probably be more worth it to film in 4k at a higher framerate. That's just my opinion though.
100% However, the 8k gives you the ability to crop and zoom when editing and has a little less compression into 4k. I personally never have plans to upload at 4k but it helps retain some quality in the 360 filming and editing process which is sweet.
Great Video with the different comparisons of the Insta360 X4. I just got mine from your link. I look forward to playing with the different settings. Thanks for putting that video together.
I would like to see a higher frame rate, probably don’t really need the extreme resolution. My experience from the old days was that 780 at 60 fps was better than 1080 at 30. Any blurriness comes I think from judder on pans. A faster rate I think would also give you smoother foreground and bring medium distance objects up in sharpness. The distance in travel or pan, between frames is what lowers the clarity so bringing up the rate should make things sharper.
FPS is super important. The issue with the 360 cameras is that there is a big loss of quality during the export and stitching process. I also agree that 5.7k 60fps is better than 8k 30fps for action shots. However, the extra pixels on the 8k for more still shots are handy because it can actually be uploaded in 360. People watch TH-cam on TV's these days so that's where being able to upload in a true 4k is super helpful.
Sweet ....fun let um ride sunshine and smiles kinda day !!!Man love days like that empty slopes, ripping corduroy, and air in out at leisure,,,all that was missing was a nice IPA at your condo on wheels!!!!camera styles were fantastic James!!!! another banger can't remember the last fair day you have had mostly powder and sunshine. Keep the awsome days goin!!!
That's a wicked idea. My computer is old and can't handle that type of upload. It would explode hahahaa. Maybe one day when I upgrade my computer I can try it.
I have a suggestion you should render your video in 60fps even though the footage is 30 fps/24 fps because uploading in 60fps regardless of the footage's FPS is always better as youtube compression treats videos with a frame rate of 60 better (it will just have duplicate frames). This is well known in the editing community idk why youtube doesn't say this
I edit myself. Use insta360 app or desktop software. Imovie is my editor. I only use a mic when you see me holding one in the intro. Everything else is action cam mic.
@@riseandalpine Thx. Pro tip - leave your keys in the van. The odds of getting things stolen are probably lower over time (years) than the dreaded discovery of open pocket full of pow where keys used to be. I do find both tend to alter the quality quite a bit and create some sort of brightness difference at the stitching line. Thanks for the epic videos! Cheers from germany
Resolution is a bit tricky. Most people sit far enough away from their screens that their eyeballs literally can’t distinguish the pixels, and 1080 and 4k will look extremely similar to each other (at least for video content, gaming is a bit different). All that to say, 8k is just a gimmick. At least until we all start having gigantic 100 inch+ TV’s. It’ll just create unnecessarily large data files for you to manage LTT has some good videos on this topic. I think he shoots in 8k because then he can crop in post production more easily and release in 4k - I think this is likely the best use case for you as well
no, the 8k works by having two 4k cams on both sides, and this is because 360 cams were notoriously bad for zooming in or cropping (when editing) up until x3/x4, so now there is a 360 cam available where you can film 4k on any given frame (opposed to two 2k cams, 4k)
Yup - you're totally right. There is less compression of the 8k 360 footage so it tends to look more like a true 4k shot. Also the cropping and zooming is better with less blurriness!
It's a mono mount designed by Deorum ski poles. It attaches directly to their pole. Before they made this I used to just glue my own mount on the top of my pole. I talk about the poles in this video if you want to learn more :) th-cam.com/video/6OWmvHP1UA0/w-d-xo.html
In 8k, the details are a little more crisp and noticeable. I suspect a future 12k video resolution would just make details more crisper, and then, it doesn’t matter past that resolution. Past 12k would be overkill…
I personally don't like the look or feel. When you run the pole mount you can't pole plant normally and end up skiing differently (with a still arm). I can ride harder just holding the selfie stick and not having the counterweight. Also one less thing to lug around!
You're going to get more value out of higher FPS. My youtube app usually defaults to like 480 or 720p. I am always moving the quality up but I bet most viewers are not doing this. Not sure if people watching on computers versus the app experience this different. I'm betting the videos look way nicer on the editors computer.
Totally. When it comes to phone watching it doesn't make that much of a difference. Since I stare at screens a lot I always flick on 4k when I have good wifi. The main nice thing about the 8k is a reduction in compression and ability to zoom a bit more of your 360 video without getting too much blurriness. I don't see myself actually ever uploading in 8k.
The mouth mount seems stupid as an idea. How well does it actually work? How much bite pressure does it take. How much damage does it do to your teeth when you land hard and take a knee to the face?
The angle looks shockingly good. Probably the best POV angle in the world. The functionality is horrible. You gotta tense hard to hold on to it and I hate the feeling. Surfers use it all the time. However, if you're going big enough to where your knees are often hitting your face, a mouth guard might be the call hahhaa

I actually prefer HDR - makes the TV feel closer to a window into a remote reality.
To be honest I film all of the videos on this channel with 5.7k/30fps. Maybe I'll start mixing in more 60fps but since I don't run slo mo often it doesn't matter much to me.
@@coookalo i like 30 fps. 60 fps is too smooth sometimes. Whats interesting tho is youtube makes 60fps videos have better quality so many people will export a 30 fps video in 60 fps (there will just be duplicate frames) and the video will have better quality after uploaded to youtube because of youtube compression .
R&A - Love your videos. However, I'm concerned about the mouth-mount apparatus and the long-term number it might do to your jaw. I would strongly encourage you to get an opinion from an orthodontist, or even just your dentist. I'm rather confident that with long-term use, with that much weight on your jaw (and especially compression weight), could really be doing you a serious disservice in the not-too-distant future. If, after wearing it for one lap, it feels like you chewed about 12 packs of gum, that is not a good thing. Just looking out for you, young man 😊.

Never seen a magic carpet onto chairlift befor?
People here in Oz cant even get onto a normal chair without taking out half the mountain anyway.

No, 8k is not needed since almost nobody can actually view the footage in 8k on youtube. 😆 It's a cool ability to have though
8k is still 4k its only “8k” cause of the two cameras. So if you want 4k footage it needs to be filmed in 8k.
