  • In this video I build an aquarium cooling lid to help keep my axolotls aquarium cool during the summer heat!
    here are the fans I used: amzn.to/39wwPhj
    after testing this lid keeps the aquarium 7 degrees cooler, on average, than room temperature using solely evaporative cooling.

      The polycarbonate sheet you can purchase at home Depot or Lowe's, The jigsaw used a fine tooth blade and you have to take your time to avoid cracking it, The fans are linked in the video description, I used the inkbird thermostatic controller that can be used for heating or cooling

    Love the solution - I keep thinking of axolotls sometime... But keeping them cool has been a slight deterrent for me. Where did you get the super clear polycarbonate like that?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get it at Lowe's or homedepot or almost any hardware store

      Ice will say though mine currently sits between 65 or 67 degrees and I only have to swap out three ice bottles a day I do not put the bottles in the tank directly I run 100 ft of air line through a cooler plugged into a powerhead with a sponge filter on the end of it to slow it down the cooler was 13 bucks the airline I purchased was four rolls of refrigerator hose from Home Depot at 25 ft a piece $3.17 per roll one Airline splits into two Airlines and then bottlenecks back into one Airline all the excess Airline is rolled up in a igloo Laguna 99 Court lunch size cooler my next project is a new tank itself I will be lying it with anywhere from three quarters of an inch to an inch and a half maybe 2 in thick of Styrofoam concrete and Drylok and doing a 3D background with it no substrate it'll be a 30-gallon tank the floor two side walls and back will be styrofoam false Rock this way the tank is insulated from the inside like a cooler only missing the two corners for the Hamburg Matten filters the front and now that I've seen this I might even do a styrofoam lid with two fans built-in with a feeding hole that would be removable obviously

    How well did this project do at keeping the water cool?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Works very well, I keep my temperature set at 67 year round, Even when temperatures outside climb in the summer The fans still keep the tank at 67.

    I have sharp ribbed newts that have to be kept cool ..... wish there was somewhere I could buy a lid like this.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On Amazon they also sell fans that you can clip on to your aquarium that essentially do the same thing, I chose to build the lid like this because it was the same price as one of the clip-on fans

      I’ve got the fans, as I use them on my other tanks. If I used them on this particular tank I’d have to lift the lid to attach them and I don’t want my newts to climb out, as they’re semi aquatic and great little climbers.

      Ah I understand now, I could never find a lid like this which is why I decided to make one and make the video!

      It’s a brilliant video. My ‘tools’ comprise of a tiny hacksaw 😂 I have managed to make my own DIY electric gravel vac and water change system. I can’t use a python as I have the old style sink taps.

      Ah I got ya, my non sink python is a 800 gph pond pump with some hose on it 😆
