This is nearly exact to the sound on Blues for the Red Sun. This also sounds a lot like the tone on Sky Valley, but with a tiny bit more treble. Good Job!

@@lucaserojas nearly, it was a Tube Works RT2100 head, although he only used that for last Kyuss album and first QOTSA album, although whether he used the RT2100 exclusively for both I’m not sure, as some have said that he used a Sunn Model T on parts of the first QOTSA album

Scott Readers said that they were using standard gauge strings when they started downtuning to C and C#!

You could add something like the Big Muff alternative at a lower setting and you'd be really spot on. I think you nailed the sound. In the early nineties I was playing a ‘78 Les Paul deluxe through a jcm 900. My practice amp was Marshall valvestate into a bass amp. I read Stevie Ray played 13’s which of course I couldn’t find. I did find some 12”s with a wound third. Eventually I settled for power slinkys. I was raised on sabbath and then black flag so when I first heard Josh Homme with kyuss then queens I thought holy shit this guy gets it. I don’t obsess on the exact gear. You nailed the overall sound which I’m sure many like me were sounding like at that time. Thanks
i think josh homme used a lot of ampeg v4 and v4b head.. and his sound is less crushed . if it can help i think if you use a Ampeg 4x10HE ,or E cab turn the tweeter off you should get that sound..the tone of 810 is louder but response of the frequencies is pretty much the same of 810 , the use same speaker eminence legend 810 32ohm.
Awesome video! Glad to see a new video finally up on TH-cam trying to break down the Homme tone. My SG + Catalinbread SFT gets me probably 75% of the tone of Kyuss and early QOTSA, but you'd definitely gotten close. Especially on Green Machine, you've got the scratchiness and high end that I lose with the SFT. On a side note, I'd love to hear you take a stab at some early QOTSA tones (self titled up to SFTD). I'd imagine there's some similarities, but I'm not entirely sure. But especially I'd love to see you take on Spaceship Landing! One of my favorites.

Great video. I have been obsessed with Josh's tone for years. Mostly Rated R and SFTD. Actually owned a beatup Ampeg VT22 that became a money pit, and back killer. I got as close as I could with a Catalinbred SFT boosted with a mid humped EQ and a Bad Monkey OD. Agile LP with custom over wound pickups with Dunlop 12-54 or 11's. Also, dunlop tortex yellow .73mm picks. Referenced a lot of Gregg Ginn (Black Flag) as well. My setup nails it on any clean amp. I boost a little more gain and bass for Kyuss tones. Other than Biasfx I don't do much digital, but you killed it!

My 1st guitar was actually a Las Paul black beauty copy from a company I never h3ard of or seen since called Avila. It weighed a ton, which I liked because it didn't move aroujd when I played it and I actually liked the action and sound better than any Las Paul I ever played, even the ace frehly signature from Gibson. It was an amazing guitar cost me 300 but sadly one of ,y ex girlfriends stole the damn thing from me and moved to God knows where so I'll never see it again. That guitar was a gem.

Great question. The sound of a cab is, I believe, partly due to size and number of speakers. I think only an 8x10 would ultimately be spot on, but I'm sure having the right speakers in a 2x12 would be close.
@@obsessedwithguitars3157 He used an Ampeg V4 cabinet from the 70s (30 watt CTS alnico speakers if I had to guess - they're pretty warm and sound like Fender amps from the 70s), and a Ampeg SS-412ER (75 watt Celestion speakers like a Marshall 1960) from the 80s when he was in Kyuss in the studio. He never recorded with bass cabinets (If you've ever tried- it sounds horrendous). On Blues he used a Marshall JCM900 (EL34M tubes) that Chris Goss convinced him to use, but he switched to a TubeWorks Mosvalve RT2100 on Sky Valley and the ES variant on Circus. Joe Barresi said they used the standard 421 and 57 set-up but they were pretty far off the cab, and the guitars were recorded in a 10ft x 10ft room at Sound City.
I was good friends with Josh back in the kyuss days he even took me on tour in 95 for a month. The craziest thing I saw which took me a while to even process was the pink Floyd cabinets from Pompeii which is one of my favorites video and song . I asked Josh wtf he told me Floyd has so much gear a lot of bands borrow their equipment when they tour so for the 95 tour starting the day after the superbowl that year they played through Floyd's cabinets. Now I could have been so high that this all is some dream but I was there and it was pretty fun and I don't remember most of the tour. Most of the time I was being told what happened the next day hell maybe I'll write a book but there was something sacred and spiritual about it all that I never have and doubt I ever will but boy would it be fun to watch on the big screen. What I love is Josh has explained a lot of things but never told the real story so whatever you think you know you have no idea. If they ever do a final album it could be called the mystery goes on because we were the circus that left town. Oh on that note when we arrived in Europe Josh's ovation was broken and went in for repair so for the first 2 shows he played a fretless Gibson that he just bought and was just getting used to having no frets so it was amazing to see how professional he was . I didn't know that side of Josh as we were pretty close friends but I was not a musician. I remember when they handed his guitar back and as we all entered the venue the crowd was wild and there was a man never mind I can't say but whatever happened menat Josh was having a good night and tour would be grand.

As for mics, I really recommend you get a Blue Yeti for vocal stuff because they're so darn cheap and just plug in via USB. Always happy to talk about this stuff if you want more guidance!

I've spent years searching for how Sons of Kyuss got that guitar sound on Homme's work. There's a few resources I've found for later albums, but never for Sons of Kyuss. Any idea at all what equipment was used for this era specifically? I know that after this earliest period Homme changed things up, but like you said Homme was pretty secretive about his gear. Any ideas at all?
Well, I've never delved into it, I know Homme played a Les Paul early on before the GP based on pictures of super early gigs. As for his studio rig on Sons of Kyuss, I'd have to seriously research it. He talks a little bit about his early gear on the Desert Rock documentary on TH-cam, which is totally worth watching.
Man, I REALLY have to do that. I've been meaning to, but my business picked up a lot and free time isn't what it used to be. I'll do it as soon as I'm able!
Unfortunately it does not work with the line 6 hx stomp :( It is limited to 6 blocks. Funfact, to get this great, awesome sound, I sent the stomp back and bought a line 6 helix LT ;-)

Thanks! Josh did use a couple pedals, such as a Dunlop Crybaby on a few songs off Welcome To Sky Valley and And the Circus Leaves Town (you can hear him go to town on it on One Inch Man). How much his flange and echo sounds were studio sounds that were added in post, I'm not sure. As for the ebony, it doesn't make a HUGE difference, just a very slight brightness. And I do mean slight! But I want to get as super close as I can, and every little bit helps. Plus, I much much prefer the feel of ebony to rosewood and having an ebony fingerboard is usually a good sign that the guitar is overall higher quality. Ebony is much harder, denser, and slicker... and WAY more expensive to harvest!
Do you thinks its possible to achieve this sound with a Orang DT and a PPC112? This is what I own. If I got it right, I need to drive the poweramp tubes most? Are there any pedals like a Fuzz?
As long as you're running the Line 6 Helix, these settings get you that sound. And from what I have heard, modern Orange amps take pedals well. At least my OR50 did, anyway.

The LT is @home. The Preset ist loaded ... and ...not bad ... but i could be better, your video sounds better. I think that has to do with the 3 Impulse Response nodes, that didn´t come with the preset. Can you give me the dowload Links to the RI Files ? it would be Path 1A Node 3 and 6, Path 2A Node 2. Super close dude. Later Kyuss/early qotsa are my tone holy grail. I love blues for the red sun too, maybe more than the later stuff song wise. As far as Josh's tone though, its circus/sky valley and mans ruin eps. It's all mids though dude. Homme is all about mids dude. Neck pup with the tone knob down, an eq with mid hump, super overdrive and either the Marshall or tubemeister head. That's it. I get super close with my Orange Rocker and a TS. Use my LP with Seymour Whole Lotta Humbuckers
He used little to none of the treble frequencies that all other metal guitarists used back in the day and pushed the mids way up, instead of sucking them out like everyone else.
awsome , in my opiinion theres lot of ways to get kyuss sound its not that hard even with regular equipment, when i play it i use big muff and even today playing with diferent settings and eq on line 6 , mostly get close to his sound , rock on :P
Kind of close but not enough gain and volume. Too tight. If you listen to the original Hurricane tone it has more gain, and is spongier. Not so tight and is pushing the limits.

Unfortunately it does not work with the line 6 hx stomp :( It is limited to 6 blocks.
Funfact, to get this great, awesome sound, I sent the stomp back and bought a line 6 helix LT ;-)

Thanks! Josh did use a couple pedals, such as a Dunlop Crybaby on a few songs off Welcome To Sky Valley and And the Circus Leaves Town (you can hear him go to town on it on One Inch Man). How much his flange and echo sounds were studio sounds that were added in post, I'm not sure. As for the ebony, it doesn't make a HUGE difference, just a very slight brightness. And I do mean slight! But I want to get as super close as I can, and every little bit helps. Plus, I much much prefer the feel of ebony to rosewood and having an ebony fingerboard is usually a good sign that the guitar is overall higher quality. Ebony is much harder, denser, and slicker... and WAY more expensive to harvest!

Do you thinks its possible to achieve this sound with a Orang DT and a PPC112? This is what I own. If I got it right, I need to drive the poweramp tubes most? Are there any pedals like a Fuzz?
As long as you're running the Line 6 Helix, these settings get you that sound. And from what I have heard, modern Orange amps take pedals well. At least my OR50 did, anyway.

The LT is @home. The Preset ist loaded ... and ...not bad ... but i could be better, your video sounds better. I think that has to do with the 3 Impulse Response nodes, that didn´t come with the preset.
Can you give me the dowload Links to the RI Files ? it would be Path 1A Node 3 and 6, Path 2A Node 2.
This Impluse Response are not in the Libary at starting point.

Super close dude. Later Kyuss/early qotsa are my tone holy grail. I love blues for the red sun too, maybe more than the later stuff song wise. As far as Josh's tone though, its circus/sky valley and mans ruin eps. It's all mids though dude. Homme is all about mids dude. Neck pup with the tone knob down, an eq with mid hump, super overdrive and either the Marshall or tubemeister head. That's it. I get super close with my Orange Rocker and a TS. Use my LP with Seymour Whole Lotta Humbuckers
Fingerboard shouldn't effect any actual tone...
Also the Eastwood pickup on their GP is based off of the Super2....sooo...
apart from playing most of the songs wrong, the tone isnt bad
He used little to none of the treble frequencies that all other metal guitarists used back in the day and pushed the mids way up, instead of sucking them out like everyone else.

awsome , in my opiinion theres lot of ways to get kyuss sound its not that hard even with regular equipment, when i play it i use big muff and even today playing with diferent settings and eq on line 6 , mostly get close to his sound , rock on :P

Kind of close but not enough gain and volume. Too tight. If you listen to the original Hurricane tone it has more gain, and is spongier. Not so tight and is pushing the limits.
