I'm from southern US as well, and just recently visited UK for the first time, and I also noticed people from smaller towns in the UK and the northern parts seemed to have similar manners to us southern US folk. It really surprised me, felt like I was back home.

As someone born in and mostly raised in Edinburgh, it’s easy to become blasé and forget just how uniquely beautiful the city is. Watching vids like these reminds me. I fully get why foreigners overwhelmingly speak in high praise of the city and its unique magic (notwithstanding that it has lots of grotty bits, too). Have to disagree with the “price-wise it’s bang-on” bit, though. £11.75 for a bit of basic takeaway street food? £7 would be about right for what you’re getting here. If this weren’t Edinburgh and an outlet in ‘the most photographed street in Scotland’ it probably would be about £7. You’re paying for location, location, location as much as anything else here. In other words, a bit of a tourist-trap rip-off!

Get round the corner to Kebab Mahal in Nicholson Square. 2023 Kebab Takeaway of the year winner, and they have won the Scottish Curry award several times too. Karahi Murgh and Karahi Gohst are delicious 😋
The street your on (Victoria St) is what JK Rowling based Diagon Alley on, hence the Harry Potter stuff. The Cafe she wrote the book in is just round the corner (got fire damaged and closed).

Edinburgh is where she wrote the first few books as an unemployed single mother. it's pretty well documented although it's quite possible that The Shambles was a factor in the design for the movies.

Chanced upon your video and remembered I’d been to Oink years ago on the blog, back in 2012 it seemed after checking, paid £4.60 for my Grunter but still remember it was a decent sandwich and that the crackling was spot on. I had mine with a spread of haggis back then, dunno if they still do that? I had a Beres too in Sheffield, different but liked that too, yeh bread probably better, happy to see oink still going though, nice one
My Lancashire friends always want to go to Bertie's when they visit. They say it's THE best fish and chips in the country. My Bangladeshi friends recently visited and agreed. They do take aways as well as sit ins, so worth a trip some time.

Hope you weren't staying overnight in a hotel. Hotels are insane £££££ in Edinburgh. I live near the English border (Scottish side) and it's cheaper for me to get a taxi home, rather than stay in a hotel when I go out there. EVERYTHING in Edinburgh is now the same cost as London.
That's a real stretch. Everything in Edinburgh is not the same price as London. Particularly food and drink. It's expensive compared to a lot of cities, but London isn't one of them

U are hard-pushed to get a pint for under £6.00 in town centre these days. The Street Bar is where I paid £7.65. City cafe is almost as dear, it's about £5.75 for cooking lager (Tennents) and £6.85 for premium Lager. Scotland's best sandwich is on the island of Arran at the Sandwich Station in Lochranza. I haven't tasted all of the sandwichs in that fair country but I'd put decent money on them being right up there.
If your going back relax & take the train. If your into history, visit the castle. You'll lose a stone walking up the hill but worth it. Don't by water from the asian shop on the right just before the castle. £3-50 a small bottle 4 years ago.

It's similar but the Shambles in York is the closest thing to a real diagon alley
