    I am just writing this comment to show my absolute appreciation for this video series you did about Optiplex-es.
    I'm an IT tech, but after having my 2 boys (who are now 6 & 8 years old, and autistic), let's just say that playing video games (or thinking about setting up a basic gaming PC has been out of my mind for a while.
    Now, the only PC we have at home happens to be an Optiplex 3020. Imagine my joy, seeing your videos, showing how it is absolutely possible to turn my PC into a potable gaming build. 🙂
    My aim has always been to emulate PS2 games (maximum) and Minecraft, Fortnite, etc. The kind of games my boys will be thrilled with.
    Thanks to your videos, I removed the hard drive bay, used your template to position my SSD and HDD. Got most of my parts, now waiting on my 500W PSU, an Asus 970 GTX and an i7 4770k to replace my i5 4590 (because I wanted to match the GPU as much as possible).
    Videos like yours are really uncommon and I'm convinced they give a new purpose to lots of people having those Dell computers. 😁

    I really like the optiplex 7010 "DT" (desktop) case. Its combination of a slim (about 2U) form factor and M-ATX motherboard support is extremely rare in today's case market. Its competitiors are mostly "HTPC" cases (like Silverstone ML11) and their build quality is lightyears behind this 10 year old Dell case. Working in it is just so satisfying with Dell's toolless design. You don't need to turn a single screw when removing the side panel, swapping out a 3.5 HDD or adding a pcie card.

  • @physxme
    @physxme ปีที่แล้ว

    I tinkered a bit with the optiplex 7010 DT's front panel connector, and it (mostly) works with a standard motherboard now. You can find pinout diagrams for dell's proprietary connector online. With those I was able to adapt the two front audio jacks and the two front usb 2.0 ports into standard connectors. The only issue is that dell's audio jack "sense" function works differently from modern motherboards and I had to turn off audio jack plugin sense in my motherboard's audio driver utility, which means when you plug in headphones in the front audio jack, the system can't switch to it automatically. Otherwise the usb2.0 and audio ports all work normally with my Gigabyte B450 motherboard.
    While Dell's front usb3.0 connector have the same number of pins as normal usb3.0 connectors do, it appears to have an exotic locking pin which will probably tear up the motherboard usb3 socket if you force it in. I don't want to drill or cut either the connector or my motherboard socket. So I ordered some 90 degree usb3 connector adaptor online and planned to try drill on those so they could fit Dell's exotic locking pin. Those haven't arrived yet.

    If anyone is still interested in this project (Dell Optiplex 9020)
    An I7 4790k does work (probably can't overclock it though but the base and turbo boost clock speeds, 4ghz-4.4ghz respectively is pretty decent)
    The MSI and Palit storm x rtx 2060 should be able to fit in without the hdd cage removal mod (although I have removed the HDD cage)

    I’ve said this already. I’m piecing together a super budget build. You can get a 3020 Mobo for 20 bucks, $50-100 case, I found cheap 16g Corsair Vengeance DDR3 locally $35. 450w psu $35. Gtx 970 $50. Xeon E3 1240v3. This is mainly just for World of Warcraft, so I don’t need much Gpu power, but this build would easily be upgraded with a motherboard swap and processor upgrades down the line. The after Christmas used market is fantastic right now.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Save for the GPU market. It's pretty bad right now. It hasn't hit the 900 series as hard. But man, for get getting a 1060 right now.

    question: what is the oldest optiplex you may recommend? is it still the 4th gen? are there any other office pc brands that are comparable to optiplex?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 7010/9010 with an i7 3770 is the absolute oldest I suggest at this point for a gaming PC that's playing anything somewhat recent. Anything older, and I would consider that going the way of a retro gaming PC. MIght still be fine for some games like Dota and CS Go with the right GPU paring. Ideally though, I suggest the xx20 models with an i7. I wouldn't suggest any of the quad core i5's at this point for anything other than a general use PC.

    Welcome back ! Btw I'm planning to upgrade my Optiplex very soon so my decision is over. I'll get 2TB HDD for data, 120GB SSD for Windows, I'll keep my CPU, my power supply will be a 500W or greater and a GTX 970 or RX 580 8GB. I hope my upgrades are good. So merry Lockdown and a happy new year !

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, 120GB should be fine for most people for the O/S drive, and a hard drive will only effect load times and 2TB can hold a lot of games, so long as they're not Modern Warfare sized games.

  • @monovengclan
    @monovengclan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    good to see you back. I hope you'll get better soon. in general I feel optiplexes are a good thing for people who live in countries were there is not much pc gaming hardware as I do. with 4 cores becoming obsolete, I feel like it's really budget AAA gaming that is going away.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe... maybe not. I've heard that sentiment a lot lately, since the release of CP 2077. It all depends, is CP an anomaly, of is it a trend? There's a lot of arguing that it's simply demanding vs. unoptimized, and I think it's a little of both. I've heard that it's severely broken at it core. So, time will tell, but I think it's too soon to call the budget AAA gaming scene.

    I got two of these MT Dell Optiplex 9020's. They work great. I'm not needing to game play at extremes, so upgrading the GPU, and PSU is really all I feel I need to do. However, the PSU needs to be addressed as to which PSU will fit. Not all PSU's like not all GPU's are all the same size. Or at least I found when I went upgrade mine. Great channel and thanks for the leg work. You do it well.

    Ive said this before on another vid, but the HP Z230 is a good step up for gamers from these optiplex units. I've got an almost 13inch 3 fan Gigabyte GTX 970 in mine with zero mods required. It came stock with a 400w psu that feeds the 970 which can peak at roughly 240-250w from the GPU alone, something no stock optiplex could ever hope to do. Note the z230 only comes with one 6pin so you may need a dual sata to 6pin to feed really power hungry cards like mine.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I'm really liking the Z series. I finally got my hands on one and it was the same price as the equivalent Opti, and with the 240/440 coming down in price, I have to recommend those before the, even more constricting, Opti xx40 series.

    Here's the path I took since I was gifted an Optiplex 9020 i7 4790 (non k) 3 years ago. I've been using it stock since I had it for a home work station but decided recently to build my own pc since the new AMD product came out. I bought my psu, fans (rgb for my fps), case, 65 gaming Ducky keyboard, and b550 MB. Then covid hit and I a really patient person since I game exclusively on console (so does all my friends). I did however catch the build bug and started digging since I figured I won't be able to build my "new' AMD pc for a while and my son just recently took up and interest in building pc's so here's what I did: Purchased a used msi Z97 mb, 16 gb of ram (at 32gb already, and before I started my AMD build years ago) and decided to throw everything into the case rgb fans and all for the AMD system I paln to build when the world returns to sanity.
    Here's what I have:z97 mb matx, 32gb of ddr3 ram 1600, ssd 128 (OS), 500 hdd storage, New case DLM21 mesh with rgb fans, Corsair psu 600w mod. Here's my dilemma, what gpu should I buy? I was strongly considering a rx 580 as I don't plan on using this as a gaming pc with plans on my AMD build.
    Also: The used z97 board I bought came with a i3 4170 and 8 gb of ram I plan on letting my son build his own pc just to play around with and learn so bought him a used mb but conflicted on the gpu. I was thinking a 1050ti.
    Sorry for the book lol but I'd appreciate the feedback from you or anyone in the comment section.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I say if you're not looking for something high end, it's hard to argue with an RX 470/570 4GB. They're the best value right now as you can find them under $100. RX 580's are way too expensive considering their level of performance right now. And I'd go with that over the 1050 Ti as well since you'll pay more for the same amount of VRAM and a slower GPU.

    I have a dell optiplex 9020 with an i5 4590. Just a bit unsure if I should buy a new PSU for my 570 I have on hand. does the 8 pin to sata cable work with the 570? and with the 570 and the components go above the 290 watts on the stock psu. (btw I have an 80+ bronze stock psu rated at 290 watts) if you could answer this question that would be great. Thanks!

In addition to that I use a Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB, 450 W powers supply, Micron 8JTF51264AZ-1G6E1 4x4GB RAM, Kingston A400 240GB SSD, Intel Raid 1 Volume 500GB HD (used for storing photos) and stock cooling (while I mostly operate with the side cover removed). It’s pretty cool this channel exists. I came b/c I’m upgrading my dad’s old *Lenovo H430 Core i3-2130 3.4 GHz w/4GB* (2 core w/ hyperthreading) to a *T1700 4790 16GB RAM* which I got off eBay for $270 including shipping. My dad doesn’t do anything besides surfing the web and watching the occasional TH-cam videos. We already upgraded the7200 RPM 1TB HDD in the Lenovo to a brand new Samsung 870 EVO 1TB SSD, and by itself that made a hell of an improvement. But after I went back home and looked up the specs on that Lenovo, I felt bad for talking my dad into spending $140 on it, haha. So I’m getting him him this T1700 for Father’s Day. This old T1700 comes stock with a Sapphire R7 240 which pretty much everyone says is absolute shite. But like I said, this rig isn’t intended for gaming. Of course, I’m gonna slap that 1TB Samsung we just put into the Lenovo into this box. It’s kinda funny how a used 1050 TI is about what I paid for the whole computer. haha. For this T1700, I could see maybe slipping in a GTX 750 TI w/GB for about $140. Even though you upgrade the RAM to 32 GB for about $115, I’m pretty sure my dad would never need more than 16 GB. I guess if I upgraded the video card, I’d probably go ahead and upgrade the PSU to a Corsair 650W.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly because they're not as flexible as an OptiPlex. You can't replace the power supply with off the shelf components. They're more complex. Just navigating the CPU upgrade options for socket 2011 is going to be rather confusing for the average person. Not to say I wouldn't consider working with one, but $120 is a pretty good deal. Still seem to be going over $200 on eBay, and I'll never find one locally. My local market is pretty trash unfortunately.

    Hi how tedious was the process for sleeping your 24 to 8 pin power connector. Also would you ship one out if i would pay?

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adapter... not very, but I've done some incredibly tedious sleeve jobs. For a first timer, it could be a little tedious, but not too bad. There's certainly a learning curve to sleeving cables, and that can vary on the materials you use as well as your tools. As for making one, cost would depend on what I would have to buy. I don't sleeve for other people. I only sleeve my own cables, so it's not like I have all the materials I'd need to do it right now. I made that one with scraps.
      However, there's some I can suggest that does this professionally for other people and his work is top notch. Plus, he'll get you your cable in a timely manner. He typically does full PSU cable sets, so I'm not sure if this is something he'd take on, but he's who I'd recommend. His name is Michael Braaten and he runs MB Sleeving.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, and no. It really depends on the game and the settings. It also matters what you have running in the background and if you're playing online or not. I have a video testing out several GPU's with the 2nd gen and I saw the 2500 be a slight bottleneck is some situations with the 570. Keep in mine that my testing was done on a clean install with nothing running in the background.

      Thanks! I guess it all depends on where you want to be. Right now is a bad time to buy a GPU. The used market is pretty bad. At least here in the U.S. so it might be better in Bangladesh. The 4GB RX 470/570 is hard to beat at the entry level, and if it's not much more, the 8GB. Same goes for the 480/580. However, keep an eye on the 1070 and 1660 Super. If they're close in price, they'd be better than the 480/580. For anyone of these cards, a 500 watt would be adequate, and the 160 Super can run off the stock power supply. I like the EVGA BQ series on the budget end, or the Corsair CXm models.
      I hope that helps.

    I have enough money to buy

    I have to mainly used for gaming and game streaming, for gamez like
    GTA V
    Warzone
    PUBG
    Apex Legends
    Fortnite

    My question is will this build will be good enough to drive me this way with gameplay along with streaming.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Playing those games? Yes. Gaming and streaming? Nope. You'd need at least an i7 for that. Or an nVidia GPU that could encode the stream to take the load off the CPU. But there's nothing reasonably priced from nVidia that's up to the task right now. My suggestion would be an i7 4790, at the very least. If OptiPlex systems are running to expensive, try branching out and look at the HP Z230, or even the Z240 with an i7 6700.

    Oh, and I hope you feel better man.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I appreciate that.
      Well, if you've got a 7020, you can't install a 6600K in it. You can only install the 4th hen Haswell CPU's in the xx20 models. You'd probably pay about as much for a 6600K as it would be to get an i7 4790 which will drop right in, you'll just have to enable hyperthreading in the BIOS. I would suggest that over even a 6th or 7th gen i5. Games are just using more and more cores and the four extra threads really helps going forward. As for the GT 1030... depends on the game. Some, you outright won't be able to do it. Some will require serious compromises. I would suggest something like the RX 460/560 over the 1030. You could even get something like the XFX RX 470 4GB or Asus Strix RX 470 4GB for under $100 that will run on the stock power supply and easily manage over 60 FPS in most games with some compromises here and there.

    • @TheGameBench
      @TheGameBench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trza49er The 45xx and 46xx i5's are still pretty good. Just depends on the game since there are newer AAA titles out there that just aren't happy on quad cores regardless, and it doesn't matter what GPU you put on them. But that's a pretty small percentage of games right now. And the 470 is the best value in entry level right now. And they perform a lot better than most people think. Costs less than a 1050 Ti, and it's faster. And if you go with something like the XFX 4GB model, you can easily run it on the stock power supply. The Asus Strix model looks like it would be good to go on the stock PSU as well.

You could try booting the system with the card installed and using the onboard video for signal, and try flashing the proper BIOS on. As a lost resort you could try reflowing the solder. Interesting... the T1700 shouldn't have that issue with any dual slot GPU. The Dual must be a little thicker than two slots. Thankfully, the solution is pretty simple. Just use some low profile cables. There are some 90 degree SATA cables you could use, but you'd have to get a left/right angle so you could use both ports. Also, most 90 degree SATA cables are tall... so it's a crap shoot if they'll be short enough. Silverstone makes some low profile cables that work perfectly, but they're a little spendy as far as SATA cables go. For the USB3 header there are some low profile cables as well.

So, your best option is really the i7 2600. I've heard people get the 2700K to work with mixed results, some say they couldn't get it to work. If you do some research you'll find that 3rd Gen (Ivy Bridge) could work in 2nd Gen boards, and that is true, but they won't work in the x90 OptiPlex models because Dell never released a BIOS to make them work... unfortunately. There are also desktop Xeon models that are even faster than the 2nd Gen i7 models that will work, but they're incredibly expensive and would make no sense when you can buy an i3 10100 for about $70 these days on the used market and it's SUBSTANTIALLY faster than anything from the 2nd Generation.
