Most excellent review! 👏🙌 I appreciate how you take your knowledge and experience from your background and make it relevant to real world use. I’ve had the Yoshi pipe and 91 stage 1 tune on my CRF300L Rally and I’m very pleased with the results. Just finished installing the velocity stack and air box mod so I’m anxious to see how it performs. Keep up the great work ✌️

What a great video! Very well done.. What I'm struggling to wrap my brain around is why Honda does not optimize the ECU mapping if it's really not detrimental to the engine. How could such a large gain be had just by tuning the ECU of a machine that is designed for performance? Honda should know every single parameter that the motor can operate safely in and could easily optimize the ECU to reach those specs so why don't they?

Seems to me a few things. Emissions and longevity/reliability. They have recommended a very hands off maintenance schedule of 8k miles I think between oil changes and the bike seems to be set up for happy dual sporting aimed at the entry market in terms of price and setup of the bike itself. You run a bike a bit richer for more torque and a bit more ignition advance this does inevitably increase cylinder wear as you get a bit more washing of oil off the cylinder wall with rich mixture and a bit more heat from ignition advance and this also degrades the oil faster as does running it hard which you’re more tempted to do if the bike has more power most people use whatever power the bike has most of the time. I think if you tune a bike you need to up the maintenance schedule significantly.

With the extra power from all these mods how are the motor temps when ridding slowly through trails or even just sitting still idling? Does the fan come on more often? I'm in Northern Ontario and I like getting "out there" to find old trails. Many of them are overgrown and the going can get slow. That kind of riding isn't always friendly to "race natured" bikes. It seems like you're bridging the gap between stock foofoo bike and the aformentioned race natured bikes. For example my 2021 Beta 500RR-S runs hot in slow trails and the fan is on 100% of the time. Same even for my KTM 250XCFw. All my performance bikes require a minimum speed to keep air flowing through the rads. I'm just curious if your bike took on that race bike caracteristic with the increase in power?

I've been running a 550 91 ECU with a Yoshi full system for a while, but have held off on the intake mods (some videos I have seen have been real hack jobs). What are your thoughts on the ease of installation and that side of things; are the intake mods worth doing?
PS Thanks for the vid, its nice to see a rider out there with experience. The longer pull through the rev range is something I have mentioned to several people and I feel it is under-represented in most '550 test' content.

1-You can take off the backfire screen(metal mesh) on your stock air filter to get hi-flow.
2-Add uni vents to your airbox lid or alternatively, 550 airbox lid with frogzskin.

Just installed my 550 stock improved 87 octane. There might be a bit of a performance bump, but the bike runs much cooler, and the throttle is much smoother. Overall pretty happy with it. Also Ive heard if you add some performance mods down the road, you can send the ecu back to them and theyll get you upgraded. Seemed like a no brainer if that is indeed the case.

It's transformed the bike - smooth from the get go - just lots more grunt right through and about an extra 3,000 usable revs at the top. Thanks all round - and a special shout out to Maverick at 550, not only is the product A1, the customer service is too,

something you said doesn't add up. if you previously had to shift up to 3rd then back down to 2nd that means your wheel was turning FASTER before.?????. because a new ECU does not change your gear ratio (my immediate thoughts - BUT : )... I would like to know a little more as to how you were able to leave it in 2nd.. is that because before, you were losing power at a certain RPM and had to shift to keep power on the wheel at the exact same speed where now it keeps pulling into higher RPM's in 2nd with no sign of slowing down?? (effectively blowing past the redline) ??? does a stock 300L pull all the way up to red line? or past?? I am just confused about what you mean by that. usually the redline is determined based on the engine pieces more than what the ECU can handle. that was some maniac riding in the woods. my cousin does that. I don't. I know what it looks like on camera though. I'm glad people like you are out there causing these companies to map out these ECU's. Seems like "plenty" of juice.. I wonder what top speed is on a flat highway now. I'd be curious to know.

I dont understand the logic of buying a dual sport and then spend all that money to turn it into a dirt bike. Why not get a proper dirt bike to begin with?

    • @patoneill555

This way, you can gear up at home ride to your trails, then ride home and have a shower right off the bike! No more load to ride.

@@NapoleonDynamite69 its a good bike overall but it cant do dirt bike things. Stock suspension is too soft. Power is meh. Thats why he had to do all that upgrades. My argument is that he could have bought a decent dirt bike with that money he spent. To which he explained about not having the need of truck to bring the bike to trails.

Installed the same 91 stage 1 tune a couple months ago with the High Flow airbox lid and a DNA filter. Absolutely love it! One thing I also installed was a G2 throttle and it's so much better then the stock, smooth and no hesitation when first twisting the throttle. Love the channel! Have fun riding!

So from 18.30 to 18.16. That might be a lot for a race. However, it's only a 1.3 % improvement, which means nothing for everyday riding.

    • @patoneill555
      @patoneill555  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That may be so. However, as mentioned in the video, there are many other benefits to this ECU. Cleaner fueling, a broader power curve along with more overall power.

@@stefanhansen5882 Yes, I do think so. That cleaner fueling will make around town riding far more enjoyable taking away some of the jerking sensation some encounter on the bike. Also, gaining more overall power along with having it spread out over a larger portion of the RPM range will make for better acceleration and highway riding.

I don't ride on major highways often. When I do, I usually keep it around 100/110 kph, which the stock ECU can do easily. This review was more focused on the off-road improvements as this channel is an off-road biased dual sport channel.

Unfortunately, the DNA filter is a K&N style filter. Great for road riding. However, once you get serious in the dirt, they tend to get clogged up much faster than a proper foam filter. Hence, why performance off-road bikes run the foam style direct from the factory.
