Hi Janey! I love your channel, I’ve learned so much from you! I actually went to Summer Winds Nursery in Novato a couple weeks ago and was looking for Heliotrope and the person at the garden center gave me a huge warning that I wanted to pass on to you. He said it’s extremely toxic to dogs. It killed one of his customers dogs in a matter of hours after ingestion so they don’t carry it anymore. Just wanted to give you and other viewers some knowledge that was passed on to me. I love seeing Monty running around and would hate to see something happen to him

    • @kater8730
      @kater8730 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I agree, I stopped buying them because of my dogs. I think they are attractive to dogs because they smell good whereas other toxic plants that don't smell so strongly are not as attractive for dogs to eat.

I am certainly not one to comment as your ideas always seem perfect. I do wonder though if you ever considered putting the pots that are in front of the zig zag garden up on the patio. You can enjoy them more and it will add an element of height variation. By keeping them in front the zig zag design is lost. I don’t let a day go by without watching your wonderful channel so please don’t misunderstand my comment as negative on your choice. Your the best

I am bummed for ya those beauties, were looking so lovely and obviously happy in them pots. We had something similar happen and when I got half out, after wrasling, with em, yes wrasling, legs around arms deep in the ferns. My hubby came out and said lets just dump em behind the garden shed for now. Well, it rained and rained earlier this year and voila now we have a nice bunch of rooted in ferns and coleus, possibly some flowers too! lol, oh the scope of things, Happy Gardening DPWR Family!

If you have a sawsaws, you could have cut the roots half off those supertunias and buzzed the plant into quarters and transplanted somewhere. I saw a man use a✂️sawsaws, as well, to cut around stone pavers, then lift them, dig out the perfect sod square, and put the paver back at lawn level. Thank you for all you share. Jason is getting the gardening bug.

Your Pink Cashmeres were clearly very happy. It is surprising just how rooted a relatively small plant can become. Good reminder for all of us not to let our containers go too long without removing plants. As for heliotrope, I had a similar experience over 30 years ago up at Buchart Gardens in Canada. We got out of our car and instantly smelled something wonderful. I commented to my husband and someone overheard me. She pointed to the heliotrope that was used as a bedding plant in the parking lot and I've loved it ever since. It's always in my deck pots. I'm not sure why it's not more popular but I do have a local garden center that always grows lots of it. I've never used it as a bedding plant but maybe it's worth a try this year...

May I share what I do when I want to empty a pot. 2 days before I water it a lot until the day of the unpoting usually it works. If it doesn't then get my hose out on plug it into the plant it a bit messy and muddy but i get the job done easy.

Janey, I know you hear this all the time, but I learn so much from you! I think maybe you learned how to break information down into easy to understand pieces from your time as a PT. I also learn from just watching you work, how you organize your tasks, and keep your supplies in your wagons, and methodically just stick with the task until you are finished. I’m in Texas, so have similar issues with intense heat and drought, but for the pat few years, we have had below freezing temperatures for days at a time, rather than the occasional dip in temperature. I so wish I had the benefit of your tutelage years ago when I had the strength and stamina to make a beautiful garden! I, too love heliotrope, and wanted to tell you that the fragrance is popular in many perfumes! L’Heure Blue, Blue Grass, Poison, l’Aire du Temps, and many others. It’s a winner! And so is Jason!A man who is strong and cheerfully helps gets a gold star!

Good idea! That tool is one of my favorite since it lets me accomplish things that would otherwise be impossible! ❤

I recently dug out two older lavender plants from their pots, and boy was that a workout! I felt like some kind of large animal veterinarian! I agree about getting more tired in windy conditions. Not sure why, but it is no fun.

Love that you use pot feet! Lifting the pots allows better drainage and airflow! ACE GARDEN TIP! Thanks Janey!
Re: Helioteope - I smell the vanilla. My Mom smells cherry pie. 😂 Either way - the fragrance is heaven! Mine on the east coast are annuals and love morning sun until around 1pm.

I received the T-shirts that I ordered from your shop. They are WONDERFUL; so soft and light weight.

I also adore the smell of heliotrope. I started some from seed this year. I’m brand new to starting flowers from seed. How old is your dog? I just got a puppy who I want to be my gardening companion (next year). He’s only 10 weeks old. I also cannot deal with wind. 🤣

A good way to get such rootbound plants out of the pots is to divide the plants in half or quarters, even if you don’t get all the way to the bottom.

I made a few pots of these for my sons outside wedding. These and Lantana are my new favorite. Well other that bubblegum supertunias.

You should root prune the pink cashmere and plant it in the ground .. good experiment

💜 heliotrope… mine overwintered in a pot zone 9b California
A hori hori knife or bread knife help to separate rootball from sides of pot THEN tipping it and pushing up thru the drain hole, with a stick /bamboo steak/screw driver, you get the idea 🤓

The heliotropes look so beautiful, if I could get my hands on some. Blooms and smell are a plus but I’m in love with the foliage.

I discovered heliotrope last year and loved it, I find it quite hard to find here in France but I love it ! It seems it was used to make perfume

I’m loving the zig zag planter so much more now! Like you I was not a fan at first. Have you considered painting your white pots the same green as your front door? I like the high contrast of the white against the black but the green might be nice too. Either way will look great!
