Darren you make things look so straight forward and easy. When I do it that's not usually how it works. I know a lot of it is experience and knowledge. I didn't know about the spring so I would have taken the motor off and bamn, retract! Great video! You're taking the repair shops lunch.

I knew the awning is spring loaded but you were the absolute best in showing how to simply handle that issue. On my way now to pick up a new motor.

I'd never thought to use a tool battery either but my house battery is right there anyhow.
Mine has an intermittent issue and I've run a jumper to the motor. I'll need to check that wire.

Thank you for the video and troubleshooting tips! Our awning wasn't moving at all. I disconnected at the motor power connector, had good voltage from the trailer, and the motor worked when I connected to a 12V battery. Plugged everything back together and it worked. I suspect that there was just a little corrosion in the connector that caused a bad electrical connection, and that the unplugging / testing / re-plugging cleaned it up sufficiently.

And you can also use wire ties on both sides to hold your awning in a non-moving position, and it will not roll out, but I do like the Vice grip idea for reassurance that it’s not gonna roll out on me doing it by myself

Regardless of the issue, just watching your videos today have given me more information to decide if I want to have a professional address the issue or do it myself. If I do have someone else tackle the problem I know more about how things work and we can discuss in the same language and I have more knowledge to spot someone trying to take advantage or an honest technician. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!

VERY nice right to the nitty gritty vid in a very understandable by anyone video ...reason I watched is I have a friend in washington (im in montana)who is a widow that had to move to an rv because of her husbands passing and not enough income to stay in their old apartment, which had the rent jacked about the same time as her loss....anyway her awning dosen't work and its getting too warm in the rv so I sent her your vid. ....window a/c wont keep up... maybe her brother in law can help her get it working with the instructions in your vid... tx keep up the good work!!!

Mine would not blow a fuse when it extended but blow a fuse when it retracted I have checked all the wiring make sure everything is tight and I am about to check the motor and see if it’s getting power but rain will totally junk out a motor real quick, and i had the awning leaning unknowing at the time on the side for rain runoff

that you diagnosed and that others have mentioned in these comments. except that the motor will still turn to roll the awning out, but not retract.

Mine extends, but when I hit the button to retract, it was blowing a fuse every time you just gotta go chase the wiring with a 12 V voltage meter and then go to the motor itself and I believe my problem is in the motor I have a Solara

Next time I would start the screws first. The top one was threaded right but the other two you cross threaded and just ran them in. He will probably not have to change it again before the trailer lifetime is up. It kind of reminded me of the set up people from the furniture store when they took the screws and put them in the impact and ran them in without starting them first. I made them take it back and bring a new one

Darin, Very informative and I love your approach to provide information. and make it personalized with your jokes. My problem is not the fact that the awning does not work, it's a mystery, and I want to know if you know if this is possible or my trailer is haunted. My Forest River Vibe is a Year old, and the awning switch is working fine (in (retract) is up switch, out (extend) is down switch) today it is reversed?!! (up switch is down? and down is in) Its has switched polarity inside the wall or the motor. what should I do? I can buy those little label stickers and put them on the switch and forget this ever happened. Thanks, Jim

    • @MyRVWorks
      @MyRVWorks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That does seem rather odd. One thing I'd be curious to check, at your fuse panel on your DC side, use a digital multimeter in DC mode and look at the panel silk screen to verify which wire lug is listed as POS and NEG. Verify the polarity is correct at that point. If the batteries were connected backwards that may have change the polarity. Just a thing to verify... If all that checks out okay, you should be able to pop that switch off the wall and reverse two wires - outside edges of the switch terminal. Here's a video where I talked a little bit about the switch wiring. th-cam.com/video/Y9IwkK18mrQ/w-d-xo.html

We use 12 volt batteries for our cordless tools so we always have a 12 volt power source with us. We then we make a jumper that can be used with test leads. Here's a link to our sister company T3interface.com where you can get more information on all the different test leads that we offer. myrvworksstore.square.site/shop/tools/3

Gotta love the engineering of the wiring of our place to run it, and the LED light all down the back of the pinch point of the struts and only a plastic cover with some wire and showing that eventually will get pinched retract in and extending all the time I think these places want you to bring it into the RV shop for major repairs, when it should be an easy fix for the average Joe

      Hi Tim,
I have been using my same awning motor since 2007. Some go on much longer than that! With so many new RV's being produced in the last few years it is possible the ones made recently (the last few years) have some short cuts to keep up with the demand... I have nothing to back that up except for service calls on NEW awnings. Just my observation.
      Happy Camping,
      Darren

So I have a similar Solara/Lippert Regal style 20ft awning that for whatever reason gave way and deployed and clipped a telephone pole at the end of last season. The arms and the main awning and spool are still intact, but it was enough blow to destroy both the power and the idler heads.
I’ve finally gotten around to ordering new heads and plan to make the repairs before spring. In studying how this awning is designed, I find it dumb that the only thing that holds the awning retracted is the motor itself. That seems to be my point of failure from what I can deduce.
My question is there a good way to secure or lock these awnings during travel. I don’t know if I want to put my faith in the power head gearbox again. Thanks.

What brand motor did you use as a replacement?

I like the cut of your jib young man. With your reference to Schoolhouse Rock I knew instantly that we could be friends. I have one of these pieces of crap with an auxiliary control pad / console at the bottom of the motor side arm. It says patent pending and I don't have very high hopes for it. It's a terrible design from the weatherproofing aspect and is an obvious weak link. Anyway current situation: I'm at a KOA in Mt. Gilead trying to check out an go home but the awning is in the down position and seems to be disengaged from the motor, meaning I can't use the 7/16 drill to put the awning up and in place again. I've got heavy-duty zip ties and Gorilla Tape. I'm about to make a mess so I can get home safely without more damage. Ideas?

Hi Darren, I've been looking for a video that shows how you made the wiring (test leads?) that you use. Is there one? I have all the components needed, but am not 100% on how you made that beneficial wiring. It looks to be pretty good for trouble shooting and I'd like to make one as well!

We started a company and have included that test lead set in our offering. You can get some ideas on the latest version of it here. And if you want you can buy it directly from us too...

@@MyRVWorks Thank you, I figured it out myself from this video. Was able to use my battery pack to find out that my motor was working fine, I have no idea why it stopped working, but using your video to trouble shoot was great. Most difficult part of the process was removing the dang covers!

You need a go pro with head or chest mount so you can work with both hands and still record. Good video even one handed. 😃

      Hi Will,
We actually had a meeting about that LOL. We also discussed having a drone follow me on some of these jobs. Who knows where this channel will go but we are having fun justifying all these cinematography toys!
We recently added some stabilization toys including a camera gimble and more audio toys to get better sound. Working on lighting and some focus issues too.
The ultimate would be an augmented VR viewing experience eh'. We are actually looking into that platform...
Thanks for watching... Much more to come!
      Happy Camping,
      Cheers,
      Darren

Darren, please tell me what a reasonable price would be for that exact mobile repair. New motor and install. I realized different motors may have different costs but just a fair cost range. Thank you very much.
