THE ORIGINS OF THE MEGATRON.... The megatron was a chance buy in some chinese store when I was on holiday... Ive not been able to find it online... Its a nice soft split tip brush that works well on alloy wheels.. but I had to glue a plastic shroud round it. So its not something you can buy online :( If I go back ill order 50 of them and modify them all for detailing use....
Hey John!!!!!! I know this is an old comment, but Since first seeing Megatron, I have been searching for a brush like it on and off. I think its meant to be a Wax or Chalk brush for applying finishes to woodwork. The biggest I have found seems to be 2"-3" but I can't tell from the video what diameter Megatron is. www.royaldesignstudio.com/products/super-large-3-stencil-wax-brush
megatron is like 4-5 inches diameter.. this is no ordinary mortal chalk brush.. forged from the fires of mount dhoom it bends only to the will of its master.. no imitation brushes come close.. its mine, my precious!!! ;)
John, we must be the same person buddy. I use c5 all the time, and I have no questions its one of the best wheel coatings available. It completely restored a friend of mines old, custom black truck wheels he had. Not only does it add protection, but it can really bring the depth of the wheels chrome or paint to life.
I've used c5 before and i think it's brilliant! Applied it to my daily about 16 months ago and it's still working great. It makes cleaning alloys so much easier because I can just go over with shampoo and a wash mitt and they come up amazing😁
This is excellent time to watch this video. I removed aluminium wheels from my car and set steal wheels with winter tyres. I will buy new tyres for the summer, so this is great time to apply ceramic coat. I even repaint wheels at the start of this year. Thank you, you are so detailed!
I have this on my wheels for the past 8 months and im really impressed with how well it is at repelling dirt, only thing i would say its not the strongest water beading product but not fussed about that. I use snow foam a wheel woolies brush and a detailing brush and the dirt just comes off dont need to use any heavy wheel cleaner.
Came to TH-cam to looking into ceramic coating my wheels. Low and behold I find a brilliant video and on the same car as mine, the M135i! Those recessed grooves behind the spoke can be a nightmare if you don't keep on top of them! Ceramic coating to the aid!! Thanks
I had my wheels coated in this stuff at the start of this year (2019). Bloody boss stuff! Althought you still have to wash the wheels physically they come up bloody great every time.
"Start at one point on the alloy". I think you should have said start at the valve as you'll never lose your starting point. I had to revisit this demo after having a wheel recoated (20" Type R) to make sure I did it correctly. Your videos are good, straight to the point, no "BS" and you have the experience (Been there, Done that). Thanks.
Just revisited this as I’ve got some C5. Decided to go for it as I’ve just bought two new wheels to replace some marked ones (got a deal on eBay). Before they go on the car, will coat in the living room! That will then only leave me the final two on the car to do on a separate day so not such a nightmare. Of course there’s the hubs callipers and suspension to clean up too so still a big job!
This video got me to subscribe, thanks. I have just added GTECHNIQ EXOv4 to my 8 year old car, mostly as a practice in paint correction and application prior to my new Mustang arriving in 8 weeks. After seeing how good the paint came up, I looked at the rims and thought they need something too, hence finding this video.
my whole car including the wheels are coated with cquartz UK ceramic coating. I find my car so much easier to clean than it was before the coating was applied. It was applied by a professional detailer and the wheels were removed in order to be coated properly. For cleaning the car and wheels I generally just use snow foam and a rinse. If the wheels are overly dirty if I have been on a long motorway journey I will use a ph neutral wheel cleaner then add snow foam on top. I am very pleased with the results I get.
Just applied it to my wheels over the weekend and used this video as a guide. Good advice. I would just add that a 15 ml bottle exactly covered (4) 18" wheels. I was hoping I would have enough for the brake calipers too but there was not enough. I coated both the front and back (inside of the drums.) I would also say that it is easiest to do this job if all 4 wheels are off the job at once. So if you have winter wheels on the car, do it to your summer wheels in the spring just before you change them (and vice versa if you also want to coat your winter wheels)
I have been using C5 for age on my customer cars , i have found the coating works very well. make my job easyer cleaning my customer wheels .most of the time snow foam remove 50% of the brake dust form the wheels a non acid wheel finishes it off
Great video John, love your channel. I trust your advice. I went with a wheel coating on my BMW about 1.5 years ago and it was best decision ever. Made wheel cleaning so much easier. You still have to clean them with more than just a blast of water, but it's an easier job and they look perfect when done. Only way I've ever been able to keep clean BMW wheel barrels. Another tip, go full ceramic brake pads. Cheers from Southern California.
Excellent as always Jon. As I don't have this sort of facility to apply coating type products I have always used FK1000p on my alloys. No crazy prep required other than cleaning, fallout removal and de-tarring. This gets me 3+ months from a single coat. Recently though I have been trying out Crystal Sealant (little sample I sent) and that has just hit the same 3 months mark but still beading incredibly well. I think 6 months is looking possible with this sealant/ceramic hybrid product, test it out on your wheels if you like! :)
Another good review John... I personally use the CarPro DLUX product to protect my rims... and they are still going strong today, all I have to use is either surfex hd or bilberry wheel soap to clean and they come up spotless every time! I see so many people using waxes etc which is fine for maintenance, but if you spend the day doing it properly I just don't understand why they don't do use products like this... keep those vids coming John!
I'm planning on trying this as my first wheel coating as I finally get my all season and summer set of wheels and tires set up. Gyeon rim seems like a pain to apply so I figure ill try this! Thanks for the multiple videos on this product and others in its class.
I used C1 on both my 2 car's bodywork plus C4 on the trim (all same product) in 2013 and did it outside. Worked well but was tricky. Need to be inside with great lighting as you said. Never tried the C5 as thought it too labour intensive. I just use a wetcoat type sealant these days on the wheels as they are so easy to use every few weeks. By the way, you were having far too much fun with the latex John!
i;ve had both Carpro Dlux and Gyeon wheel rim, both didnt last anywhere near a year and that was washing the wheels with shampoo and wheel woolies, i'm not a fan of these ceramic on the wheels but i'm willing to be proved wrong. i'm currently using fusso on them just now i have bmw 19inch 172 alloys absolute murder to clean lol.
Brilliant Jon Been thinking of putting this on my wheels for a while now. As you say it's a full day worth of work if you are like most hobbiest detailer. Hope all is well my friend see you on the next video🙌🏻
Top video as always Jon! Always got the notifications on so I know when you post new content, best detailing channel on TH-cam if you ask me. Your work and effort you put into these videos is very much appreciated :) Cheers!
Thanks for the detailed info. A good down to earth explanation, no crap or BS. I'm doing my 2018 FK8 Type R wheels which I got back from an Alloy Wheel restorer a few weeks ago because I wanted a better finish on the inside ( not because they had been curbed!) so it's off with the wheels, a soapy wash then a going over with BH Cleanser Fluid before application of C5. I'm hoping this will last a good while and the red Brembo's are getting C5 treated as well. That was a good suggestion to buy more application pads.
My summer wheels happen to be Durabrite forged coating. Not sure how this coating is done but apparently its part of the wheel forging process. My winter wheels do not have this coating and I've been using FK1000p but getting surprisingly poor results as you mentioned durability falls off quickly. I definitely plan to ceramic coat these winter wheels in spring when they come off!
Thanks for this video. It has been extremely helpful. I have purchased new wheels for my BMW so they were clean to start with, but I applied the Belt Hamber Cleanser Fluid as advised and followed up with Gtechniq C5 throughout and then lightly going over with a Gtechniq MF cloth as recommended. Fingers crossed it does the job!
Nice one John. I got C5 on my wheels and its not hard to apply just do the prep right as You Said. And it will be so much less cleaning of the wheels aheard.
Hi Good video I see you left the original wheel weights on If you need new ones later on can you C5 that little area?? ... and will new stick on weights stick to the coating ok??? Thanks
great video, would love to see a follow up video in a few weeks/months to see how much easier they are to clean and also maybe a similar sort of video on carbon ceramics platinum wheels
brilliant video!!! i purchased c5 last year and still havent had the time to test it but you have given me a kick up the ass to get at it lol i have few questions first off where the hell did you get that Megatron brush it brilliant!!! secondly do you do all 4 wheels in a day and how do you manage that? or are you jacking car up take one wheel off do that then put spare tire on that side then jack other side then do that then leave car the way it is for 12 hours/next day so both rear tyres are cured then next day put tyres back on then move on the front to do them so total 2 days work? or are you doing 1 per day?
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding underneath.. one wheel at a time.. although I do have axel stands but it doesnt actually save that much time.. its a pain specially when you have to film yourself :(
wow you got a gem there m8 plus it looks genuine and megatron an amazing name for that lol or even my favour prehistoric shark the Megalodon!! yeah i might have to do it 1 per day , so do you leave it on a jack or do you put your spare tyre on it so you can drive it? mate wish i lived local to you id be down to help you plus gain some knowledge.

I was thinking about Crystal Serum Light during the whole video. I'm curious to know what you think about it, John. I've been loyal to Optimum Gloss-Coat but I keep thinking about using other brands.
think clean and shiney or in2detailing will do it mate. I try and buy from these 2 vendors because they have loaned me tools and/or provided products to feature, and have been by far and away the most approachable and helpfull towards the channel (their prices are also good as is the service)...
Being as there seems to be enough in the bottle, I was wondering if doing two coats would give a better result Jon? My XK alloys will be getting a full strip and powdercoat soon, I will be coating them with this straight afterwards. Should save me a fair bit of work, hoping to just get away with a quick clean down after the 2 mile drive home? Great vid yet again Jon.
C1, C4 and C5 are all identical products re-labelled as different ones. Just thought everyone would like to know :) I've used C1 and C4 on wheels and they perform identically to C5.
Thanks for that John. I was thinking that a clay bar before sealing may have been a quicker cleaning option, but I didn't realise a clay bar was so abrasive. I was looking for a quicker method as I do not have the facility to take my wheels off so was looking for an easier pre clean method. Also can I ask from the C5 coating how do you know when the sealant has worn away?
when to all visable purposes you cant see it doing anything really.. Ie its not making it easy to keep clean, it doesnt seem to be repelleing contaminants etc.. Its hard to know exactly.
I have newly painted and clear coated alloy wheels. Should I mount and balance them before applying this coating or should I apply the coating and then mount and balance? Do I need to allow the paint to cure any particular time before applying this coating.
hey robert. get them balanced first. get proper high quality weights that are painted. wheel shops will often use cheap steel weights that rot and go rusty. BMW do really nice wheel weights that are painted and wont rot you can see them in this video. let the clearcoat on the alloys full cure off for 1-2 weeks. When you get the guy to balance them if you have them on your car, ask them very politely to be carefully when removing the alloys. sorry to say it but some tyre places whip the wheels off and the barrels can drop on the disk shields and scrap up the finish. Dont apply the coating untill the wheels are balanced is best because the coating can repel the glue for the wheel weights.
John I just tried C4 gtechniq and can't believe I didn't buy it before brilliant stuff. A 2011 pug plastics looking like new. Should I try gtechniq ceramic coating next?
Great video as always, My only grumble which is linked to every video is how long the... Opening clips are? With the music overplay and some clips from other videos. Only a silly complaint but just my thoughts. Keep up the great videos
Will you do full wheel cleaning tutorial? Not so much to teach people how to suck eggs, but to show your preferred products. I am currently looking to do a wheel well clean and wheel clean, so looking at possible de greasers/ dressings and fall out products you would use etc for the wheels. I am looking to buy products for this job to do in the next coming weeks so all info is appreciated right now, J
I had to make a choice for this video.. I went with this because it was little bit cheaper (although the price always very a tiny bit).. but mainly because of all the good product information Gtechniq put out there.. I like they way their MSDS isnt hidden away, or you dont have to email asking for it.
Thats not a problem John, might buy this for my new car if it performs the same as the platinum wheels. theres a company called Slim's detailing which sell a few products for a good price. i actually live close to them so delivery costs wont be a problem. As always keep up the vids!!!
no.. this is my understanding as always could be wrong but anyway.. so the underlying chemical that a lot of the ceramics use is a patented product that has many applications beyond automotive coatings its produced by a large indian chemical manufacturer.... A company in korea took that coating and formulated a range of ceramic coatings which you could buy.. or you could work with that company for unique tailored versions of it. So I believe a lot of the ceramics are coming from that place in korea. but I think there is another formulator of ceramic coatings as well.. so perhaps 2 root places you can go.. optimum car care are the only ones I know of that had the expertise (in dr david deghoussi) to formulate there own version of a ceramic using silicon carbide, which is different underlying core product from the patented polysilazane resin most of the others use. There are a lot of coatings available now.. some of them may well be the standard array of offerings if you like from the root supplier or suppliers.. I believe Gtechniq are not just using standard offerings but have worked with their supplier to create specific product ranges under the ceramic umbrella. So I think there is more to these products that just the same stuff with different labels, but yes the base chemical resin they use are the same in a lot of them. Could well be wrong on the above but thats my understanding.
Forensic Detailing Channel I see..Thanks for the reply,I can tell you have really gone into research on ceramic coatings. And I get you what you say about gtechniq, they do seem to have made it their own with the research and product info.
Just wondering but when buffing it off, does this ruin the microfiber cloths? As in, can you clean them out and make them useable again, or are they a gonner after an application of coating?
How many cloths/towels would you advise for a set of wheel application / coating on a vehicle? I have never done it before, and I dont want to screw up, by not using sufficient towels.
Great stuff, but in all fairness most car owners either clean and wash their cars themselves and do not follow car detailers ways and most family owned cars maybe clean and wash their cars once a fortnight if they are lucky and those cars which are on the road all the time like your own car used as a reps car ,then and only then would i use a ceramic coating on the paint and wheels or rims, mainly because it will be a lot quicker to wash and maintain the car, but again your going to leave the car with out a wash or detail longer as well if you have a ceramic coating applied to the car, which if your going to look after the car meaning your going to wash and detail the car say once a week then the good quality car detailing products like most off the shelf items and a do it yourself approach will always be the best in my opinion ? But also lets not forget that most performance cars wheels have a performance based brake package as well which leaves a lot more brake dust and other contaminates as well, which means that as a car manufacturer you would think the rims or mags would have enough paint protection already, especially if your going to ash and protect the cars rims with off the shelf rim protection like say poorboys rim or mag protection or even say carpro hydro2 lite which will do the same especially if your going to keep good on cleaning the car and its wheels or rims or mags. :)
Dear Jon, I've just got some brand new rims for my vehicle, and am going to follow your instructions very carefully. Just one question...will applying C5 on new rims hamper (cause an issue) the fitting of weights when balancing the wheel. For example will the weights stick to the C5 or not? Keep up the great work! ANDREW (Hampshire, UK)
I would get the alloy balanced first then clean up and apply. in theory the ceramic could interfere with the wheel weight sticking to the barrel.. althought how much of a problem that is in reality I dont know.. when you get the wheel balanced use good quality coated weights like the BMW oem ones you see in this video. a lot of the wheel shops use cheap steel ones and they rot quickly.
In my opinion and cloth used to buff should be thrown away or relegated to sort of engine bay or those crappy jobs.. not for buffing on paintwork again.. Imo.. others disagree I did a video on this called thrashing microfiber cloths with ceramic coatings
Hi, I find your videos really really useful and applicable to real world use and as such I value your view. I am ( was???) absolutely wedded to the C5 coating but now am very concerned about its replacement after its service life of 1 to 2 years. Apparently the product dulls after a few years and should be removed before the replacement is applied. I'm advised that the only way to remove the coating is machine polishing. This is surely very impractical with an intricate wheel. For a car kept long term , I think removal and re coat every few years is extremely scary. I would seriously welcome your experienced view. Thankyou
this material will be gone after 1-2 years Michael. the surface of the allow is constantly getting blasted with abrasive brake dust and stronger cleaners. So really after 2 years. your aim is to do a very very heavy decon on the alloys because they will be plastered in contamination. So clay the crap out of them. And then try and gloss them up with a machine polish.. With yes its a real major paint. Heres the bit thats interesting. If you watch videos you may see professional detailers showing you shots of polishing alloys wheels very carefully and what looks like very intensivly... In reality allow wheels are a pain to polish and it would be insane to try and treat them like the normal paintwork in terms of perfecting them (they also have rock hard clear typically). so just gloss them up quick and dont spend longer than 15-20 minutes on an alloys polishing it. When you start spending hours polishing an alloy like you see in a video, gotta ask yourself if you might as well just have it refinished for 50 quid. (factor in your time cost of coating etc) Same when you see these 200 hour details being done on cars. thats not really a viable thing to be spending that long as a chargeable service because its only 20 man hours to strip prep and respray the entire car. not all detailing is real. Biggest problem with ceramics dulling the finish is actually around how you buff these products.
@@ForensicDetailing Thankyou so much John. Fully understand and totally agree. I've done as you said. I'll stop worrying and carry on. I do agree that a lot of what I call extremist detailing is not real world . Thanks once again
@@ForensicDetailing hi sorry john, I forgot to as about the cone polisher you had on the drill......I could see it in your attached links......where can I get such a thing.....maney thanks mike
I know that people have had problems, with lower end products. Some of them get scratches very fast. Some start to peel off. If you want to get it off, it has to be sanded off. Also if there is any corrosion, there is a change it is going to get worse. If something gets wrong, it is a mess. So basically, if you want your car to get full coating, it is going to cost mega money. If the job or product is bad. It is going to cost mega money to fix it. Doing it yourelf is usually not an option. OFC wheels, glass, interior etc is doable. And I think reasonable, and I like the idea. Would have to be absolutely sure about the product. I know there are some products, that last 12 years and more (manufacturer claim). I´m not sure how to get those things off properly. They don´t just slowly diminish, it is there permanently. Good luck for the next guy, when that thing start to let go. And yeah, when you have a car that special. It is probably going to be a future classic. It needs to be original, so no ceramic coatings. This is what I think, but I love to learn more about that kind of coatings. Right now, I believe ceramic wax is the right product for me. And that comes off with a prewax.
Yes you are right. But it is still a big job. Or should I say expensive. Am I really the ONLY one who thinks that those are valid reasons, not to like the ceramic coating? If I had a nice garage, and just bought myself my dream car, that is not a classic/future classic. I would do it myself, with something very durable and long lasting. Cost is reasonable then. If I would pay some professional garage, then I would rather buy something else for that money, because the cost is MEGA. And to get a super good result, they coat it multiple times. Sure there are people with more money, than they can spend. For them, 7 coats of ceramic is perfect. Can´t get any better results than that.
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding underneath..
Great video. I have done my wheels so far in farecla g360 compound and finishning kit, would I just need to wash the alloys, panel wip and then apply. Also would autogylm magma be too harsh to get some of the contamination off the alloys after using the wheel armour product. Thanks once again. Dave
yes so just degrease panel wipe the alloys after polishing.. (wash wont hurt). Once applied and its built up contamination you can indeed use some autoglym magma to decon the alloy,.
hmm I would suggest refurd.. Or else whats like the point in protection the condition of an alloy wheel if it needs refinishing? not sure.. other than this stay away from damage if the clearcoat is scratched away. you could just ceramic over it but it will be hard to buff.
Any idea what effect this would have on black matt finished wheels? I am struggling to find a product that is OK for matt as most say they add some form of shine, again great review, when you get to look at paint sealants would be interested to see what you think of AMMO Reflex combined with AMMO skin, I am finding them really good but they are all I have used so have no bench mark. Cheers Neil
Great video thank you. I’m looking to use myself but I wanted to know about washing the wheels after. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to hand wash my own car often. So most the time I go to my local (Eastern European) hand car wash place. Will they most likely be washing the c5 away with the products they use?? Many thanks for any help/advise.
Great channel, loving watching and learning from your videos so thanks for all your efforts...... I have coated my alloys with C5 and its done a great job. I am just considering doing a C2 coat, but was wondering what the process is? don't think they need any iron or tar removal just a wheels off clean. Should I panel whip before applying C2 as well.... what if anything will damage the coating (never use acid cleaners)
I would just wash and spray come C2 in and buff. C2 is a pretty casual product I dont think theres any point in doing intense prep you will just degrade the coating lee
Hi John I love your videos! Just a quick questions, whats the brush that says "megatron" on it, its not linked, I would really love to get my hand on one!
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding underneath..
I think in some situations it's good to just use a wax/sealant like fk1000p, if it's a Crapheap and all the customer wants is to sell it then that's where taking the wheels off and waxing them can make all the difference.
theres some advantage with the sealants... much cheaper and less prep and less like environmental things and less cure times... but really whenever sealing or wheel waxing.. the wheel has to come off to clean and prep it.. so if your doing that then might as well go ceramic really.. but yer its like pros and cons to all things.. im sure ill be putting some fk1000p on something soon still...
Yeah I agree with that but I'm gonna do a Honda crv because the guy wants it to look as good as possible to get the best trade in value. But I'm not gonna put C5 on cos it will be a waste of time lol. All comes down to practicality I think. By the way love the vids, one of the best detailing channels out there!
I was wondering if you agree that it is wise to use Evo v4 after the wheel armor application, and would you wait 12 hours in order to apply the Evo v4 GTECHNIQ.
Hi great video, I have bought a lot of gteq stuff. But I have gone with Carbon Collective Platinum Wheels.. not used yet but it is supposed to be good. Cost enough.
I applied Gyeon Rim on my wheels a couple weeks ago. Easy to apply as wax and also can do more than 1 coat of product. Pressure melts the dirt away. Just wondering if it's ok to iron x your coated rims?
if you can clean regulary with something milder like a shampoo - citrus cleaner might be a bit better, I think the fallout removers might be slightley acidic.. some say they dont strip coatings etc but im not 100% sure..
should be able to use fk1000p on it.. there are specialised metal coatings with some detailing range.. I think generally ceramic dont bond great to it.. but thats only what ive read.
wait for the full cure for a week Keith. After that you should really need to use fallout remover immedietly. I would just after application clean with a mild soap regularly.. bit of pressure wash, brush work as needed. no strong acids or stronger caustic cleaners really should be needed. In 3-6 months maybe could use a bleeding fallout if necesary.. basically you should fine it easier to clean the wheel with the coating on, and that means you can use milder cleaning products.. you can go in with heavier stuff but it may shorten the life of the coating a little bit..
Forensic Detailing Channel thanks! I mean which video was it you showed it in, picking up the microfibre pile? I've been looking for ages still haven't found it 😔
Hello, I am hoping to purchase a set of alloy wheels & before they go on the car I would like to apply protective coating to them. Have you made a video SINCE the application on how easy they are to clean?(repelling dirt & brake dust & all other contaminants) Thanks in advance.
Yo scott, they become easier to clean once the coating is on.. like for the first few months the dirt flies off with the pressure washer as time goes by the effect like slowly fades. but you should get a good improvement for 6-12 months mate at least.
Hi John, Nice video again ,and really nicely timed for me,as I'm about to do the wheels off protection on my M4. I have a couple of questions if you can help? I've looked at the torque specs for my wheel nuts, and they are quite high NM numbers,I'm assuming your M135 is the same sort of values.I've never torqued a wheel that has an anti-theft nut,is it easy/fine to torque up to specifications,or do you encounter problems (socket coming off etc,I dont want to damage the wheel) ? My other question is regarding the wheel weights. I notice your car like mine has the factory weights, that are coated ,which is awsome,as I've had even good quality weights like Trax corrode over time and make the wheel look bad. Do you know who makes the OEM weights,or what they are called so I can ask for them when having new tyres? All the best with the channel, keep the videos coming mate. John.
hey.. im having a nightmare with the locking wheel nuts.. I was told to torque them upto 140... but one of the nuts wouldnt come off and I damaged the locking wheel nut and adapter.. they are a real poor design.. getting a new nut and adpater next week.. might has to have the nut drilled out.. :( I dont know what the OEM weights are mate.. my advice is speak to BMW and ask for the exact torque for the nuts and do them up a little bit lower and they should know where the OEM weights are from as well mate... also put some copper grease on them when you put them back on.. I didnt and like I say I couldnt get one itt.
Yeah ,thats the sort of issue I was worried about. 140nm is the correct torque for my wheel nuts aswell,I've invested in a long breaker bar in case,I may also get an air gun.... I've a feeling that my local BMW place wont have a clue what I'm talking about with the weights,as I bet they just buy standard bare metal ones. They corrode fairly quickly and look terrible, you have to wire wool them but they are really prone to re-rusting. The coated OEM weights are worth the effort to find I think, they look far better, and stay looking good.
check weather forecast. avoid applying if theres rain or wind or any adverse weather conditions. If you can get the car on axels so you can get all the wheels off the car, get it applied. let it set, put alloys back on very carefully. then leave alone and dont drive it for 24 hours. thats all gonna help.
Hi mate. I've just purchased a set of genuine BMW 403m wheels freshly powder coated.. should I apply the c5 armour before I get the new tyres fitted to the rims? I guess it'll be easier this way?. Many thanks Your opinion will be much appreciated.. Lee
Bought some a few years ago and followed all instructions. It made no difference to the finish nor did it make it easier to clean. Watching this video I realise I probably was too hard buffing it off with the microfibre so probably took most of it off!
Jon I’m going to do a wheels off C5 coating one at a time but once I apply and level off when can I put the wheel back on so I can take the next one off?
what I did was leave it about 1 hour and then put the wheel on carefully avoiding touching it (just hold the tyre) and carefully gently put the bolts in. And then I let it fully cure on the car.. so yes you can do this for sure kevin.
I used McKee's 37 wheel coating last fall and while it kept the face of the wheels clean, the machined area of the barrel has some pitting. If working on 1 wheel at a time ( Truck ) can the wheel be reinstalled after the coating has been applied ? How long should one wait before putting it back on the vehicle and moving on to the 2nd....3rd....4th wheel ?
Hi mate great vid I’ve just got some of this stuff recently but I’m a bit wiery if it’s ok to be used on motorcycles wheels also what product would you recommend to be used on the bikes panels some are carbon and some painted any advice be great thank u

www.royaldesignstudio.com/products/super-large-3-stencil-wax-brush
megatron is like 4-5 inches diameter.. this is no ordinary mortal chalk brush.. forged from the fires of mount dhoom it bends only to the will of its master.. no imitation brushes come close.. its mine, my precious!!! ;)
Can we get an "after" video showing how well the product stops dirt getting bonded to the surface?
John, we must be the same person buddy. I use c5 all the time, and I have no questions its one of the best wheel coatings available. It completely restored a friend of mines old, custom black truck wheels he had. Not only does it add protection, but it can really bring the depth of the wheels chrome or paint to life.
imgur.com/a/o6dB8
I use C5 and its excellent. I applied to a set of alloys 8 months ago and the wheels are still easy to clean. :-)
I coated both the front and back (inside of the drums.)
I would also say that it is easiest to do this job if all 4 wheels are off the job at once.
will do buddy thx for watching and feeding back...
This fk1000p, does it protect high polished aluminum rims and keep them from corrosion?
I found that using smooth velvet that came 4th in the best detail sprays attracts a lot of dust when it's supposed to be repealing dust
its a wax emulsion one I think which might account for that... different video though hakman :)
Thanks for the reply on Facebook before! Great info again! Cheers mate, keep up the good work
I used C1 on both my 2 car's bodywork plus C4 on the trim (all same product) in 2013 and did it outside. Worked well but was tricky. Need to be inside with great lighting as you said. Never tried the C5 as thought it too labour intensive. I just use a wetcoat type sealant these days on the wheels as they are so easy to use every few weeks. By the way, you were having far too much fun with the latex John!
OOOooo matron! :)
Very cool info! I just coated my windscreen with Gtechniq G1 and I love their products. Maybe I'll give this C5 a go. Cheers
i;ve had both Carpro Dlux and Gyeon wheel rim, both didnt last anywhere near a year and that was washing the wheels with shampoo and wheel woolies, i'm not a fan of these ceramic on the wheels but i'm willing to be proved wrong. i'm currently using fusso on them just now i have bmw 19inch 172 alloys absolute murder to clean lol.
Graham Reid
You speak the truth. These wheel coatings are very lackluster when it comes to both performance and longevity.
A great review. I have used it for a while. It has about 2-3 years longevity on a daily driven car.
Brilliant Jon
Been thinking of putting this on my wheels for a while now.
As you say it's a full day worth of work if you are like most hobbiest detailer.
Hope all is well my friend see you on the next video🙌🏻
This channel is iny opinion some of the best information on auto detailing
Top video as always Jon! Always got the notifications on so I know when you post new content, best detailing channel on TH-cam if you ask me. Your work and effort you put into these videos is very much appreciated :) Cheers!
cheers josh :)
How did u find the longevity of the coating?
Did it enhance the wheels gloss aswell.
I own same car 🚗 😊
As he said, I spent 90% of the time prepin' the wheels!
Just refurbed my Alpina classics and will defo be using this before they get mounted
Thanks 👍🏽
Nice one John. I got C5 on my wheels and its not hard to apply just do the prep right as You Said. And it will be so much less cleaning of the wheels aheard.
How did the coating hold up?
Hi
Good video
I see you left the original wheel weights on
If you need new ones later on can you C5 that little area??
... and will new stick on weights stick to the coating ok???
Thanks
Great video 👍🏻 What’s the finish like on satin finishes?
great video, would love to see a follow up video in a few weeks/months to see how much easier they are to clean and also maybe a similar sort of video on carbon ceramics platinum wheels
Do you ever do 2 coats?
Good video again mate keep them coming would love to see you do a demonstration on Gtechniq clear vision
brilliant video!!! i purchased c5 last year and still havent had the time to test it but you have given me a kick up the ass to get at it lol i have few questions first off where the hell did you get that Megatron brush it brilliant!!! secondly do you do all 4 wheels in a day and how do you manage that? or are you jacking car up take one wheel off do that then put spare tire on that side then jack other side then do that then leave car the way it is for 12 hours/next day so both rear tyres are cured then next day put tyres back on then move on the front to do them so total 2 days work? or are you doing 1 per day?
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber
tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and
safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put
that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding
underneath..
one wheel at a time.. although I do have axel stands but it doesnt actually save that much time.. its a pain specially when you have to film yourself :(
wow you got a gem there m8 plus it looks genuine and megatron an amazing name for that lol or even my favour prehistoric shark the Megalodon!!
yeah i might have to do it 1 per day , so do you leave it on a jack or do you put your spare tyre on it so you can drive it? mate wish i lived local to you id be down to help you plus gain some knowledge.
Where can I get the "Megatron" brush?

Found these under Chalk brushes.. Similar? amzn.to/2pUEkuS Top vids as ever.
Bingo! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282475177354
those are not the megatron!!!! the megatron has too much power for mere mortals.. It will consume you and ultimately destroy you!
Did you buy that and try it? His wheel brush looks insane.
Nice work, John !! Love to see you a review about how to apply crystal serum(light) appreciate your video's..👍
noted mate thanks hopefully we can do something on a full blown ceramic.. or ceramic combo soon.
I was thinking about Crystal Serum Light during the whole video. I'm curious to know what you think about it, John. I've been loyal to Optimum Gloss-Coat but I keep thinking about using other brands.
Do you need to polish the wheels first ?
Gtechniq c5 vs carpro dlux?
Great work where do you get the s20 you used from??
think clean and shiney or in2detailing will do it mate. I try and buy from these 2 vendors because they have loaned me tools and/or provided products to feature, and have been by far and away the most approachable and helpfull towards the channel (their prices are also good as is the service)...
Thanks for the update I will have a look 👌
Loving The Megatron! Where can we get one please Jon?
hey dibbs was bought in chinese warehouse store in lanzarote.
Should I try gtechniq ceramic coating next?
why not mate yes.. if you are happy with a brand this is a really cool thing and like you continue to explore it.
Would you recommend claying the wheels before applying the ceramic coat?
Of course
Great video as always, don't know now if I should use this or the carbon collective platinum wheel
Forensic Detailing Channel Is carbon collective platinum wheels not C5 rebranded?Sure I've read this on a forum in the past.
no.. this is my understanding as always could be wrong but anyway.. so the underlying chemical that a lot of the ceramics use is a patented product that has many applications beyond automotive coatings its produced by a large indian chemical manufacturer....
Simon Bach You throw them away after application.
thank you.
How many cloths/towels would you advise for a set of wheel application / coating on a vehicle?
I have never done it before, and I dont want to screw up, by not using sufficient towels.
Would you still use this product now or is there something new to the market cheers
see best alloy wheel coating video kev where I compare a few
@@ForensicDetailing cheers I’ve just got new wheel, not fitted yet as waiting on the better weather.
Once u have applied the c5 can u then use fallout remover when u next come to clean the wheels?
You likely won't need to, a decent car soap will do the job without much trouble.
Merci
thanks for a great video Jon, due to the characteristics of C5 is the buffing cloth trashed after each wheel? or cleanable?
In my opinion and cloth used to buff should be thrown away or relegated to sort of engine bay or those crappy jobs.. not for buffing on paintwork again.. Imo.. others disagree I did a video on this called thrashing microfiber cloths with ceramic coatings
@@ForensicDetailing, pretty much as I thought, definitely relegated, thanks for your reply.
@@ForensicDetailing review the video, all makes sense, thanks.
(factor in your time cost of coating etc)
Same when you see these 200 hour details being done on cars. thats not really a viable thing to be spending that long as a chargeable service because its only 20 man hours to strip prep and respray the entire car.
not all detailing is real.
Would you have to polish the wheels if they are brand new wheels plus the wheels are pvd Chrome thanks great video ✌️🇨🇦
Saw your video today, want to apply it myself
May I ask if I can use any iron remover on those wheels after coated ?!
Before not after
I know that people have had problems, with lower end products.
And that comes off with a prewax.
think most of the "consumer" non professional ceramics can be machined off without wet sanding..
The pull of the glove haha OMG that wheel brush, must purchase right now! Whats the durability time on this product john i didn't quite catch it?
Where did you get the big wheel brush from at 3:09 john?
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber
tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and
safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put
that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding
underneath..
Once applied and its built up contamination you can indeed use some autoglym magma to decon the alloy,.
what sort of prep do you do for areas with minor wheel rash if at all, or perhaps a deeper small area dent?
hmm I would suggest refurd.. Or else whats like the point in protection the condition of an alloy wheel if it needs refinishing? not sure.. other than this stay away from damage if the clearcoat is scratched away. you could just ceramic over it but it will be hard to buff.
@@ForensicDetailing thanks.. so bad wheel rash has to be fixed..sanded smooth repainted and then clearcoat then ceramic
@@pcgrova7198 I think so mate or what are you trying to protect? a bad finish.. protection is there to maintain a good finish.
@@ForensicDetailing agreed
Did you apply the coating calipers?
Any idea what effect this would have on black matt finished wheels? I am struggling to find a product that is OK for matt as most say they add some form of shine, again great review, when you get to look at paint sealants would be interested to see what you think of AMMO Reflex combined with AMMO skin, I am finding them really good but they are all I have used so have no bench mark. Cheers Neil
Ive never used on a matt finish mate but it shoudl be fine.. I would run it past gtechniq support to be sure.
I don't know mate... But if they used a strong caustic acid wheel cleaner it might degrade it a bit more...
@@ForensicDetailing Thank you much appreciated.
Hi John I love your videos! Just a quick questions, whats the brush that says "megatron" on it, its not linked, I would really love to get my hand on one!
I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber
tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and
safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put
that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding

Ah damn! Really want one, looks absolutley perfecT!
How about on matte black wheels ??
How long will it last.
3-12 months, hard question to answer lots of variables.
Any coatings for polished aluminum w/ no clear coat?
should be able to use fk1000p on it.. there are specialised metal coatings with some detailing range.. I think generally ceramic dont bond great to it.. but thats only what ive read.
Thanks!
Hi. Great video, like the channel very much. Did you find the Gtechniq applicators some place good???
Well..... How does it hold up? Easy to clean?
so far its making a difference yes but its only been about 3-4 weeks... so interested to see results after 3-6 months and then beyond...
So after application is it ok to clean the wheels with something like BH wheel cleaner? Thanks
wait for the full cure for a week Keith.
Thanks Jon, pretty much what I was thinking but not having used any ceramic coatings just wanted to confirm........Thanks
Please point me towards the tommee tippee brush video
sainsburys mate :)
Forensic Detailing Channel thanks! I mean which video was it you showed it in, picking up the microfibre pile? I've been looking for ages still haven't found it 😔
i think it was the 3rd part of the M3 3 stage polish video mate
Thanks a billion! It's 16 minutes in 👍
Why wheel brush was you using for the face
Always a pleasure to watch your videos :) Keep em coming!
Hi John,
Nice video again ,and really nicely timed for me,as I'm about to do the wheels off protection on my M4.
I dont know what the OEM weights are mate.. my advice is speak to BMW and ask for the exact torque for the nuts and do them up a little bit lower and they should know where the OEM weights are from as well mate... also put some copper grease on them when you put them back on..
It was the tightening up of the locking wheel nut that was my main worry, getting enough purchase on it to do it up to 140nm.....
Hi john going to apply this sometime this week but don’t have a garage any tips
check weather forecast. avoid applying if theres rain or wind or any adverse weather conditions. If you can get the car on axels so you can get all the wheels off the car, get it applied. let it set, put alloys back on very carefully. then leave alone and dont drive it for 24 hours. thats all gonna help.
I was wondering can this product be used on polished wheels that are not lacqured?
Can you please post a link to the polishing cone that you used?
I have always used Jet Seal from CG. I have chrome wheels. Next time I take them off I will probably use Opti Seal from Optimum
Can you use bilt hamber auto wheel after applying this please?
yes
@@ForensicDetailing would the auto wash damage the GTECHNIQ c5 coating as the auto wheel is very strong cleaner?

Hi mate. I've just purchased a set of genuine BMW 403m wheels freshly powder coated.. should I apply the c5 armour before I get the new tyres fitted to the rims? I guess it'll be easier this way?. Many thanks
Your opinion will be much appreciated..
Lee
I have actually been looking into buying this.
Btw what it the best tire, rubber and trim restorer?
Thanks Jon! Will do it that way 👍
I used McKee's 37 wheel coating last fall and while it kept the face of the wheels clean, the machined area of the barrel has some pitting.
