One tip: Put a paint tray into plastic bag and then pour paint on it, that way you never need to clean a paint tray. When finished, just turn the bag the other way around, used paint will be in a bag and your paint tray is clean.
just wanna say, 4 years later and this video is amazing, my parents house is incredibly old, 20 years+, old paint and everything, I'm hoping to surprise them by repainting their walls, ceilings etc so this video is incredibly helpful to me.
Vancouver Carpenter is AMAZING. As a total novice, I watched all his drywall videos. I/m now starting painting and glad that I still have VC echoing in my ear. Thanks, Think Reno!
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the password. I love any help you can offer me.
You got a fan by posting a very useful, quick video about painting a ceiling… you got a subscriber by your hilarious comment about your wife being annoyed by your voice. 😂😅
Thanks for referring to Vancouver Carpenter also - he is THE master of plasterboard repair on this planet! Your video on ceiling painting was also cool - the downside is now you made my buy 18 inch roller set! :)
Thank you for this video as I am a new first time homebuyer. I am about to start projects in my house. First one is painting. The walls are hospital white lol. So I am painting them a color called Swiss coffee. Do I have to paint the ceiling too or can I leave those white
I'm 1sec into the video 🤦🏼♀️ I was gonna buy that roller head but didn't & I was gonna use a sieve for my paint 🤔 I need to find a stocking now🤞🏻😬 over the years I think I've applied 3inch of paint to my walls because I didn't watch any info. Thank you kindly Sir I needed this video 🤫 your wife sounds crazy 🤣🤣 ALL the best 💙💜🏴
Are the walls already primed? My sister painted the ceiling with white and was not careful with the roller so i have white paint around the top of the walls. Should i re-prime that area of my walls? The color will be a medium peach. Just afraid the white is too white compared to the primer and it will show
Hi! Do I need to use primer on walls that are already painted, or only on new drywall? And do I need primer on my ceilings (they're already white, but more glossy than the new paint will be, and slightly different shade of white, the one room w/ a new ceiling is primed already), or can I just paint them straightaway? And for the edges between walls and ceilings (we're doing the ceilings first), am I better off using a brush carefully, or tape once the ceiling is dry? I don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I can't afford to have this done, and my house was trashed by a hurricane, we're having to fix the whole inside already, it's a mess lol. So, I need some tips. Thanks!!
As long as the old paint is dry and clean, you can just paint read over it without primer. And if I am painting, both the ceiling and the walls, I always paint the ceiling first. When doing the edges on the ceiling, it’s OK to get it on the walls, and then when you paint the walls, just use a brush carefully for the edges. It’s hard to tape off the ceiling since most of the time there’s some texture to it.
Hi, Can I use a watered down acrylic ceiling paint, like at around 30% added water, as covering layers underneath before putting a final non-diluted layer as the top coat? Will the thinner coats of paint underneath compromise the longevity of the paint job even though the top coat is non-diluted? Let’s say I put the watery paint on a wall to cover it twice and then put a final top coat of non-diluted wall paint. Is that ok?
Found you through Ben. Great tips thank you so much and subscribed 😊 You reminded me of Michael Scott from The Office at the end :) Stay safe up there! From Australia 🇦🇺
Up to the individual painter, but if you roll first, you can see how close you can get to the wall and then have less to cut in. It’s how the professional painters I know do it! Saves time.
Thanks for sharing. Question. If walls are already painted. Do you need to cover walls and windows with plastic to avoid splatter on them? Please advise.
I usually just cover the floors and furniture when painting ceilings. If you go slow at the edges near walls and windows there isn’t usually any “splatter”
Hi, Thank you for the information, We are doing a project . And the painter sprayed the ceiling( huge flat ceiling with 4 windows/ 48’x22’). After that the electrician did some patches. My question is, can we roll the patches or we have to spray it? Thanks
It will never look exactly like a sprayed job, but you can roll it. Best to use a sponge type roller to get the smoothest finish you can. Do several thin coats
I’ve heard on other channels to paint sideways or perpendicular to the direction that the sun shines through the window to avoid being able to see any lines left in the direction that the sun shines in. As if you’d be able to see the stripes if looking at the window and they’d be coming towards you easier to see than if they are moving horizontally from your view towards the window that has light…??? I am really confused because I’ve watched about 12 videos and it seems to be an even split 50/50 on which way is best to paint when you have a window that sun shines in through… Please clarify if possible thank you I appreciate the great content!
For my last coat I always go in a pattern where I roll away from the window light source, then back toward the window. Going the other way I find you can see the ridges left in the paint from the roller when the light shines across the room
If you roll perpendicular to the light entering the room you’ll see all the ridges created by the paint as you overlap, so I avoid that by going with the light
@@thinkreno man thats exactly what the other video said. Im in a nightmare with this cieling. If i have to redo it again, ill be doing it your way. The best tip I can give you is don’t cheap out on the paint. Makes a huge difference. You can put 10 coats of crappy ceiling paint on any direction you like and it’ll never look good. Go to your local paint store and ask them for the best flat ceiling paint they carry. Sometimes even one coat is enough with the good stuff
Sure, but wall paint has a little more sheen to it so it’ll show off imperfections a little more. Ceiling paint has a flat sheen to prevent that as much as possible
I'm at it just now, painting a new 2r-appartment, a short rest before the next roof layer; I've done some painting in my days, but always great to get good tips. All the very best!
Do I need to prime first before painting on existing ceiling paint that’s 10 years old? Any particular brand of paint I need to use? Would it look patchy if I like to paint only a section that is not part of a dome shaped ceiliing?
No need to prime over an already painted ceiling. If you have a piece of drywall or wood with the old paint colour on it, any paint store can scan it and match the colour. Otherwise it is tricky to try to paint only one area and have it look the same as the rest. I use a good quality flat white paint for ceilings. Different stores carry different brands, but I stay away from the cheaper paint. Usually they don’t cover well or hide imperfections well
@@thinkreno Thank you !!this is very helpful, after recently patching and painting a section of ceiling, it looks patchy, the ceiling is originally white and we painted white on the affected area. Is it still required in store to color match even if the paint color is white? I am little confused now whether to paint the entire. Ceiling or just the patch with an exactly matching color?
If you’re happy with it, then I’d just leave it. If you’d like the white paint to match perfectly over the area you fixed, you either need to colour match it or paint the whole ceiling. If you’re painting the whole ceiling, no need to colour match. You can go with any shade of white you like.
Any primer will do but for the ceiling paint it’s worth paying extra for “ultra hide” paint. It’ll hide all the streaking that most ceiling paints leave
Ive always heard you should cut in first, then paint. Otherwise the cut in creates a halo effect and it can be noticable. Dunno if thats a painters superstition or if it has merit.
I’ve done it both ways and as long as you use a quality paint and a quality brush, i have never noticed any brush strokes up on a ceiling either way. But sure, you can cut in first if you prefer. I know a lot of painters do.
I once saw someone use a wide roller and use the strangest technique to paint the ceiling corners. He would very strongly roll and ram the roller into the corner and rely on the heavy pile squishing paint out to both sides of the corner so he wouldn.t have to brush
One tip: Put a paint tray into plastic bag and then pour paint on it, that way you never need to clean a paint tray. When finished, just turn the bag the other way around, used paint will be in a bag and your paint tray is clean.

what do we do when the room is in the corner of the room and has windows in two sides, like in a L shape room?
I’d go with the windows that get more of the direct sunlight coming in. My final coat would roll toward them

Would a professional painter not cut the ceiling first? Is there a difference as to when you do it?
Up to the individual painter, but if you roll first, you can see how close you can get to the wall and then have less to cut in. It’s how the professional painters I know do it! Saves time.
Is it possible to blend old and new paint? It seems it’s still visible after I did some color matching
Sure, as long as it’s the same base and the same sheen. You don’t want to mix eggshell paint with gloss paint, for example.
Is it me or will it be less wasted paint if you just strain from the roller pan?!
Wonderful painting tips! Thank you.

Whats the best paint for the ceiling? I just painted my ceiling and it horrible. 😢
Better to buy some decent quality paint for the ceiling. I like to use Sherwin Williams “Ultra Hide”
What is the best roller for regular ceilings

The one I recommend in the video is great, but otherwise I like to use a roller with a 3/4” nap

Haha. Thank you!

the part at the end was funny !!!!
Thank you very straightfoward no faffing about .

Do I specifically need ceiling paint or can I use any paint for interiors?
You can use any paint, but ceiling paint is flat and hides imperfections better than other sheens
