great segment Wayne. strong points on why to acquire one. i hate winterizing the outboard. Down here in Calvert County we can get non ethanol and I've switched everything over to that. More expensive at the pump but cheaper in the long run not gumming up the carburetor. Thanks for sharing.
Got a navy 6.0 (9.9hp) for my 14 foot aluminum boat. I would not say it’s overpowered at all, and of course you can run it at 500W or 1000W if you want efficiency. One thing the EV car makers learned from Tesla: it’s hard to convert gas heads if you don’t give them similar or even more power. And that’s actually easy to do for even lower cost with an electric motor. We just don’t have the options yet, the motors are either small and cheap, or big and expensive. Physics allows electric motors to be both small AND cheap AND powerful.
I used a Spirit 1.0 Evo Plus on my 20' Bennington pontoon on a no wake electric only lake all last season. Have remote steering and the wireless throttle. Setup works flawlessly. Normally cruises at 100 watts and lasts all day with the integrated battery. Thought I would need to upgrade or buy an additional battery. Not required at all. Just buy one!
Please discuss charging options. Stock charging equipment with battery. Alternative charging setups. What if I am out cruising for a week with a electric outboard on the dinghy. Is there a 12v DC charger available? Electric is cool, clean, and simple. Energy density and charging are the key issues.
I will look into some of the options. They use a non-standard charging plug and provide an AC charger and also have a solar charging option - but I'm not sure effective it is.
I just bought my first alum 12 Jon boat. After watching your videos you have been a great help. Can you please, create a video or you might already have one using this motor on your Jon boat. Please, explain a little more indepth while using it. If you don't mind. I like to see it in action. My next step is to buy a motor. The ones I have come across are too much money, or need repair for dirt cheap or antique style ones that are hard to find parts for. Thank you.
It does. However it maxes out at 9 hours 59 minutes so when I ran a 100 Ah battery with this, instead of displaying something like 23 hours, it read 9:59 until the battery was drained enough to be less than that.
I have looked online at older trolling motors that indicated HP and I wonder if they had to stop doing that because the HP was so far off. I think that's why all these electrics use the fuzzy logic of "equivalent" because they are like a 3 HP sometimes but never have the same top end speed as a similar gas outboard.
This is a little quieter and has a better steering feel than the early release NT300 that I had. But the NT300 is not bad at all and has a very slight higher top speed. I hope to spend some time with some more Newport products in the future.
These are pretty cool, but the cost per battery is kinda a non-starter for me really. I think for some use cases they're perfectly fine though, just hope battery technology progresses a bit more to get the costs down.
Second comment: can you compare the spirit 1.0 to your mercury 2.5hp? I suspect 1kw is not 2.5hp, in fact it’s about 1.34hp. But of course the torque curve is totally different on gas and electric.
You're exactly right - the torque curve is different. My 2.5 Mercury has been problematic and I didn't take the time to solve all of its problems last summer. But both of my old gas 2 strokes have a higher top speed but don't do as well at lower speeds. The electric motors have a nice even way of accelerating and are happy to cruise at any speed unlike my 2 strokes which have their happy spots.
The blue wooden boat? The motor cost less than that - and I had to build it! But some of the other segments where I am in aluminum boats - they were very old ones that I bought used for about $500 each.
The epropulsion does not match a 3hp gas motor when comparing on the same boat. It is equal to a 1 hp gas motor. I love it otherwise. Great motor for medium size lakes and electric only. It really is great for trolling, better than the trolling motor even. It does not do well in weedy lakes as the prop gets tangled. I have run it for as much as a 6 hour day. The tiller folds down which is a great feature.
Having run this and a 2.5 and 3 hp gas 2 stroke, yes they have a higher top end speed but the 2 strokes only really start performing at higher RPMs. I like the more even feel of the electric.
I prefer actual gasoline or there's an outboard that operates on propane that electric engine is way too too slow and weak ugh greetings from southern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
I don't want anything to do with your electric motor. Sleepy joe is gone and so are his ignorant E.V. ideas. Besides I have never seen a charging station anywhere I've ever fished in over 60 years and I've fished in alot of places.
@@braddog359 my Grandfather said "unleaded gas will ruin your engine". My father said "don't use ethanol gas it'll ruin your engine". They refused to change anything.
Do you use anything on your boat with batteries - like a trolling motor? If so, this is exactly like that and I just take it home and recharge the battery very easily after hours on the water. These are not political, were invented several years ago, and you may have not realized, but I never mentioned anything about the environment or pollution. I like these because they are easy, quiet, and start every time.

❤❤❤ We are rebuilding our 65 power catamaran and your insight help us a lot!
I hope to experience a catamaran later this year.
@WayneTheBoatGuy Awesome! They are AMAZING!

I don’t have a jon boat at the moment, my smallest boat is the blue wooden skiff I built last year.
Hi Wayne, does the screen dtill work with the off brand battery, as in does it still display watts, and battery charge level with the screen?
It does. However it maxes out at 9 hours 59 minutes so when I ran a 100 Ah battery with this, instead of displaying something like 23 hours, it read 9:59 until the battery was drained enough to be less than that.
@WayneTheBoatGuy not a bad problem to have I'd say. Thanks for the reply
Would you compare this battery to parsuns similar battery sold on boats to go?
I have not tested any Parsun products but I have been working on trying to do so. They have a very limited network in the US at the present time.
Cool! I have a 7.5 merc, keeps giving me problems, So I might consider! I fish creeks so I don't need to go very fast.
This has been the most dependable motor I've ever had.
I had one for 3 years. It's the best engine ever! Never ever I will buy a petrol engine again.
About 30 years ago MinnKota made a 3hp 12v and a 4hp 24v transom outboard. Not sure what it equals in pound thrush. (I still got a 3hp.)

you prefer this instead of the newport nt300?

Yeah I get it! We have seen some real reductions in cost in the last couple years and hopefully that trend will continue!

Theirs no shell station where u live? Shell is ethanol free
Not the ones in my area. I have to drive about 30 minutes away - or pay marina prices.
@WayneTheBoatGuy yea that sucks, theirs a bunch of them where I live in Towson area
First comment!
I appreciate it!
all these negative comments about electric aren't good. there's quite a few people that circumnavigate the oceans using electric motors.

Oh I would much rather spend hours fine tuning those rotten little carburetor. Messing around with mixed gas and polluting the atmosphere.
And that’s ok!
I am being phicesious
Looks amazing

Yeah it’s not well suited for situations needing more power.

Yes Joe Biden, inventor of the electric vehicle. Politics is bad for your critical thinking, you should get other hobbies.

Can't we have a place without stupid political crap, keep it to yourself or go whine to Trump.
