If Rivals of Aether 2 takes off it's because this game is polished, fun to play, has functional online, and has 'indie collab' potential like the previous entry. There is no such thing as a Smash Killer, but perhaps we finally found a Smash 'Rival'.
I haven't even touched this game yet, but I can tell just by watching that it is more fun than any smash game other than melee. The speed and movement is similar to melee, but there isn't quite as much mechanical depth. Which for newer players or smash players that didn't play melee is probably good. You can be fast and do some cool stuff without having to devote a ton of time

@@toolazytobeoriginal4587 the clone comment makes sense. They even have the stock and percentage system. Almost a straight copy. Not that it's a bad thing. With Nintendo mostly catering to casuals with the newer versions of smash, it's good to have more options
@@philmur18 but that's not really what a clone is. A clone copies every aspect of a property without adding anything and just sells it. The percentage system is just a piece of the game. It and other things that you see in a ton of other "smash clones" are things that while they may have started in one game series, became a genre staple. Plus, even smash isn't a wholely original game. Shields? Grabs? Jump lag? Hitstun? Games are a process of taking things from others and putting your own spin on them, whether that be through changing how they work, using them in places where they haven't been used before, or combining them with other mechanics.
Plus, a ton of the people who use either term use it as a way to avoid saying anything of substance about it.
@toolazytobeoriginal4587 Normally that would make sense, but nobody who uses the term "clone" in gaming usually means an exact copy. Terms kinda take on their own meanings in different communities. I guess if you are a stickler for words only being used with their exact, original meaning I could see that bothering you though. A bunch of words have had their meanings tweaked throughout the years though. Just look at olde English compared to present day English.
I love RoA2. I hope the game gets at least 5 years of support. Round the roster to 30. Make a lot of fun side modes. Expand the story. There's so much potential. Like, imagine if all potentially 30 characters are super unique and fun and like, it's unbelievable. Game's already very addicting (in all the right ways), and the bigger it gets, the more it'll pull me and other people in. Love seeing an original platform fighter that doesn't try to rely on being yet another crossover to succeed. I just love this franchise so much. It's awesome seeing a lot of people loving it too.
The roster will hopefully become bigger when they add workshop

Yes, they're going to iterate on it on PC until they feel like it's ready, then expand to console.
Wouldn't it have been better to just wait and fully release it? These incremental additions destroy hype. Better to take longer and present a complete package - as NASB.
@jamiecal11 Yeah, as much as I'd like to play this with my son on our living room TV downstairs using our Switch or PS5, I'd like the game to do well. Launching a slick and fully developed game on the consoles is the most important. We'll live with playing it on our own respective computers over Discord for now.

I love the original rivals, it's my most played game in steam. I should buy this one.
You won't regret it. Gameplay feels buttery smooth, character buffs feel great, graphics look cleaner that I could've imagined, and rollback netcode feels smooth as always, all $20 with free DLC along the way.
It really depends if you like what they have added, it is very much a change in the gameplay style, I would say its not so much a sequel as a step in a different direction. Nevertheless, the game is very good, I wouldn't have expected anything less from the Rivals team.
online is way better in this one but honestly i love the og way more than this, the addition of shield makes the game feel slow and generic doesn’t feel as much about movement and spacing.
As another rivals 1 guy, this game is great. I have a few gripes, but the game is awesome.
Did you buy it yet? Its 100% worth. Im new to the Rivals stuff but knew about and watched rivals 1 content and im loving rivals 2. Super addicting. Can't wait for more champs to come to the game.

really happy to see the love for rivals 2, but i wish this same love had been given to rivals 1. it had most of the same tech and was just as hype. heres hoping rivals 2 keeps its foothold this time. its well balanced, fast paced, and polished. something mvs and nsb cant say
I think the artstyle probably helped rivals 2 alot. Rivals 1s pixel art is good, but pixel art as a whole tends to be treated as "indie" and thereby making the game easier to write off. Plus rivals 2 just released with quite good timing.
Right now I still prefer 1 just for the amount of characters and it feels more polished. Hope this gets on par with it soon.

I have barely played melee since I purchased ROA2. Rivals 2 is amazing.
All this goodwill towards Rivals 2 makes me optimistic for the future of Platform Fighters.

I really love Rivals 2. Honestly the second best platform fighter behind melee. It destroys ultimate in too many categories. The only thing ultimate has over rivals is roster size. Melee will forever be king but I am super happy to have an actually good alternative to melee. Plus if you want to play melee but the tech scares you, start with rivals 2. It wont be exact but it will help with the fundamentals.
game wise true, but ult does have the bigger community and ease of using consoles for IRL tournies. i could run rivals 2 brackets right now at my local if it was on Switch but im gonna be building a few small PCs to run SteamOS to have rivals locals :/ i really do love everything else about this game more than smash ult completely though
@@tashi321 pretty much any pc with at least 16 gb of ram can run this game. but do invest in a pc if you want to play this game becomes console release is coming in a year or 2 so not really that soon

I'd also argue Ultimate beats this game in single-player content, but I know more will be added later on.

I don't think this game could replace melee. It's as fast, but not as mechanically deep. I would happily watch this over any smash game besides melee though
@philmur18 i agree it's not as mechanically deep, but it's worth mentioning any mechanical depth in smash is accidental, and rivals more than makes up for that with how rich the secondary gameplan style for each character is. Not to mention the smash scene gets less than zero support from Nintendo. This game understands fighting games, it's made for the competitive plat fighter scene, and every new character that comes out will be healthy for the game, and if it isn't it WILL be changed. The roster is balanced enough that it would never need a change ever, but it'll probably get some tweaks anyway because the devs care THAT much. All that and more is way more valuable than simple mechanics

Are you going to keep doing Coinboxes with Rivals 2? I don't want this game to get ignored by content creators who have the means like NASB2 did. We got our two Slimeboxes, but then it was just kind of gone after that. And Rivals 2 seems like a much more consistent game that it's worth keeping around in the long run, imo.
Stop calling rivals as a smash killer and a rival instead treat rivals of aether as a good game as a whole for both casuals and compatitive but casual comes first always

This game is good for people who found ult disappointing too. It has the speed and some of the mechanics of melee that smash has strayed away from with brawl and onwards. This game doesn't require as much tech skill to be good like melee does though. It is like a good middle ground

Well, it depends on what you're looking for. Way less gimmicky, already established franchise, high counterplay to 0 to death combos if you know what you're doing, so no, nothing like NASB. I should preface that the game mechanics might be hard to master but it is very satisfying to play and watch at all levels IMO

It’s definitely a lot more thought out than nasb 2 even. A lot of the truly degen stuff you saw in nasb is designed out of the game. But it’s the kind of game where you have to enjoy the combat rather than the characters being presented. They’re all original designs after all

What's different about this one compared to the first game?
2nd has shields, ledges, grabs, and special variants of getup, ledge, and pummels. It’s also a tad slower but that’s to be expected when shields are introduced.

This is way more like melee unlike rivals 1 which felt only a little like melee and more like 64. It pretty much is the speed if not faster/slower depending on what you do than melee

this is all i wanted from smash ultimate….i wanted melee like mechanics. i just didn’t want all the tech to be hand breaking hard to execute

It feels great to play
Smash games have a bunch of bad decisions that competitive players sort of just have to deal with, and for every game since Melee, it's felt very underwhelming to do your best to improve, only to be met with dissappointment that only a narrow range of strategies and playstyles actually work in practice when people are playing to win. Melee exists and it has a ton of good aspects to it, but the game is janky as hell, and it feels very bad to get into if you aren't willing to put many, many hours into it. Add to that how poorly Nintendo treats the idea of playing Smash at a high or even mid level, and you have a recipe for disappointment.
There have been other platform fighters that have come out, but they have all been pretty bad in one way or another. NASB and NASB2 were shovelware games that were never going to get enough dev time or care to make them work out in practice, and Multiversus is a joke of a platform fighter made by devs who are constantly adding mechanics from Smash because their design for the game is fundamentally broken.
The closest we've had is Rivals of Aether. It's a game that works and is fun. It's managed to keep a competitive scene alive for the past decade, despite its relatively small playerbase, and the devs have a track record that shows a deep understanding of the genre. The only issue was that the style of game that R1's gameplay style didn't really appeal to Smash players very much, since it was hyper-aggressive with few defensive options. Now, with Rivals of Aether 2, they've made a platform fighter in a style that Smash players are genuinely having a ton of fun playing, and it feels very modern, unlike Melee. Basically, people are hoping that this can be their new main platform fighter, instead of Super Smash Bros.

It's competitive Smash Ult and Melee together but without any problems and restrictions you get on playing both of the games. With updates, upcoming variety, workshop, has rollback, competitive support and lastly a new fresh breathe of air in platform fighters.
