- Niki Lauda gives his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton’s relationship with teammate Valtteri Bottas, and why the bond is much stronger than Hamilton’s previous partner, Nico Rosberg. Lauda also explains why Mercedes may have to rank its drivers, in order to improve the team’s chances of securing another world championship.

Niki always seemed to be grounded, never pretentious or self possessed. During this interview he always relates to Bensinger like a gentleman without being condescending.
R.I.P. Niki Lauda, you are an inspiration to the way I think & speak. Thinking logically & truthfully. Especially in your days as a formula one driver yourself in both setting up the car & the knowledge of the track. In the end Lauda is the reason I got into cars again. May your racing spirit be alongside James Hunt in the racetrack in the sky.
Niki certainly made it easy to understand why the team makes these hard decisions and choices, but if you sit back and think, it makes complete sense. RIP Niki
Bottas is quick in a car which is set up nice for him and can push Hamilton. Hamilton is the more subliminal driver, quick in any car in any conditions, and the better racer, head and shoulders above all other drivers

Lewis is a fantastic driver, outstanding but we have to remember that he has the dominant car, that has been made around Lewis. You could argue it’s Lewis’s car. Not Botas. Mercedes is the dominant car that’s why he’s won all the world titles. A combination of having the best car on the track and being a great driver
MB Motorsport is lucky to have Niki Lauda being a part of the team, as every successful team has the perfect ingredients to make everything tick. He is direct, fair, observant and insightful
They get alone because there isn't a rivalry that stems from them being 13 years old, one a star child, the other a kid that came from nothing (this is some movie level rivalry)
Also the fact that Bottas is a very good team player and doesn't have as big an ego like Lewis or Nico helps a lot with their relationship
As it turns out the guy with nothing turned out to be one of the best of all time

funkadelicmover1 the next 3 tracks are in the americas.. Ferrari struggled in Asia.. but can it be the other way around.. Mercedes could struggle and be unlucky in the americas.. leaving a solid good battle till the end in Abu Dhabi..
ItzzKingCesar It will need a miracle for Ferrari/Vettel win the WDC even if Ferrari has a stronger package than Mercedes in last few races. They need two dnf from Lewis. Mercedes have been fortunate that Ferrari had problems (mechanical/driver error) because in my opinion they were quicker car race pace wise in Malaysia and Singapore. Mercedes should do well in Austin as it is fast flowing circuit. (Fast corners, long straights, power track) It will be tighter in Mexico, Brazil and Dhabi but the championship could be all done and dusted.

@@williamcrane1355 Nico wasn't really a threat to him at all. Remove bad luck for the pair of them (of which Hamilton suffered more, especially in 2016) and Rosberg was dismantled pretty handily. He overtook Lewis a grand total of one time for the lead, on track, in their years together. An excellent driver, but not Hamilton's equal at all.
Valtteri is a nice guy, competitor but fair. Nico was spoiled.

The relation between lewis and valteri?? Of corse....Vallteri no chasing Lewis champion...Rosberg he did. Course they are friends. For lewis, bottas is no stress. We will see next year if bottas has chances to win the title, the relationship between each other.

Brogan Thomson Red Bull's have been extremely competitive in these last few races. Ricciardo has been able to get on the podium and win a few times this year, and now that Max's reliability issues seem to have stopped for the moment, they're an unstoppable force. Almost caught up to Lewis at Japan. 2017 was a year off to develop the car. 2018 will be their playground.
Thunder Snake if they develop a good car in the off-season they have a good chance, imo it depends on the renault engine. Redbull have a good chasis but they lack a little horse power

I can see what your saying, sabotage or just bad luck perhaps we will never know. Rosberg was lucky to win the title and i think he knows it hence his retirement. Bortas has to be stronger in 2018 but i feel Hamilton is just getting better and better. Vettel screwed it up, great driver but he is his own worst enemy. Max and Danny ones to watch, Alonso dont think he's he stands much chance for the first part of 2018 as for Kimi Raikkonen think he may have lost it hope not
Paul Roberts Both had bad luck once in 2016. Rosberg in Monaco and Hamilton in Sepang. Without their problems Hamilton would have had 25 more points in Sepang and 7 points less in Monaco which is a total amount of 18 points. Rosberg would have had 19 points in Monaco and 3 points less in Sepang which is a total amounts of 16 points. So, without their problems Rosberg would have still been three points ahead of Hamilton
@@Vettel2011 - You are also forgetting that Hamilton had 2 turbo/engine failures during qualifying in both China & Russia (besides have a water cooling problem during the race in Russia - which prevented him from challenging Rosberg)
Hamilton also had to start from the back of the grid in Spa because of the said turbo & engine failures, whereas Nico with a perfectly functioning car was able to start from pole!
Including his engine blowout in Malaysia: Hamilton lost at least 60 points that season due to mechanical or electronic failures, and Rosberg lost NONE!
I dunno where you got the impression that Rosberg had car reliability problems in Monaco?
His ONLY actual problems was not being able to master the wet/changeable conditions!
If Hamilton had enjoyed the same near perfect car reliability as Rosberg did back in 2016, he would have won that WDC by over 60 points, and Rosberg would never have gone on to emulate his father in becoming a World Champion!

There is less friction because they aren’t fighting each other for a Championship, they are fighting Ferrari first. With Rosberg, they only doubt each other, never anyone else.
The difference in the relationship is that BOT doesn't cheat the way Nico Reverseberg did.
Ironic a Ferrari legend is the inspiration and one of the driving forces behind Lewis going to Mercedes.

@@user-rq2mp4dr5l Lewis has had a good relationship with every teammate except Nico - and that includes two champions Fernando and Jenson, who were both competitive at the time. If Hamilton and Rosberg didn't get along, it says more about Nico than it does about Lewis or Valtteri.

Having taken what has been said by those involved and piecing it together, it's clear that Fernando's problem was with Ron Dennis and team strategy. He assumed (incorrectly) that as the reigning champion and experienced driver versus a rookie, he would be the #1 in the team. Ron asserted that it has never been McLaren's policy to have #1/2 drivers and that they were always going to let the drivers race. Fernando couldn't accept that, and after pulling a couple of silly stunts and making some suspect comments, he left by mutual consent at the end of the season. Most people bought into the media hype about the two drivers, but that wasn't the case at all. Lewis and Fernando have always gotten along and had the utmost respect for one another to this day.

Teammates get on when there is no doubt in anyone's mind who the number 1 driver is. Or rather, who the number 2 driver isn't.
At this stage, Mercedes applying team orders is not as big a deal. Valtteri can't win the title. So they throw it all over to Lewis. If team orders _need_ to be applied in the worst circumstance, namely asking V to let L overtake in a 1-2 situation, Mercedes still claim max constructors points. They have a 145 point buffer going into Austin.

Mercedes has no rivals this season, Ferrari is inconsistent, it gets challenged even by the red bulls sometimes and lately the car has become unreliable. Lewis and specially Mercedes are in the top of the World right now, Bottas will probably get 2nd before the last race.

And its simply the faster and better driver who gets more support later in the season... So every Irvine, Barrichello and Bottas got the chance to beat the Goat! If they would they would suddenly be/have been the ones who got the Nr. 1 treatment in the Championship race...
But it again shows what hypocrates most fans are...complaining about driver X or Y having a Nr. 1 status...but if their driver obviously got a Nr. 2 driver by his side - its ok...and they only right thing to do..
Hamilton and Bottas get along because Bottas is clearly comfortable as a No. 2 driver. He knows his place. Cover Lewis back and collect points for the team! Lewis can’t handle competition from his teammate. It’s a bit like Vettel and Raikonen. The only difference is a)that Kimi is a WC and will retire soon and b) Vettel and Raikonnen respect each other. Lewis and Nico didn’t. Bottas has achieved nothing yet other than showing the lack of a spine while sitting in a championship ready car. Like a company like Mercedes would risk constructor WC (including the 40+ million Euro bonus) to keep one of their drivers from winning races. This kind of accusation is insane. Lewis is internationally the bigger name. This means more publicity for Mercedes. By the way: Mercedes is not a German team. They are English with two Austrian managers. Factory and most employees are former Brawn GP. Not a single German in the team. Same goes for the engine. They are build in the former Illmor factory by former Illmor engineers.
