It should be said that there are 2 ways of recording MIDI into (in this case) Reaper, from a digital piano.
    1. Using a USB cable (e.g., my Roland FP4 digital piano has a USB B output) to go directly into one's computer (and into Reaper)
    2. Your method, which uses a 5 pin DIN output cable, going in to the 5 pin DIN input on your audio interface, and then connecting your audio interface to your computer via a USB cable

    Super cool.
I want to record Midi but render to audio using the actual sound of my digital piano instead of using the virtual instrument.
Can it be done? I imagine for that the digital piano would have to he connected to the computer.
Basically I want the computer to use recorded Midi to ask my piano to play it back using built in sound samples

so you can't record the piano notes by just connecting it to the USB?

I have to echo what others have mentioned. How does one get the actual piano to record and playback?
Good video, but I don't quite understand why someone would use a midi piano to play a software synth plugin of a piano.
Using the first and second options of either a mic or audio out cable will record the actual piano itself, yet when using midi we are using plugins to play the piano sound instead of actually recording the piano with midi.

Using a virtual instrument plugin (VST) allows you to have access to better quality piano sounds than the standard digital piano. There are free VST that are better than the sounds of even very expensive digital pianos. And a lot of those plugins allow you to change a lot of settings (attack, decay, etc.).

Thank you Paul! I have a question and hopefully you can help me out. I'm totally new at this so I'm sorry if I'm not using the right terms. When I try to play back what I recorded there's no sound. I tried to set the input as Stereo just to make sure my sound system is working properly - it is indeed - but I don't want stereo, I want MIDI. One difference I noticed between my screen and yours is how those soundbars alongside the track move. You have two red bars + two small yellow bars coming up and down. In mine it only shows the yellow ones. When I selected Stereo input I had both, just like yours, red and yellow coming up and down with the music. I'm guessing that if I find what is blocking the red bars my problem will be solved. Any guesses?

Hi! If my midi controller has a USB Midi port then I wouldn't need an audio interface, right? And I could monitor just using headphones plugged straight into the computers? Thanks for the video, super helpful!

Thanks for sharing. One question: how the sound we are listening was the captured? Line out of the scarlet to a recorder?

I have plugged my digital piano into Reaper using a USB key and then using it as a midi keyboard. The only problem is it occasionally disappears so I have to keep going into preferences to reset my midi devices! Any thoughts on this please? I asked on the Reaper forum and they suggested disabling USB Selective Suspend, which I did but that made no difference.

Do I need a pair of midi cables? My piano has 2 input

    • @PaulDouglasMusician

Good question! For this application, no you only need one MIDI cable which goes from the MIDI OUT on your piano to the MIDI IN on your USB interface.

@@PaulDouglasMusician Yeah but what if your shitty interface doesn't have midi connections?

My digital piano is a Yamaha P-45 and it doesn't have a MIDI out; it only has a USB-B out. Can it still work with an audio interface? Would I need an adapter?

    • @andreasierra744

Hey, I don't know if it's too late, but it works! I used the USB-B cable from my printer, downloaded the yamaha drivers for my piano from their website, and it works just like in the video without the audio interface

I have a unique sound effect built into my piano called shepherd moods. Can I record that into a midi track without using a virtual or vst piano Instead?

if you have a sound in your piano I think it's best to connect your piano to the audio interface with two jack cable

@@matteofederici302 no it will record an ''audio track''... he will not be able to edit notes...he wants a ''Midi track''
