I'm about to tackle a serious backbow on an old 1970's eko 12 string and I'm going to give this a go, there's nothing to lose if it doesn't work I'll go old school and take the fretboard off. Thanks 😊

Thank you for both the before and after! I have a tele that I had not touched in a while, pulled it out of the case and back bowed with the truss rod under significant tension. Backed the truss rod completely off and the bow started coming out after sitting for a few weeks, but still very little relief. I am going to use a heating pad and wound strings and see if I don’t get my tele back without putting a new neck on.

I am original owner 69 Tele with back bow. I took it out of use. I had the truss fully backed out, 13 gauge tuned 1/2 step sharp. Had a good size relief. Put I away for a couple years. Didn’t help.

@@greg6L6GC thanks for the reply and sharing your experience. I tried a lot of different actions to get the neck back and I could not get the warp/twist out of the neck. Ended up replacing the neck with a solid wenge neck with abalone dots. Plays sweet even though it’s not original. With a sea foam green body, the neck is stunning in looks.

Worked PERFECTLY on my Epiphone Les Paul. Set up a Patron account and I’m in! Thank you very much.

Great videos! This is exactly what I've been looking for. I just bought a "mint" Chinese made Epiphone Casino from a guy on Marketplace. I checked the neck before I bought it and decided to take it anyway, knowing there was no relief and thinking I'd adjust the truss rod when I got it home. It looked like it just left the factory so I took the chance. Horrified to to find the truss rod completely loose!
I decided to give your fix a try so I ordered a set of 50's and the heat wrap so I'll give it a shot when they arrive.
Can you give me any idea as to how tight to tune the strings. Sounds like you had them pretty tight but I don't want to take a chance of breaking the head stock off!
    Thanks again.

Yes, I am trying this for a 98 Gibson SG. Same scenario with craigslist. This is the most simple way I've seen. Thank you for sharing! !

Ok so I did this kinda the same way, first the strings all wound tightened to bend the neck upwards. Then I put it in the backseat of my car for 12hrs when it was 100°f outside. I don't recommend this as anxiety of the outcome was at an all time high. Then I wrapped the heating pad between the 3rd and 12th fret. Wrapped and ran the heating pad on full for 8hrs to 10hrs continuously. Let cool to room temperature, and put a neck straight edge and adjusted the truss rod to straighten the bow and works, 100% thank you for your video, and bringing back the heat treatment for neck repair.

This has to be worth a try to rescue my old strat. Many thanks

Thanks for both videos. I bought a used acoustic guitar at a thrift store with severe back bow (guitar was probably not stored under string tension). The truss rod is completely loose and all strings are touching the frets near the sound hole. Nothing to lose, I'll try this heating pad to see if it will fix the problem.

Would you recommend something like this for an S curve? My neck has a back bow hump around the 2nd fret but forward bow around 4the fret and on. Adjusting the truss Rod really only takes away the hump or flattens it out. The forward bow isn’t too affected by it. It’s an acoustic with a removable neck. My uncle built it in Canada and brought it to Virginia for me (attempts to regulate humidity have proven fruitless)

Thank you for sharing and documenting, this is by far the best video covering this without gimmicks or expensive tools. Do you think this could work for upbows? I have a beautiful Les Paul - Epiphone hand made in Korea with extreme an upbow.

It will work as far as the heat bending the wood back in place but you will have to come up with a way to manually put the back pressure on the neck since the string method won’t work in that case. “Freddy’s Frets” has a TH-cam channel (Fred Gabrsek) where he a actually does what you need. He is an amazing guitar builder as well. Definitely worth a try. Hope this helps and keep me posted on your results.

So you did 2 hours of heat for 5 days straight, or 1 day heat and then let sit for 5 days? Just got my Flexwrap today. Thanks for the follow up video.

What was the neck wood? I would think that may make a difference.

Most likely mahogany or at least an Asian version of it.

I didn't understand how long you applied the heat. Can you tell me?

I used it in 2 hour intervals over 5 days. The Sunbeam shuts off automatically after 2 hours. I didn’t worry about or make sure to be there every time or at night, I just reset every time the light was off when I walked by. Hope that helps.

What strings did you put on? There was a glare right over the gauge.

It was already in for setup for $35 and I offered to do it for an additional $40 only if it worked. He was very happy.
