  • The Innovator's Dilemma by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen. -- Sign up to receive free weekly video book summaries at www.bookvideoclub.com --
The book explains how successful companies that dominate their industries fail in the face of disruptive innovation. It’s a message of caution for leadership teams at these companies, but also a message of encouragement for competitors venturing against these goliaths.
First, we’ll distinguish between sustaining and disruptive innovation. Then, we’ll discuss why it’s difficult for most companies to adopt disruptive technologies. And finally, what does it all mean for both large companies and startups...

I 've never in my life left a comment on a TH-cam video, your video was so good I was compelled to comment. This is the best ever summary video I have come across, and coming from someone who has read the book a multiple times, you've summarized it quite wonderfully. Keep up this great work.

I have asperger's so I would describe myself as naturally very creative. It's more about how you connect with the subject personally, feeling passionate about how some part of it works and connects with embracing yourself for knowing how your different, you know for the same reason you can make a difference.🤯🧠

Nice summary, but you're missing one key element in the definition of a disruptive innovation. A disruptive innovation underperforms in the characteristics of the old innovation, but it has a characteristic in which it outperforms the old innovation. A great example is the laptop in my opinion. The first laptops were shit, they underperformed pc's in everyway, however: they were portable. To refer this to one of your examples Airbnb... Airbnb rooms might underperform regular hotel rooms in comfort/service etc., however Airbnb offers a 'new characteristic', that rooms can be rented out by everyone and not just established hotels.

You made a mistake mentioning UBER as a disruptive company. This company does not meet the requirements for being considered disruptive, it is not a product which has a lower performance as the cabs and the most important thing, it has to go after a lower client segment or a new market niche.
Instead of that, the company goes after the cab's clients, it did not start from one of those segments, therefore, it cannot be considered as a disruptive product.

My problem with academics is that they create straight jacketed criteria and two by two matrices and boiler plate definitions as if this were the norm in society.. anything which changes life and is accepted by people after some initial resistance is disruptive for those who lived comfortably with the old model...

Fear Uncertainty Doubt. Established companies are terrified of the Osborne (computer) effect. Coming out with a new product that will destroy your existing product. Kodak had an early lead in digital photography, but film was a huge cash cow for them. IBM came out with the IBM PC jr. with the chiclets keyboard, that was intentionally bad, but cheaper. Unfortunately, the IBM-compatible was the same price, but the same performance as the IBM PC. Big companies just can't compete against themselves. Little, new companies can compete against big companies.
