    This seems massively useful. Sony [presumably] has the same thing on their newer cameras, but it only "works" in Sony Catalyst, so you have to 'prep' the footage first (AFAIK). Blackmagic needs to get on the autofocus game now. :)

      @@GimbleProductions wow, cool. So the lens data is important. and I'm with you on BM allowing us to use the gyro info to cut camera tracking out of the pipeline. That would be amazing. How do we make that happen?

    • @GimbleProductions
      @GimbleProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SereneBobcat The biggest issue I find with 3D footage camera tracking is things like like lens flares, objects obstructing the camera, moving elements inside the footage like actors can cause problems. I tried 3D camera tracking scenes with swaying trees and it was causing errors. The camera doesn’t record movement information as far as I know, so I think the 3D camera tracking would be good for getting a movement analysis and then have the gyro data provide another layer of information of the cameras movements.
      I’m not a programmer or am I sure if that’s even possible, but I do think having the actual data of camera rotations and orientations would provide much cleaner information! The Blackmagic Raw SDK has gyro data inside it now so it’s up to third parties to develop solutions

      @@GimbleProductions I thought it might be - I took a manual 135mm out to try, but didn't enter data (just to see how far it could be pushed, and would be obvious if it wasn't seeing it)
      It didn't do anything I could see when stabilised - although you can enter lens metadata in Resolve's media tab, it didn't seem to make a difference, so I guess it just ignores anything there - it would be useful if you could enter it manually

      @@GimbleProductions yeah, I see it more of an assist - I've tracked shots for sky replacement, and if there's not much detail going on when there's a lot of sky, it's tricky - having rotation data for that I think should help
      I've not read about anyone using it on high end VFX where you think it might get tried first - RED cameras can have gyro data apparently - maybe it's been tried and doesn't help?

    Awesome video dude! I love what BMD have done but it's a shame the shutter angle has to be so low. I get why technically, but its a shame. I always shoot at a 180 shutter angle so it seems like I won't really be able to take full advantage of this!

    Thank you for the excellent video.
    I have a question regarding the content at the 5 minute and 40 second mark in the video.
    I use the Sony A1 and stabilize the images with Catalyst Browser.
    As you mentioned, I understand that a high shutter speed is necessary to achieve good results. However, as you pointed out, using a high shutter speed causes the video to exceed the usual 180-degree shutter angle, making it feel unnatural.
    Is this why you apply the Pixel Motion Blur effect to mitigate this issue?
    If so, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide some general guidance on how this can be done.

    • @GimbleProductions
      @GimbleProductions  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your comment and your compliment!
      You are correct! I use a high shutter speed but that makes footage appear choppy. To counteract this, you can add a Motion Blur amount in the colour page in Davinci Resolve OR apply a Pixel Motion Blur effect in Adobe.
      Pixel Motion Blur in After Effects is pretty good as it lets you set a desired shutter angle! You can simply put 180 as the value and voila! Resolve requires you to somewhat guess the value, but with reference footage, you can set the value to your liking

    Great video and impressive results! I recently purchased a 6k G2, one of the selling points being the advantages of gyro stabilization. I am not achieving results on par with your video however. I have done all the tips in this video like entering lens focal length manually and increasing shutter speed to minimize motion blur. The thing that made the most difference was increasing frame rate from 24 to 60, however the stabilized video still bobs up and down while walking. I have been working on my smooth heel to toe walk, but you've got a clip where you're running and it still ends up super smooth?! I've noticed the best results using gyro stabilization seem to occur when paired with the sigma 18-35mm lens, could there be some connection? Do settings like resolution or constant bitrate vs constant quality make any difference? I'm new to black magic cameras and Davinci Resolve so quite possible I'm missing something basic. Would love to get results like yours!

    I should add, I do not think the camera records movement data - the camera seemingly only records x and y orientation data. For CGI work as I mentioned in this clip, perhaps the gyro data paired with performing 3D camera tracking could greatly improve results rather than just relying on the 3D tracking alone. What is your favourite thing about this new update?

      Could you please be a little more specific on your comment about high shutter speed? I always keep my shutter speed at 180° angle. I'm just concerned that if I need to go higher than that, it will affect the cinematic motion blur that 180° achieves. How much higher do you go?

    • @GimbleProductions
      @GimbleProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@leebrandt8597 The higher shutter speed removes the motion blur from the footage - if the shutter was still set to 180, but you perform the gyro stabilizer, the footage will have motion blurring visual distortions going in all different directions in the footage. You’re probably best to add the motion blur back into the footage in post, like using After Effects pixel motion blur setting set to 180 degrees to bring back the look (I usually set motion blur range to small on Resolve at about 25 and that does the trick for me)
      Have a look at the power lines in the shot with the girl skipping - you’ll notice wonkiness and blurring occurring. A slower shutter speed like 180 would have even worse distortions, ruining the shot

    For this to be even more useful, angle/shutter should be set as high as possible and this will leave less motion blur introduced to the captured image. In post you can add that "cinematic" motion blur. TH-cam vp9 compression it's hard to see detail in areas of focus resulting loss in sharpness contrast. This is good and bad. In TH-cam you are not noticing sudden burst of blurs. But in edit or in streaming platforms that accept higher bitrate files, like Vimeo. Also Vimeo is used in professional fields to display final products to clients. Depending on your client, they might notice the bursts of blurs.
    All in all, if you know you need to stabilize the footage, prepare for it properly. Remove your ND filters (they can downgrade your footage anyway with poor infrared filteration resulting in red tint in black surfaces), use higher shutter angle/count to compensate overexposure. Try your best to not introduce micro jitter. Good trick is to use something to lean to. Tree, lamp post, sit down, use tripod and get some weight to your camera. Camera strap behind neck is very good fast way.
    Good shooting and alwayse test and prepare!

    None of the other videos mentioned anything about sensor calibration, or setting your focal length manually with a manual focus lense. Its been an absolute hassle trying to find information about it.
    I do agree moving up your shutter speed will produce much nicer looking results (after motionblur correction) but the caveat is you will need to be very careful with screens / non-video lights / and indoor lighting of any kind - 75 or 90 degree with 24/25fps causes mad flicker, around 108 degree with 30fps seemed to work on my tv. Any higher fps like 50+ will not work at all, mad flicker on any angle so it makes it a non-option for a lot of indoor scenarios or screen driven event work or the industry I'm in particularly (esports/gaming).
    But for controlled lighting scenarios and outdoor this is a nice tool to have.

    dam. ive been waiting for this for a long time. the results are just amazing, I had no idea this was available. Im good with my ninja walks and I always shoot with fast shutter on hand held anyway, to avoid seeing the "scarecrow effect" of motion blur after stabilizing. the vector based motion blur in fusion does a hell of a job. I always use it when im working on green screen to get my blur back after keying. and shooting in 6K should give enough room for the crop. I remember when I bought my 6Kpro and some were like "what a waste, we dont even have 6k TVs yet".. anyway, this totally rocks and I cant wait to try this out tomorrow. I think it looks AMAZING. and yes, for comping it would be great to have that data. Even if just for an assistant. Plug-in read sensor size from braw data and calculate itself if need the different crop value. This is definitely the best video on the new gyro stabilization feature!
    One note though regarding the point you made about BM providing positional data for 3D artists and for better stabilization - I am 99% sure that the gyro in these cameras is just a gyro (3dof) which is orientation data only. They likely do not have a gyro+accelerometer (6dof) which would provide orientation, acceleration, and deceleration data. By way of combining those two, you could derive positional data with the anchor point being the point at which the recording started. But alas, I find it extremely unlikely that the BM cameras carry that second vital sensor to yield such data.
    Hopefully that all makes sense! Again, fantastic comparison!

    • @GimbleProductions
      @GimbleProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I kind of imagined that was the case - there is nothing inside the camera to record movement data, just x,y orientation coordinates. I read somewhere the original ursas had gps inside but I may be mistaken. However, if it could somehow pair the gyro data with 3D camera-footage tracking could make for higher quality matchmoving compared to just 3D camera tracking alone :)

    • @genesis344
      @genesis344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GimbleProductions Technically you *can* combine a 3D tracker with then gyro and improve the quality of your track. It’s just that the way of doing it is to apply your gyro stabilization, “print” it by rendering in place, and then applying your 3D track. Less small abrupt movements in the footage will always make for a better track!
      Another point on the GPS modules providing data - GPS (even ultra accurate RTK GPS) wouldn’t be useful when it comes to tracking subtle camera movement, it’s just too coarse of data set to provide any improvement.

      the thing is, this actually IS fixing it in prep. this is technically the same as shooting with a gimble in most respects. many many things we do in post are already preplanned and we have the tools so why not. This technique isnt to fix problems we couldn't do right in the first place,. its to give us freedom to just get the shot.

  • @SuperOpinion8ed
    @SuperOpinion8ed 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    the perspective stab is just total sht. ruins whatever the shot is. The in camera gyro is pretty darn good. And, with a little better camera technique, I assume you could minimize the crop as well. Instead of running behind her, for example, ride a tricycle (for stability) or have someone push you in shopping cart! This is the last thing I was analyzing before taking the plunge in the 6k camera. Glad I found it.
    Regarding the issue with the crop in the slow walk in the hallway shot, i wonder if they'd have a user defined "safe zone" overlay in the viewfinder. If you could set a safe zone of 80% or 90% because you know how the crop will behave, it could save you a lot of disappointment in post.
