  • After a young Chinese Canadian medical student is attacked during the COVID-19 pandemic, she goes on an emotional journey, exploring her identity amid rising anti-Chinese racism. #CBCShortDocs #AloneTogether #CovidAndWhoIAmNow

    Mary Zhu never thought she would be a victim of racism.
    When she was three years old, she immigrated to Canada from China with her parents. She had always felt Canadian in every sense of the word - until she was assaulted in Kingston, Ont., at the end of March. Amid rising fears over COVID-19, a man attacked the 22-year-old medical student, shouting, “It’s all her fault!”
    Zhu lost her sense of security after the assault. The incident made her doubt her identity as a Canadian. She is afraid that no matter how hard she works, the colour of her skin will be the main thing others see in her. At the same time, she remains hopeful.
    Zhu’s story brought back painful memories of SARS for her friend, fellow Chinese Canadian Frank Ye. Ye was six years old when the disease hit Canada. His friends refused to play with him; they believed all Chinese people had SARS. Ye says racism anti-Chinese racism has existed throughout Canada’s history, and the current pandemic is just fuelling it. He sees racism as another kind of ‘pandemic’ that Chinese Canadians constantly face.
    Although Zhu didn’t identify as Chinese in the past, this experience made her realize that being Chinese is a part of who she is. She can’t - and won’t - run away from that.

    One reason I admire SINGAPORE is that the government there
    Places the emphasis on being Singaporeans first
    Race language and religions second
    It united them and kept divisive issues at bay.
    All cultures were celebrated, appreciated and recognised.
    Which meant that there were fewer “unknowns” and less fear.

      This is also the reason why it's very cruel to raise children in a foreign country, especially if you are a visible ethnic minority. At least for Asians, they have a home to come back to when things go bad. Asian-Canadians, oh well you'll have to struggle in Asia just like a foreign immigrant. Another issue with the anti-Chinese response to COVID is that it derails more serious concerns about wet-markets. COVID happened because of our unsustainable and patently immoral treatment of animals - wet markets (and factory farms if you look back at past pandemics) are the problem, not Chinese people.

    • @florjean965
      @florjean965 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sorry, I’m confused and I certainly don’t want be critical of someone that cares about animals...but... aren’t the Chinese people keeping the wet markets in business by shopping there? I have learned that it is traditional for some Chinese people to buy live, exotic (sometimes endangered) animals and kill them at home because of the freshness factor. There’s some belief that different animals offer certain health benefits...although I personally don’t believe I would share those views. By saying it’s the market’s fault for existing, and not the fault of the people who frequent them...ii absolves (or denies) people of the responsibility to make their own choices.Perhaps our common goal here is seeing to the closure of wet markets, forbidding exotic and endangered animals from being imported and consumed, and improving the treatment of all animals in China...the Yulin Dog meat festival where the dogs are boiled alive before consumption is another unnecessarily cruel practice! As you might have noticed, I have VERY strong feelings about this topic...and not simply sentimental (awww poor doggy’s)...this is serious stuff!

      @pooscifer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ginevragali2981 You're exactly right - it's not exactly that the people are blameless - I mean they choose to shop there. So really, anyone who eats meat is complicit in this, not just Chinese people.

Irrespective of how many mental gymnastics you go through, the truth is that mass farming, of any kind, causes pandemics. Either you stop contributing to it or you don't, but don't delude yourself into thinking you're a good person or an "activist" if you choose not to. There's really very little difference between what non-vegan Americans do and what chinese wet market consumers do - they both contribute to pandemics, it's just that the former is packaged up in cutesy grocery stores. In general, I know and accept there will always people who are prejudiced against me but I don't have any hatred (unless it becomes violent which I haven't experienced yet) or will assume they are racist automatically because I know I hold the same basic prejudices against other groups of people and I don't want to be told that I am racist. A lot of the time it isn't and I am starting to inhibit these same notions, attitudes, feelings of newer immigrants. Definitely not condoning what he did because I would have just went off and fought back. I mean that's how any citizen of any country would do. There really is kind of no point trying to explain to people that commit these hate crimes that I am a citizen of that country except to fight back.

    Maybe it's because I am a very cute girl, and in general, beautiful peeps are less likely to experience these kinds of mean things?
    Also, my dad said if a stranger randomly comes up to me and asks my race, I should say Korean or Japanese because these ethnicities have less bad vibes than Chinese in many countries across the world.

Your assumption was correct that I'm "white," as I probably should have made clear instead of leaving it unduly vague as "non-Asian," but, in any case, I will concede that my analogy was not exactly apt: being the only white face in a sea of Asians in a provincial Chinese city is not quite the same as being "the only Asian" on a Canadian city street, given the much greater ethnic diversity in pretty much any Canadian urban area. As an aside, my observation, of apparently being the only non-Asian in the mob of people milling about that station, in no way made me feel uncomfortable at the time, it was just a kind of "wow" feeling at the novel experience. In fact, before ever traveling to China, I'd already spent a number of years in other parts of Asia, so was not unaccustomed to being an "ethnic minority" -- it's just that the Handan experience took it to another level.
