----- A shipowner intends to scuttle his ship on its last voyage to get the insurance money. Charlie, a tramp in love with the owner's daughter, is grabbed by the captain and promises to help him shanghai some seamen. The daughter stows away to follow Charlie. Shanghaing actually became a federal crime as of 1915, the year this short was made. I guess that's one of the reasons for making this particular film that year, to show us a film of what sailors were legally able to do and were really doing up until that year

Best Merchant Navy (instruction) film I ever seen. They showed basically everything.
It should be shown at all the maritime schools and said: this is essentially how it goes.
The part on how they get people onboard is metaphorically accurate.
The collusion between the owner, the captain and the chief mate is just as it goes in their everyday business.
Rolling effect is pretty good for that time, just as the depiction of it causes if things are not fastened.
Great timing releasing the lifeboat.
This ending for the captain and the chief mate is the dream of every seafarer, specially deck crew. Kkkkk.

However, this person probably needs to get his/her certificates and license validated with the US Maritime Authority; which for the Merchant Navy, I believe is the US Coast Guard. This is the same requirement for any other IMO signatory country. For example, if a shipping company has a ship registered with Panama, then the ship's crew need to have the Panamanian Seaman Record Book and validated license and certificates.

And is the person allowed to study any Maritime related courses in the accredited institutes in the US? If I understood it correctly, for example, say in Canada one can get a certificate in a sea-faring course in an institute but can be employed in a Canadian registered vessel only if he\she is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.I am just curious about the regulations regarding this in the US.
