When bullets hit the top layer, it fragments the bullet to smaller pieces and then Kevlar catches these fragments.
Due to Kevlar having a high tensile strength it’s used as protection against small arms as soft body armor, but hard body armor primarily uses metals and ceramics to break a bullet up then kevlar is used as a spall liner. What you said is not wrong but not quite right.

Bruh kevlar is a quite heavy polymer wich is 50 times more durable to an iron plate of the same weight and its used on bulletproof vests indeed . Its quite long past of my course in chem class back in highschool but i think it was made by combining a specific acid with an amine
