    Sherwin Williams Midsouth. I like to use an 18" Colossus roller whenever possible; less likely to have roller lines, covers larger area for less neck strain. Keep lots of paint on the roller.

    Dear Mr. Vancouver Carpenter,
    I don't sleep well and am an amateur drywall finisher who's now realizing that painting is part of the job. lol Anyway since i don't ever sleep I just sit down, smoke a bowl, and watch your videos like watching a netflix docuseries and I really wish more people knew about you. You're a great time, very helpful and hilarious. Maybe I'm just high but you crack me tf up. Thank you for making me a better drywaller and for making me laugh very often.
    Edit: 12 minutes in and I'm literally crying.

    Hey bro, great videos! As a painter I have a comment: you shouldn’t have that diffuse O light, you should have a utility light, a conventional yellow halogen or a rechargeable work light. It would help you see the wet from the dry paint, and the sheen or marks. For painting ceilings a mental map is also good to keep in mind like you said. Thanks again for all the tips!
    A little caulk and some paint make the carpenter what he ain’t!

    I usually avoid specific ceiling paint in favour of higher quality flat wall paint, as the coverage (especially when untinted) is better. I usually do cut in, but not always. If not I quickly dab the inside corners first. I tend to over do it on the back rolling too as I hate dealing with misses. To ease my neck, I sometimes look down at the floor as I do my first pass that just puts the paint on the surface. It doesn’t matter if you do that blind because you’re gonna spread it and smooth it on your two back roll passes. I also do a much wider swath (5-6 feet) so I could do the bulk of a room like that in three swaths.
    Sometimes I will roll my second coat perpendicular to the first so that I won’t have lap marks in the same places, but that’s only when I’m using something shinier than flat.
    Love the channel and your dry Canadian wit.

      I get my ceiling paint from a local independent producer, in "Velvet", which is even flatter than "flat". The only sheen more flat is "studio".

    • @Justchuck69
      @Justchuck69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He had crud in his paint and you want to get that off before back rolling so he had to keep his eyes on the ceiling ( either that or he just likes complaining on his videos :-) ) !

    Brush inside corners. Whizz roller for cut-in. Smooth ceilings half inch nap. Textured ceilings three-quarter inch nap. Three-eighths nap isn't enough and It'll take forever for the same results. Polyester blend roller naps are trash. Spend an extra six or eight bucks and you'll thank me later. High-end custom home painter for 38 years.

    I like to use the Benjamin Moore Regal Select Flat for the ceilings, its just my preference and its something that my dad always used as well, there's really no splatter and the finish comes out great. While I know that buying the paint in five gallon buckets is cheaper than buying it in gallons, I prefer the gallons because they are made of metal and in the five gallon plastic buckets you tend to get more pealing paint along the sides of the bucket

    • @Eddie_freeflow504
      @Eddie_freeflow504 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what we use at our hotel best paint ever but we use 5g buckets but we use it so much I usually see the trash at the bottom of the bucket within a few days of painting.

    Yooo!! Love the videos keep em coming! Instead of mashing a 9” roller into the corners maybe try a mini roller or whiz roller. I use a 4” ppg branded roller skin. Makes for less mess and still gives same speed in the process. Also get rid of those paint pans, 5 gal bucket and a paint grid for 9” set ups. You’ll speed up your process that way. If I’m running flat ceilings, I’m using PPG 6-70. Covers very well and doesn’t spit back at your face as bad as most other paints.

    OBSERVATIONS (from a guy who's watched many paint vids on TH-cam): 1.) You didn't de-lint your roller with tape to avoid the boogers. 2.) Since you don't like to cut-in with a brush, you should have used Corner+ brand rollers (as shown by Idaho Painter) that has nap on the side so it saturates the corners better 3.) You should always paint towards the window where the most light comes in in order to hide lap lines better...I don't know if you take that into account when painting a room.

    😂 "ugh, my neck." I realize this is an older vid and you likely won't see this comment, but I had to take the time to THANK you--and your sense of humour--for keeping me sane while I restore my Mother-in-law's 1912 half lath and plaster/ half drywall previous home-owner DIYer slap-up repair job in the dining room (I encountered more than my fair share of caked on boogers, cracks/bubbles, and 20 yr old frog tape painted into the trim... Zinsser Bin has rescued me on several occasions in addition to many other tips thanks to other vids of yours. Incidentally, she chose scarlet orange to refresh the previous chalk-white ceiling and mint green walls, and cream over the banged up mahogany red varnished trim boards of which there were approx 20 vertically nailed in wainscotting-esque fashion. Used Sherwin-Williams Emerald (with a good sealing primer and x2 coats), lots of wood putty on the trim (super fun to sand down that when you miss the window to carve off the excess), took my time, and uttered expletives previously unknown to me. After 14 days straight it's actually stunning...in a good way. Wish I could post pics here. Thanks again for creating this channel to walk people through pitfalls BEFORE they happen, as well as how to fix previous mistakes. You're a godsend. P.S. you are not alone in your neck pain and I watched the entire vid.

    Been painting since 1974, I think you’re doing a real good job for a carpenter and considering doing it with a 10 mil! You’re doing pretty much everything right. Although cutting in a room like this wouldn’t take so long. Sometime you have to cut it in if the previous painter has painted the wall paint on that first little part of the ceiling. And you are right about not looking back, that’s the worst mistake! Oh high!!!LOL Still here. Love your plastering videos, I looked you up when I was looking for tips on but joints. And I found out that I pretty much do it the same way you do. Enjoy all of your videos, keep them comming. Their are so many useless flybynighters out there! You’re definelty not one of them. I agree with keeping a wet edge and avoiding letting the cut in dry but with flat white on ceilings even if the cut in dries and then you roll just getting close to the edge, you can't see a difference. With eggshell or semi gloss paint then that's disaster and you definitely don't want to let it dry and then roll.

Painting is not my "lane", but the job has fallen to me so any humour is a HUGE help - and your expert advice and explanation as to WHY you do things the way you do helps as well. 😁

  • @Maghanashi
    @Maghanashi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Cutting in with a brush is perfectly fine as long as you're laying on the paint as heavy as you will with the roller. If you're spreading the paint to a micron thick then you'll get picture-framing. I use a 15" roller in a frame and cut in first - as long as you're cutting in with a good amount of paint on your brush you won't see any differences.
    It could also be down to using crap paint which is a very real possibility.

    • @Maghanashi
      @Maghanashi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also: It's never a good idea to throw a freshly loaded roller into the corner or edge of a wall. Coming back to cutting in - you simply won't get paint directly into the corners without either a) build up, or b) uneven coverage. When it comes to cutting in the walls you'll find the fresh coat won't be meeting the walls in a lot of areas.

    I recently painted ceiling and used a corner roller to get paint even on corners. Without it you will have paint on the walls dripping and looking awful. Also I thinned the paint when painting at winter when the air is dry. Without thinning I would see the edges because the paint dries super quickly.

    You should-be turning your roller upside down every second or two to keep it from dripping until you get it on the wall.. of course is going to drip if you're standing there like a sheep herder out in the wilderness holding a huge staff in his hand LOL . Love your videos bro.. oh...and your RIGHT..you're not a painter, but you do kick ass with drywall. Thank you bro. Oh yes ,I'm a painter. I spray all my ceilings and brush and roll my walls and trim.😉

    It's a painful process to paint your own house and to be a painter full time to paint someone else's house is terrible unless one must love to paint. Hats off to Vancouver Carpenter for these wonderful videos with useful information. To have big houses is a total waste and it's bad for the environment, earth and ourselves.

    Flat paints generally hide lap marks, so that's not an issue for ceilings and you can minimize it even more by rolling with the direction of the light source.

    • @shanekavanagh7763

      You do one coat in one direction, and second coat in the direction of the light. That's how you avoid lines. Sand and dust between coats

    Best way to paint a ceiling is a Titan 440 and an 18” roller. Spray and back roll w a flat sheen. Done.

    How do you deal with small hills and valleys in the drywall finishing? when you roll you will see that the roller pressure is relieved in those areas and produces a poor finish. I find that you should apply in a direction so that your roller is perpendicular to the direction of the drywall seams to apply a uniform finish. Don't always apply according to light source direction in a room.

    Rule number one: use ALOT of paint, then you dont have to push and struggle to spread it our evenly
    Ive never once used a tray(or whatever ots called) in all my 15 years as a painter. Here in Sweden all the buckets of paint can take a 23cm roller. Tray, aint nobody got time for dat

      It's a different type of paint, too. Paint used in Australia is very washable once dry, and non-porous. German paint has a very different texture (more porous) and bucket sizes and shapes are also quite different (wider and more volume). I would say it lets through vapour more than the Australian paint, and it is not as wash and wear resistant. I suppose Swedish paint is more like German paint, and Australian closer to North American. Reason might be different use cases. German paint often goes on rendered walls with or without a special layer of textured wall paper underneath. This textured wall paper (google Raufaser) seems virtually unknown in Australia.

      I think he was saying that you will mess up wet drywall if you paint it before it has dried all the way. I guess?

    • @VC-Toronto
      @VC-Toronto 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He's referring to un-primed (or unpainted) compound that has been applied to the drywall. Until it has been at least primed, the surface is very susceptible to scratching or being gouged from the end of the roller frame. Paint/Primer helps consolidate the surface and strengthen it. A setting type compound will be more resistant to damage, but some of the premixed lightweight or easy-sand compounds are pretty soft, and easily damaged prior to painting.

    Most of the time if there are roller lines/lap lines it's not because an edge has dried but it's the paint itself and there's not much you can do to stop it unless you spray. This is why the top brands are formulated a special ceiling paint that doesn't reflect the light and gives you a perfect finish.

    • @GifCoDigital
      @GifCoDigital 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called flat finish which he mentioned and is using. And seeing lines is 100% from letting your edge dry. Wtf are you on about?

    • @MephProduction
      @MephProduction 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GifCoDigital That's not true, lap lines/roller lines has nothing to do with dry edges because 'ive had them and there were no dry edges, plus how the fuck you get a dry edge when you're rolling a ceiling anyway? unless you stop after each length for a break.. which nobody does. It's the paint, hence people now use Anti-reflex as it prevents this (and allows you to touch in if needed) or they use what's branded as 'Perfect Mat' It's all about the paint, maybe paint in the uk isn't to the same quality as you guys? @@GifCoDigital clearly not if it doesn't happen with Tikkurila, And again it's happened to me in cold weather, and nobody leaves an edge for a few minutes when painting a ceiling. I've spoken to many decorators who are far older and more experience than i who have had the same problem. (mostly with VM on ceilings) It all started happening not long after the Eu regs came in about reducing voc in paint, so i suspect that's part of it and why manufactures like Tikkurila and created a paint designed for your ceiling. You should already know all this. Bit like picture framing, some paints do it and some don't, it has nothing to do technique although there are things we can do to minimize it.
