@@saileenaway6457 The part where Bojack is about to go through the door, and Herb says "oh no Bojack, there is nothing after this" but really its the whole episode. I knew where it was going for hours and I knew approximately where it was leading. I started feeling at least a little anxious when they first started showing the leaky ceiling.
The View From Halfway Down is my favorite tv show episode ever, it gives me chills every time I watch it.

I never wanted to watch this show but when I did I fell in love with it, it's so good! The intro and outro music is great, everything is great about it
There are only few shows that are like this. Most shows end up being shit in later seasons, But Shows like Bojack and Breaking Bad are better as series go.
I was genuinely afraid to watch the last 4 episodes. That's how powerful this show is.
i took a weeklong break to compose myself to watch the last two episodes. nothing would prepare me for the view from halfway down
same experience. it was mentally exhausting and I had to take a break after binging 3 seasons straight. it was making me feel a certain way and i couldn't handle it with my exams going on. season 4-6 were something else entirely.

Bojack Hits you according to how you are emotionally at the moment, is not a sad show, it's a human show, it doesn't romanticize deppression or any of the issues it deals with but rather treats it as it is, a real issue. It's not depressing it deals with depression, it is about maturing and recognizing when something is wrong and what happens when you decide to not do anything about it, you are supposed to get help if you feel you need it, or you end up hurting yourself and everyone around you.
I found the show very therapeutic, but topics it touches and character will be received widely different person to person based on our own moods, experiences, and mind sets.
I tried to get help and they asked for money. Part of my problems is that I don't have money due to abusive stuff. So I'll never get help and things are gonna turn worse and worse with time. It's not my fault though. It's the world's.

Truth- I rewatch this show regularly and it affects me differently depending on my mental state. It might even be best enjoyed when I’m in the depths of severe depression. I can’t recommend it highly enough, but appreciating it requires sticking with it to see past some surface level silliness in the earlier episodes. I just tell people to start on episode 8 (The Telescope) because that’s when the show starts to really find its feet without too much loss of context

One day you can get away from the abusive stuff like I did, and then it's up to people like us to go forward, or keep cursing the world and feeling like it's too late. I understand the feelings, I understand when you get older you feel like you missed your chance to get better. But it's never too late. We can all get better, some of us just have to work harder for it, and whether that's fair or not, it's the truth. Do what you can now, and do what you can as life changes. Don't give in or you will certainly be right about never changing or getting help.

Todd's asexually was planned from the start right. His first conversation in the show was this:
Bojack: "We are not roommates, you are my houseguest"
Todd: "Well we don't need to put labels on things".
He didn't know how he should label himself from the very beginning, he didn't want the usual label.
Ok that is quite the clever line from the writers.

@@ZxanderrR Even Emily (that’s her name right?) is showed in a flashback in season 1, even though she doesn’t make an appearance in the show until later seasons. His asexuality was definitely planned from the beginning and one of the best asexual representation in tv in a while.

Sometimes it's not a matter of will power. Severe mental illness will render you incapable of the simplest of tasks. It doesn't matter how "motivated" you are, you just can't. People who don't understand this will call you lazy and belittle you for it. It hurts. I know nobody asked but I just thought someone would read this and understand that's it's not as easy as people think.

@@stupiddumbass489 I definitely see where you’re coming from and understand this as someone who struggles with depression and anxiety myself. But I think what this quote means is that if you are able to get through these episodes, it gets easier with time to understand and manage it if you put in the work (therapy, taking care of your health, building a life worth living, etc) and medication necessary, as well as observe your triggers and what can give you clarity in even a bad depressive episode. The quote isn’t meant to invalidate the struggle of a depressive episode because those are, like you put, painful and it’s hard to do anything in the moment; it’s meant to shine light on the fact that dealing with mental health issues, toxic traits that come from mental illness, and past trauma can become easier with years of healthy practices and perspective

This is my favorite show EVER. The moment it hooked me was when PC’s phone said “you are forty”. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just your standard irreverent adult animated show.

My moment was when he wasn't forgiven. His friend still hated him even at the end. Even the so called grittiest realest shows don't do that. Or they do the opposite and EVERYTHING is tragic and evil. And that's just not relatable.

I think the moment Herb said "So what you're saying is. You're sorry. Okay. I don't forgive you." is what caught my attention. That "Oh...this show is more than I thought." moment I think every viewer of the show has at some point. I've dealt with abusive family. It's absurd how many times people that were never abused try to push the whole "You should forgive them if they say sorry. It's the right thing to do." Even stomaching a few said apologies that I knew weren't real. Just to avoid more drama. The whole not forgiving an abuser thing never even crossed my mind as an actual valid option. So that bit in the telescope episode almost felt freeing in a way. I don't mean freeing like "Oh Bojack did a shitty thing, that makes my shitty behavior okay." No not that. I know Bojack wasn't an abusive parental figure to Herb. But that whole scene just caught me way off guard but in a good way. A moment in a show about a talking horse got me to go back to therapy and find a healthy way to deal with this trauma. Finding a healthy way to have a mindset similar to Herb's in that scene. It's done wonders. Bojack is a depressing show but it's done so much good for a lot of people. And I'm still so glad I gave the show a shot.
I felt a similar way. Seeing that scene really made me resonate with the show and helped me feel better. I had an extremely toxic and borderline narcissistic friend, who treated me like garbage. I stopped being friends with her, and while still feeling like garbage about it I watched Bojack Horseman. Now when Bojack went to appologise I felt myself dreading Herbs response, dreading that Herb would forgive him like any other show would. But once he said "I don't forgive you" I was shocked. It was something I said to her often near the end of our friendship, because she never changed no matter how many times I forgave her for the same things. And seeing it be completely justified, seeing Bojack be in the wrong for this, made me feel so much more at ease. I was still worried that Herb would forgive him eventually but when Bojack says that Herb never forgave him, even until his death, I felt so much better. Even after all those years, Herb didn't forgive him, because he didn't have to. Something I was struggling with since I was made to feel like I was evil for refusing to forgive her yet (I said I would forgive her if she changed) and I felt so guilty for saying it. As simple as it is, you don't have to accept an appology just because they gave you one. It's something I really appreciate the show for.
Even at 30 years old, the show taught me valuable things about relationships. Not what I was expecting when I watched the first episode. It's only towards the end of the first season that I realized what kind of show it was and I was in for the ride.

I realize this is a year late, but I still want to say, Congratulations. Growing up in an abusive family is fucking horrific. Most people have no idea what it's like to constantly have to explain and validate your existence every moment of every day of your life. I'm really glad that you pushed on and found your inner strength.

I LOVE bojack horseman. It’s depiction of depression is extremely accurate and it’s dark comedy is top notch
The depiction of Bojack's mother going through dimentia and the long speech that Bojack did for her at the wrong funeral was just so powerful. After rewatching it a secind time its still one of my favorite moments in the whole show.
As someone with depression, ADHD, and anxiety. I’ve never seen a better portrayal of several different mental illnesses. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously and that’s what makes it so beautiful. The way the highs in the show feel overshadowed by the sadness of the lows is exactly how life feels with depression. Despite having animal Characters and being physically far from reality, it’s emotionally the closest thing to the real world.
Same for me. I felt personally judged by many characters actions and motivations in so many scenes. But the show shows us WHY. It doesn't just do it for laughs / emotional effect. It explores and humanises it, which is ironic, given that the characters are literally not human.

I work behind the scenes in a lot of tv media and holy shit can I say, the depiction of the people in Horsin around and just the show in general when you see the whole thing is so accurate this is how lots of actors, even child actors, behave off camera. It was so cool to see

I rather think of the species as a symbol, or possibly a shorthand for the character. Instead of providing characterisation by backstory, the creators simply provided an animal stereotype (kind like in a fable) and brought everyone up to speed.

Well Princess Carolyn is a cat, but she is an overworker and cats like to sleep a lot so they're probably just random animals.
Daky- cats while being portrayed as, well, princesses, they also are labeled as independent a lot. She wants to “have it all” like a princess, but because she came from nothing has tap into the more “feral” hunter type to get to the “have it all” princess house cat life. If that makes sense 🤭
wish you didnt brush over dianes character so much, especially the fact that her character is the closest to bojack's out of all of them! theyre both just depressed and use people the same way !

A sad fact of life that this show mercilessly hammers in is that some people are raised "To be happy" and others "to be sad". As I talked about this show with a friend, comparing Mr. Peanutbutter with Bojack, we came to the conclusion that Bojack's basal state is "misery", and there's nothing they can do about it. Meanwhile Mr. Peanutbutter's is "happiness". This means that while good things might cheer Bojack up temporarily, he will inevitably revert to his base state of feeling bad about himself. While for Mr. P, unless something is going actively wrong he's happy by default. On a superficial level this is comparison of how your outlook on life can be all the difference in the world but we're shown how both these mentalities are rooted in the circumstances of their childhood. This is a psychobiological fact of how the brain develops since we're little and it permanently rigs us for either success or failure. And the show makes a brilliant work of demonstrating all of which I talked about above.

Not gonna lie, half of my enjoyment from Bojack Horseman analyses comes from people talking about asexuality and remembering that I do indeed exist. Other half is finding amazing new creators.
You should have your hormones checked. You probably are asexual but I’d check them just in case. My friend thought he was asexual until he learned he had low testosterone. They gave him replacement therapy and he wasn’t asexual anymore. Best of luck to you :).

I understand that some people do incorrectly label themselves based off hormonal deficiencies, but that's a very small amount of people and potentially offensive to tell a stranger. You dont need media representation for your validation. Good friends and/or family that accept you for who you are, are enough. In your case there is no social pressure on you. Nobody cares that you are asexual, you are not discriminated and not disadvantaged ìn society. If you are offended by a stranger asking/suggesting you if you checked your hormones because your human body is not functioning correctly in a friendly manner, that's on you.
The point of Bojack's relation to the "lovable bastard" archetype is that... none of them are lovable.
They're just good at saying what they need to say so people keep enabling their bastard side.
The moment the show got really meta was when they were filming Philbert and Diane was frustrated that the audience loved Philbert so much and found him "relatable". When she said (something along the lines of) "he's not supposed to be relatable and excuse this kind of behavior, he's supposed to be terrible!" it was like a glaring PSA from the writers that we're not supposed to "love" Bojack or excuse his behavior just because we know his backstory, we're supposed to be critical of him and learn from his mistakes. After the stuff that went down with Penny at her prom, I almost didn't keep watching the show because I was so disgusted. I'm glad I did because the writers made it clear that what he did was not okay, and although Hollywood enabled that behavior for years it is still morally reprehensible and Bojack needs to learn and grow outside of the spotlight in order to figure out how to atone and find fulfillment in life. I loved season 6 even though it was really hard to watch
Free Churro and Fish Out of Water are brilliant episodes. I agree that this show is Netflix's best show, and you have inspired me to rewatch the entire show.

Ugh, I just finished watching Bojack, and it's still swimming in my awareness. It's such a thoughtful, raw, fearless show. It's more human than any other show I've seen ever.

I have a hard time getting hooked on series and I tried then abandoned BoJack a couple of times. You convinced me to keep trying, thank you :) I'm asexual so of course I knew about *that part of the show*, and it already made me want to love the series. I think I needed more analysis so this is perfect.
I've met a few people who said BoJack didn't hook them quickly enough, it probably wouldn't have hooked me but I wasn't bored enough to binge it, I think the episode that got my attention was when he got into an altercation with the Navy Seal seal, and when he went on TV to apologize BoJack did a little tirade about how serving in the military shouldn't automatically make you a hero, that's the moment where it clicked and I thought "okay, this is trying to do something different". But yeah, glad I could convince you to try again, I'm sure you'll love it!

I rewatched this show 5 times, watched videos about the show about maybe 10 times the length of the whole series and still can’t get enough. Gets better every time, hits harder every time. Just has such a special place in my heart.

@@tiagotemudo5303 maybe. But I think it was a really good way to go, almost every show screw it by the end. They just kept getting better each season...thats why its so hard to understand they just ended...and it was a good ending. It didnt feel forced, I think it was really organic.

one of bojack's biggest problems is that he treats goodness as a means to be loved rather than the belief that each individual person deserves to be treated well based on their own inherent worth. he never learns to see anyone beyond what they can do for him, including make him feel worthy and cared for

I know everyone raves on and on about this show but I wonder how anyone can finish it. As someone who has been traumatized by mental illness and its causes, this was like a horror movie. I walked into it after watching every office, community and b99 too, but instead of an escape I was triggered beyond belief. Must mean it's some pretty damn good writing.
Because it throws your trauma in your face. I wasn't able to watch some of the scenes until a couple years later, once I had confronted some issues in my personal life
I relate to you. In more ways than you might imagine. This show was a rough ride... But... It was worth it. There is a lot of introspection to be had, when facing one's demons. It might be uncomfortable but life won't pull any punches. This is why you shouldn't seek comfort, necessarily, though it is useful. Escape is only good when it provides respite, but it isn't constructive. To be better, to get better, you will need to find that which you hate within yourself and face it. Eventually you'll fight it. Eventually, you'll lose. Eventually, you'll learn to forgive and to do what Bojack was meant to do, to take one step in the right direction, and keep going.
I had to stop watching it for a bit because I couldn’t take how much more depressed it made me, it hit so hard with me being depressed for a decade and the fact that that BoJack was successful and he was still depressed made me feel like no matter what there is no end to this feeling. It’s hard being depressed and watching the show, but I did finish it and I did enjoy it for most part.
It was easy for me even though I’ve attempted suicide a few times and drug abuse, but it did make me think about it and get a little sad sometimes don’t worry though I’m long past that stage I’m my life
I purposefully avoided this show for this exact reason. I knew I wasn’t in a mentally well place to ever watch it, and ended up watching it at my absolute lowest. I suffer from PTSD and bpd, and I will be the first to admit, this was a show I absolutely had to pace. I have generational trauma, episodes like the old sugarman house and free churro were arguably some of the most difficult and painful episodes to watch. I watched it because I appreciated the honest take. Trauma and mental illness completely change a person, they dictate your actions, your personality, and this show not only exposed this, but didn’t shy away from it being as raw and gritty as it really is. I want to rewatch the show, but again, I have to pace myself. I absolutely recommend it, but it isn’t for everybody - and that’s okay.

It is so amusing to me that when BoJack admits he likes Honey Dew Mellon I told myself that he had truly changed.
My favorite part is the funeral speech.
This show hit really hard. I was in high school and I was being bullied and despite how I tried to stay together I felt tired all the time. Something made me check out Bohack Horseman and I watched a few episodes before school each morning (background noise while I made my lunch or packed my bag) and the further I got in the more it resonated with me. I'm at a much healthier place mentally now but I can't deny that this show made me realise things about myself and about the world. Deep things like personal relationships, selfishness, and it provided a very realistic portrayal of depression, that didn't feel stereotyped to me at least. It's not just crying all the time. Sometimes depression is neglecting yourself because you feel like you don't deserve it. It just resonated with me and I can't put why into words entirely
Bojack is the first show I watched that I flew by in about a month or two, the whole 6 seasons, it didn't even feel like a chore due to the insane character development at different times throughout the series, they don't pile it on at once which wasn't even their intention and it worked insanely well, I may be young but I felt this show slightly, many of the things I know I will feel later on and I somehow related to it
There is no words to really say how good this show is, it's no normal watch it have a laugh then go, you get deeply involved straight away and even the sometimes whacky ass humour just... works man
This show is one of my favourites ever snd I hope to rewatch it when I'm older to see what I missed
I would argue that BoJack Horseman isn't the best thing on Netflix, but that's only because Russian Doll exists. Still, it's a fucking contender. Wild to think the second half of the last season came out this year, 2020 has been way too long..
Russian Doll is damn good, although that would be my third favourite, second favourite is Mindhunter. And you're right, it feels like it was a year ago since that second half came out...

Russian doll is beautifully written, I understand why its at the top of your list.
Russian Doll was great but I feel like there were some slight production problems here and there. I’d give Bojack Horseman the slight edge over it. But also, are we just forgetting Breaking Bad, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Maniac, and Avatar?

gotta say i love the character development for Mr. P he really started off simple and seemed like he was just there to be there. As the show went on we saw more of his backstory and more of his ups and down, honestly i loved seeing that.
even though the show didn't make me cry it gave me ways to deal with my sadness in ways that are good instead of bad. This show genuinely helped me.

this whole video was so good, but i especially loved the analysis of princess carolyn. "a couple steps from happiness" is a perfect way to describe how i felt about her character as i watched the show... it's a different and deep sadness to see someone continuously be so close to what they want, but somehow always falling short.
I really enjoy your documentary, and the ending with Bojack collapsing from jogging with someone coming up to let him know that progress with something new can/will be hard but gets easier over time hit me hard.
I have only a few episodes left of Bojack and I’m completely in love with this show. Much like you said I was originally put off by the presumption it was just an “adult cartoon” ie let’s be edgy and gross in the medium of animation to see what we can get away with omg a cartoon deer just said shit isn’t that subversive??? Take THAT disney! And as judgemental as that may sound, I actually don’t hate that such things exist. If people pop on one of those kinds of shows and likes it it’s not because they’re horrible gross people they just wanted a cheap easy laugh and that’s fine- we can all do with that some time.
But when I finally got into the story of Bojack it just had so many moments that hit hard and I can’t stress enough- it said things I needed to hear. Particularly with Wanda, everyone remembers her rose coloured glasses line but to me when she said “I’m sorry life has been hard for you but that doesn’t give you the right to be shitty to me!” That moment felt powerful. I loved that the show could give me damaged characters who do bad things but it was never trying to convince you “character has sad backstory so bad decisions that hurt ppl are ok!” Like I think we’ve seen a lot of anti heroes, unlikeable protagonists or villains with tragic backstories and the narrative is framed to have us side with them. Bojack doesn’t do that. I understand Bojack I can feel sympathetic but when he does something wrong it is framed to be wrong.
Personally, I am a happy go lucky kind of guy but my siblings are loud destructive people who have caused me a lot of damage and as strange as it may be this show helped me in a big way to process them. And now with a few episodes left to go when I compare Bojack’s chaos to my siblings and see myself in near enough everyone else for one reason or another, I find myself wanting to know how his story ends and if he can be okay. I, like the other characters, can move on and do my own thing but I still want to know if the people who seem on a constant self destruct can be okay even if we have to part ways
The Mr Blue song in the last episode made me cry so much but in a good way

Thats kinda the point in my opinion I mean you dont wanna relate to the man who did new Mexico who choked Gina bit in reality you do relate to him I think their target were people who are just in a way regularly depressed and they hit you with s1 and early s2 bojack and you feel less alone and happy that you can really relate to someone someone then they hit you with new Mexico. Then they make you feel guilty so maybe it's a way to tell you not to go this far ya know?

this show brought up a few mental breakdowns cause I related to him more than I like to admit. I never had a show portray something as relatable and as deep as bojack did. I love this show cause it let me know I'm not exactly alone in my thoughts no matter how much it feels like I am
Man this is a great underated video that describes Bojack Horseman perfectly and shows all the characters even better this is my favorite show because it is so depressing it puts you in the moment it makes you feel things I remember watching some of the later episodes of season 6 I was breathing fast and I felt sick because I put my self in these characters and watching them just get thrown around was heart breaking, some of the best things about this show is how real it is and in my opinion the quote that shows this to be true is "sometimes life's a bitch and then keep living" which means at least to me you go through some shit in your life but you have to keep going. This is a great video review of this, possibly the best I've seen considering it's been so well analysed without spoilers. Fitting that the last clip played is the part of the show that hit me the hardest, being the final scene of the second season. Still think about watching that scene for the first time despite it being over four years ago.

this video essay was the best video essay I have ever seen. bojack horseman is an amazing show that you managed to display and honor, and I thank you for that. it was beautiful.
There are many great episodes in this amazing series. Several episodes are so great that they by themselves are some of the greatest examples of storytelling in animated history. Simply an amazing feat by the writers. Escape from L.A., Fish Out of Water and That's Too Much, Man, The View from Halfway Down and Time's Arrow are all great contenders for first place for what I consider storytelling at its finest. But there's one episode that had a deep emotional impact on me; that left a mark at the back of my mind that I find myself revisiting: The Old Sugarman Place.
I know it isn't as well put together and presented as The View from Halfway Down or Fish Out of Water but it deals with memories, abuse, despair, grief, self-deception and destroying the past without healing its wounds. Bojack never managed to deal with his guilt for Sarah Lynn's death. At first, it looks as if he managed to rebuild himself by finishing his grandparent's summer home but he destroys the home instead of handing it over to a new owner or keeping it as family property.
At first, the symbolism is easy to grasp: by destroying the old Sugarman's home he is destroying the past and all its bad memories, allowing himself to move on. The spirit which he explains to Eddie: is that he does not want to be stuck in the past. But the problem I see with this explanation is that ignores several key issues. It wasn't Bojack that renovated the house, it was Eddie. By destroying the home he is also destroying a direct anchor to a simpler time when he was a child (regression) and any good memories attached to the place. Bojack isn't destroying the house because he had an epiphany of wisdom, he retreated from the healing process through rationalization. When Eddie comments on Bojack's sentiment about the past and "Time's arrow marches on" I believe Eddie isn't speaking to his own grief but that he does not believe Bojack is past what landed him in the old Sugarman's home in the first place: Sarah Lynn and the abuse he suffered. Bojack ended his healing prematurely.
The teardown of the home symbolizes that he learnt nothing to last beyond the place as the whole stay was a method to torture himself and indulge in his grief whilst dragging a grieving bystander into his own emotional trauma. A grieving bystander that he hurt by forcing to break his own bargaining to make up for Lorraine's death by not flying. This isn't how you help someone start a healing process, this is how you put an emotionally vulnerable person through the wringer, which can end up making them snap.
The ending scene hits hard. Watching Beatrice as a filly still playing outside the home, alone and holding the doll despite it making it difficult to handle the hoop, symbolizes that old Beatrice is stuck in the past and never was able to move on.
Honestly, this show was such a deep, personal perspective for me on aspects of my life I wish were better. It was a serious rollercoaster of viewing my feelings and some of my experiences played out through someone else. I absolutely loved and hated the show because it was amazing how well it depicted everything and it hit so hard... but I also cannot re-watch it because it simply would be, as someone else said, like masochism of my own making. I got my closure from a show that I couldn't get from my own life, for things I experienced and a show portrayed. It will always be my favorite show, but it will also be the only one I won't watch again.
Thanks for making it well done. Reminded me of what a truly great show it was and I should probably go back and watch again for the fifth time around.

I also grow up in abusive parent,my mom lied to me abt my dad (idk where or who is my dad) my mom abuse me and my younger brother to the point we have trauma and need help, my grandma (where me and younger brother lives now) doesn't even listen to us, she just want us to go abroad and build a career to pay her back, I don't have close friends to talk abt my own trauma, I'm all alone in this fcking world...i regret being born in this position. I'm suffering from anxiety and depression but I just dismissed them to surve...or...idk..that's why I relate to this so much because I know how it feels.
