----- The Immigrant is a 1917 American silent romantic comedy short. The film stars Charlie Chaplin's Tramp character as an immigrant coming to the United States who is accused of theft on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, and falls in love with a beautiful young woman along the way. It also stars Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell.
The movie was written and directed by Chaplin.
According to Kevin Brownlow and David Gill's documentary series Unknown Chaplin, the first scenes to be written and filmed take place in what became the movie's second half, in which the penniless Tramp finds a coin and goes for a meal in a restaurant, not realising that the coin has fallen out of his pocket. It was not until later that Chaplin decided the reason the Tramp was penniless was that he had just arrived on a boat from Europe, and used this notion as the basis for the first half. Purviance reportedly was required to eat so many plates of beans during the many takes to complete the restaurant sequence (in character as another immigrant who falls in love with Charlie) that she became physically ill.
The scene in which Chaplin's character kicks an immigration officer was cited later as evidence of his anti-Americanism when he was forced to leave the United States in 1952. In 1998, The Immigrant was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". - ตลก

I still wonder how could people in 1917 era of silent movies were so sound in technologies that is beyond the techniques of even today's; hats off to all my ancestor's creativities
CHARLIE CHAPLIN WAS DEFINITELY WOW ONE OF THOSE WHO HOW TO ACTUALLY PHYSICALY USE NOT ONLY SOUNDS BUT ALSO MUSIC 🎶 AS WELL!😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍👍
...Today we need millions of Dollars to make a movie! 104 years ago they needed only good actors like Chaplin with about 5000 Bucks
to make a funny Movie!....He is one of the all time heroes of cinema and entertaining!!!.....
Greetings from Vienna!!
@Gun_Samurai $128000
We could make the exact same movie for 5k (even without accounting for inflation), but noone would like it, because standards have risen.
Also, I just watched this for 5 minutes and I'm getting sea sick
@McFlickers cg. Or just edit the video.
Indescribable. Simply marvelous. The rocking soup bowl, dice throw, coin on floor.
👏Chaplin.
I love
Charlie Chaplin
Yes, yes, yes. Still laughing. He is so precious.

You must be nuts

So sweet, oldfasioned an decend! I often watch such films to calm down before sleep. And I recommend it to all people with sensitive hearts. Love from Warsaw, Poland.
I've been doing it for a long time. I've watched almost all movies of Chaplin and Laurel&Hardy. There is something pure in their movies that you can't find in today's movies. Something very pure, heart-filling, and hope-giving. I don't know what exactly is, but it is felt.
@Anita I'm not the only one. 😊
Greetings to Poland!

Still funny and heartwarming after 104 years! This was Charlie Chaplin's most creative period when he was still making shorts (called 2-reelers back then), and he developed the story and ideas as he went along. The second half of the movie in the restaurant was filmed first and the ship sequence and arrival in America were shot afterward. Eric Campbell played the "heavy" in each sequence, as the angry, thieving gambler on the ship and as the gruff waiter in the restaurant. Henry Bergman played a rotund woman on the ship (in the hilarious bit where Charlie went back and forth like Henry was a rolling pin, as the ship rocked back and forth); and then later as the artist who ultimately came to Charlie's rescue at just the right time. Henry would go on to work with Charlie in movies for years later when Charlie made feature films. Eric, who was actually a sweet and gentle man as well as an awesome comic talent and a friend of Charlie's, sadly, died in an auto accident not long after this movie was made.
Thanks for all this information 😊
Died in auto accident? What, he was going over 20 kmph? What he was driving, a bicycle downhill?
@@jhonsmith7991 Why not, first car accident was in 1891 - "The world's first automobile accident occurred in Ohio City, Ohio in 1891. ... Lambert's vehicle, the first single-cylinder gasoline automobile, which was carrying Lambert and James Swoveland, hit a tree root, causing the car to careen out of control and smash into a hitching post. Injuries from this accident were minor."
And first death due to accident is in 1899 "The death of Henry Hale Bliss (June 13, 1830 - September 14, 1899) was the first recorded instance of a person being killed in a motor vehicle collision in the United States."
I keep watching over and over this unique piece of art
Gosto muito de assistir Charlie Chaplin 👍👍👍👍
a masterpiece
Note how funny Chaplin is and portrayed the reality of harshness around him living in those timelines almost telling people it was OK to be treated like cattle it was the norm especially if you were a commoner, immigrant, etc and yes people did carry out their instant justice as in the restaurant scene. It still happens today. But at the same time people did enjoy a lot more freedoms less government regulations. Charlie Chaplin was a genius.

This is absolutely classic and amazing. Chaplin is a legend. I didn't click any fast forward or change the play speed. With movies nowadays, I watch most of them in fast speed or skip, just not engaging enough for me.
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT CHARLIE CHAPLIN!😌😌😌😌😌🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I don't know why but I've laughed even more with the scenes in this colorized version than that in black and white one.🤣🤣🤣
Simplemente genial!!, no hay otro artista similar a él.

Without a doubt an absolutely brilliant, genius-artist of cinema. His films are full of pathos, tragedy and comedic moments.

Como sempre, sempre passa o tempo antigo para moderno, todas as pessoas que eram atores do Charles Chaplin infelizmente morreram, mas possam que estejam vivos de quem eram novos. Tempo antigo para Moderno, sempre mudará o tempo. =)

Every arrogant and snooty person in the USA needs to see the boat trip to calm down.
I've ever wanted to see those films in Colour. I love how they look.
I can't watch this film or similar ones without thinking of my grandparents, who came to NYC from the Caribbean around the time this film was made. They'd have gone through many of the same trevails.
Charlie really great. This is third time to watch him. Thank you.

La música de fondo como muy victoriana , da miedito , lo mejorcito de esa década.
Charlot inolvidable.
Old is gold 👉😉👈🤗🥳🥳
Nice. 💓❤️
Wow. My lord in colour 💖
Omg he was a funny guy even today!! I find him very funny and he was a cutie too...
He was always charming those beautiful old fashioned ladies in their beautiful floorlength dresses. I'm probably one of the only guys today who wishes women were like that again. They cared about romance and being old fashioned lady like.
Официант настоящий люцифер)))))
One of the best shot films Charlie Chaplin made.
This was so good
He is the best still watching his movies. Never get tired of him such a great actor
