Interesting, I’m 56 and I do five sets of 20. I’ll increase this to 10 sets as you have inspired me. I don’t have military experience but I do a lot of physical labor on my farm.
Kudos, man. I'm 56, too and before my rotator cuff injury at 54/55, I was doing 100 / day, sometimes 120. I think many years of pulling 250 lb patients from gurneys to CT tables snd back, all by myself, caused a lot of degeneration which, when I started doing push-ups, shredded the tendons and caused the damage. Thankful for a successful surgery and PT and it's GTG- full range of motion, pain free and strong, but just to be safe, I now do inclined push-ups so it's less stress on the joint, but still builds strength, and can help get those pesky lower pecs, too.
I’m almost 63 and have been working out religiously since the 7th grade. There was only maybe, 1 or 2 years in my 20’s that I didn’t. However I started noticing my health deteriorating so I thought, forget this and began again, never stopping. I tried that push up routine yesterday 12/25/23 and it felt amazing! I haven’t done pushups in many years because it has been less stress on my back doing just bench presses! Chadd, your suggestion of doing 5 push ups, rest 1 minute then do 5 more push ups, for a total of 10 sets will be added to my workout routine! Thank you! God Bless!
Thanks Chadd, I've been wayyyyyyyyyyy to F-ing lazy this year, can still put-out14-17 push-ups in a set a few times, but I need to push myself back to fighting-shape. Your advice I shall try and see how much I can move the volume bar in 2-3weeks. Merry Christmas everyone, stay alert, keep aware of the neighborhood and people when your out in public.
This is great advice if you are of combat age and maybe thinking of military service. I am over 60 and just happy I still take a shot at push-ups 4 times per week, 75 or so each session. I'm not entertaining fantasies of becoming Johnny Paratrooper any time soon though.
Sir you are an inspiration for me. Today I did 10 reps of 20 pushups in about 30 minutes. Im slowly doing dead hangs upto 15sec no pull-ups though. I am 21yrs old, 6ft 100kg. My goal is to become an JTF-2. Thank you for your time. Be safe, rise and shine.
Why are you going slow on the dead hangs bud? Any reason? I try to do a few sets a few times a week as long as I can hold, up to a minute. I'm 42. Is this advice out there to be cautious with them and build up slowly for safety that I've missed, or is it due to the weight difference? You have 30 kg on me and are taller so obviously they'd be a lot harder.
The state of our individual people (fat, unfit, distracted, stressed, mentally ill, addicted) is reflected in the state of society. I pray the American people can start to give a damn about themselves because everything starts with the individual. I was borderline obese, early 40s and turned things around in 5 years. Now I do weighted pushups 35 lbs 4 sets 10, 10, 9, 7 on pushup handles for extra depth. Not superstar level at all, and so many people are far beyond that, but for me it's something.
Chad I’m 65, but very physical, I have a bad left shoulder that is prone to dislocation. Can’t do the flat push ups, but I do 3 sets of 40 everyday before I shower. I do them using the sink counter in the bathroom so I’m more at a 45% angle, but it does help me keep the movement going. Thanks for the inspiration.
Had the same issues with shoulder dislocation until I started focusing on training rear delts best to train side and rear front usually gets enough if doing push-ups/bench press
Good info Chadd. I'm 57 and stay fit. Last week I included your strategy for increasing volume and did 12 reps of push-ups per set with 1 minute rest in between sets X 10 sets. Went unbroken no problem. I think your test is a good marker to see if you are making progress and where you are at. I'm going to increase by 2 reps per set until I hit failure, mark that and then continue work to push passed that. Good content and ideas here!
Good program. I started driving truck last year and realized after a bit that I had time to get some exercise in while being unloaded. Started doing sets of push-ups, body weight dips, and body weight squats on different days of the week. Worked it up to 10 sets of 17 in short order and finally decided I was in good enough shape to hit the gym again. That cost me zero of my own time cuz I was on the clock waiting to be unloaded anyway...just a few stares from the factory workers and other truckers. Haha!
I remember getting gas on a road trip and seeing a truck driver getting a workout in across the parking lot while he was waiting for his truck to fill. I thought it was awesome. Great to see a dude doing what he could to take care of himself in a few minutes of spare time. Way more respect for him than the guys who go to the gym just to stare at themselves in the mirror and hope other people notice them too.
Great video! I also add variation in hand position not only hands close or farther apart but one hand offset vertically rather than focusing on trying to have perfectly aligned positions on ground. Amazing how many different muscles get worked this way
I certainly appreciate the concept of combat readiness and physical effectiveness. I also, as an older man with physical limitations, have to consider real capabilities and appropriate strategies for maximizing effectiveness. Something as simple as getting yourself off the ground and back on your feet may require a different or multiple different techniques. By training these scenarios I have been able to find what works best for me and strengthen the muscle groups needed and increase my speed. Doing push-ups is great but you also need to train for potential real life situations. Full kit, up and move!
I agree 100% had a lame ass crash broke three ribs in a scapula took about 5 months before I could start calisthenics again. Absolutely you must hit it daily
I go from flat palms to fists sets, shoulder length and wide.. just in case I gotta knock some disgruntled individual out, so I don't damage my wrists .. Thank you Chadd and Chili 🙏 keep up the great work!
My 12 year old and I do this same method only we are doing Diamond Push ups and we incline our feet with each rep which puts the weight on the front end. Very difficult but the results are undeniable. Some things I learned in the Navy never die!!

Yes he did a video on pull ups last month I think. Go check it out. It has some good info. I don't struggle with them but I have been using some of the tips to help my wife with hers. It is helping.
I love pull-ups, I prefer them over weights for muscle mass, I started only being able to do 2 or 3. I did them every night, as many as I could do in two reps. Within two weeks I was doing 15 each rep. I then added 20 Lb to my backpack and repeated until I was doing 20 each rep in another two weeks. Two months later I was doing perfect muscle ups with 25lb weight added, 20 each rep. I prefer adding weight instead of repetitions, the gains are higher if you want to add muscle. Just keep at it every night and add a good protein drink after. It gets easier and easier. Don't get discouraged if you can only do one, that's where everyone starts. You probably know this, just saying what works for me. As far as form, no momentum. Completely down, break, completely up. Going slower is equivalent to adding reps.
Good plan 76 been doing push ups since 2019 I ruck and drop on the road at stops I do them actually you can do them anywhere. They are critical for combat effectiveness. Semper Fi.
That slow one is really good. Once you get in decent shape, try the slow one with the weighted backpack thingy. The key for me, after 64yrs of life and a couple of shoulder surgeries was to just get started back at it. Go slow at first but get 5 workouts in a week. You will be surprised at how quickly strength returns even to us seniors.
Hey Chad! Man, I love it when you demonstrate exercises for us. Great idea for 2 reasons: 1) it shows us how bad ass you really are underneath your humble demeanor, 2) I always learn something and get really inspired- which is a good thing. After this episode I got down on the floor and started doing pushups:) Thx Chad. Look forward to your new episodes for inspiration.
Nice variations. My favorite pushup these days is a deficit pushup with pushup handles stacked on bumper plates in my 50lb weighted vest. I’ve loaded those up to 100lbs before but it cuts the reps down so far that I can’t get enough volume so I find the 50 pounder works better.
Thanks for your excessive videos. In April I joined the gym and do a full body stretch every day on my off gym days. I am 46 and lifting more weights than I did in high school. I added pushups to my workout and you are so right.wow my push-up suck.I really have added this to my workout. Been at it for 2 weeks and they are getting much better thanks to you.
At 54, I'm finally improving my fitness. I've been slim or slightly overweight all my life, but if I push myself much at all, I get injured and have to stop training. I've tried many times to get fit with this result. I'm finally making real gains by only making very small increases to my reps, then doing that number until it's completely easy, then barely increasing again. It doesn't help that I separated my shoulder when I was 20.
I’ve found that spreading your fingers gives you an advantage. For me, it feels like my body weight is more evenly distributed; this has led to higher rep counts and better overall chest muscle activation.
Good video, at 68 doing an every other day workout seems to be fine for me. What ever anyones situation just don't stop moving. We should be able to save or carry your own butt out of a jamb and realistically take someone with you on your way out of that jamb. Stay ready.
I'm 62 I do a 15 minute plank then 75 good pushups. then 45 push ups then 35-45 push ups...lots of stretching lots of walking....very low carb diet ...I get told all the time how good I look but more important I feel great! Thanks Chadd for what you do!
That's crazy insane. You are a machine. I have to say I have trouble belive this. Especially the 15 minutes plank. A 5 minute plank is considered impressive. But hey who am I. Although I'm 50,been doing 40 push ups every morning, and the last 5 years 50 push ups amongst lots of running, skip rope, walking, weights. But I could never do 15 minutes plank, or 75 good push ups in a row.
When I first started working out in 2009 I was weak, couldn't do many of any push ups or pull ups. Wanted to get good so I did them every day. Now I'm back to 3 sets of 20 pull-ups and the same or more of push ups. If you suck at something just do it every day, I swear you will become great at it.
Six years ago, I was at a gun show and long story short. I saw a guy wearing a plate carrier who literally wouldn’t have been able to run across the street to save his life. In that moment, I decided the most important aspect of me being prepared is having the physical capabilities to do what I need to do, very next day I signed up for jiu jitsu. I’ve been training jiu jitsu and judo and working out ever since. For many reasons that has literally been the best decision I have ever made in my entire life. STAY HARD MOTHERFUCKERS
Gave it a try on Thursday, intending to run and while wearing a 20+lbs vest. When I started running, my left calf started cramping. Then, I watch your video with John Lovell, and at the end you say cramping is for [pansies].... boy did I feel sheepish. But I did the workout on my lunch break today BEFORE watching the video with Mr. Poet. A few caveats; No vest this time. Until I can run it without cramping, I will not do a vest. Then, we got a snow storm yesterday, so no running. No assault bike in our house, so I did a stationary bike. Enough with the caveats. Total elapsed time: 46:30.
I live in Michigan and I love running in the snow. Helps to have the right layers and even more so to have Gore-Tex running shoes. The key is that you're just trying to get the time and the miles in and not trying to set any records. If there's snow on the ground, I usually shorten the distance and slow the speed and still end up with a better workout than my usual run.
@@jon27d i have run a few times this week, and I am going for just easy, conversational pace for a certain time and ignoring the distance.
Thank you! God Bless!
Merry Christmas 🎄 everyone
Merry Christmas skid Marks
Always take the hard road you'll be glad you did
Words to live by 💪🏽
Hard road equals discipline.
Back away from them pies bubba
Unless it's with women. Avoid the hard road.
Appreciate the tips. I love simple workouts that don’t require going to the gym. God bless
hello, thanks for the tips. You are so correct about losing the reps once you stop doing push ups. its so crazy. I like the 10 rep suggestion.
This is very helpful for when im going to Navy OCS, I've always had problems consistently performing pushups well!
Inclines are great for people with shoulder issues.
Had the same issues with shoulder dislocation until I started focusing on training rear delts best to train side and rear front usually gets enough if doing push-ups/bench press
You can do a full-can shoulder workout.... Squat University has some good videos about shoulder instability
1. Volume
2. Below parallel
3. Weighted
4. Time under tension, slow as possible to near collapse, then explode up.
10 sets, 4 times a week
73 here. Inspiring video. Getting back in shape and keep hearing you - "Don't give pain a voice." Thank you.
Great video! I also add variation in hand position not only hands close or farther apart but one hand offset vertically rather than focusing on trying to have perfectly aligned positions on ground. Amazing how many different muscles get worked this way
Yeah buddy that Creatine is good and really can feel the difference. Messages heard loud and clear! Thanks again Chad Wright. 🇺🇸
Love this advice, I’m on week three of sticking to it, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for sharing your training to increase push ups ...I was a 800 meters runner... did a lot push up and also pull ups...sure i am gone try today.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!🎅
One of my new favorite channels
Don’t pinch your beard when you hit bottom my dude !
Just building my home gym this year. Advice really helped since I’m starting over. Thank you
I agree 100% had a lame ass crash broke three ribs in a scapula took about 5 months before I could start calisthenics again. Absolutely you must hit it daily
Another goal to achieve! Thank you!
Appreciate the wisdom...no matter how old I get...will always be physical active
Chad, could you please make a warm up for running video?
Too lazy to search YT little Jimmi?
@@jacksoncornbreadmcbride6763 😂
I go from flat palms to fists sets, shoulder length and wide.. just in case I gotta knock some disgruntled individual out, so I don't damage my wrists ..
Thank you Chadd and Chili 🙏 keep up the great work!
Thank you Chadd!
My 12 year old and I do this same method only we are doing Diamond Push ups and we incline our feet with each rep which puts the weight on the front end. Very difficult but the results are undeniable. Some things I learned in the Navy never die!!
im 50 and i did 10 set of 16 defeceit pushups tonight in 15 minutes. ill do 17s in a few days. then i hit 3 sets of 20 to 30 dips. i feel pretty good about that. ill have 20 in a couple weeks. im glad you put this up ,appreciate it!
Yep. That will come in handy in combat 😅. Nuff said
Hey Chad,I’d like start off by saying thanks for the variety of content you put out. Guns, gear, America, people, running, survival, etc… Lots of stuff, I LOVE IT. You probably don’t remembertalking to me at dinner before an ultra in KY. I asked you to put out a video with Chilli doing the 20 meter Pacer test for my P.E. students You put it in your phone. Little kids and high school students need to see what it looks like when someone tries hard. I’ve ran with all my class until I hurt my Achilles and now I am messed up. I’ll be fixed one day. It will do my students good to see two men compete and have healthy trash talk Thanks man…NUFFSAID
Have you done a similar video on how to Get Better At Pullups ? If you haven’t, please do, I really struggle with pullups.
This is such a great video, thanks for sharing Brother Chadd!
Appreciate this. Been doing pushups everyday working on improving for my ACFT next month.
I love these different styles of "ye ol' push up" ~ THANK YOU !!
You are so right in this one!
Some good ideas here
Thank you.
Thanks, Chadd! Merry Christmas!
Damn! Thanks for the video! so glad I came across this channel!
Thanks brother serving in Fort Bliss right now and need to work on my hand release pushups
Good video, at 68 doing an every other day workout seems to be fine for me. What ever anyones situation just don't stop moving. We should be able to save or carry your own butt out of a jamb and realistically take someone with you on your way out of that jamb. Stay ready.
Those push ups are starting to show. Look a little more jacked lately. God bless everyone , Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
@@designrdan I know it took me a few years to work up to 15 minutes.
Cool video . Good info .
Thanks for the tips!
Did push up for first time in a month’ thanks for getting me back on track - been walking n staying fit tho’ so it weren’t so bad
Thank you for the fitness content, Chadd. Wife bought me a pull-up bar for Christmas after she overheard me listening to one of your videos.
Chadd your beard touches the floor before your chest.
Cheers mate. Keep up the good vids. 👍
But those guys need the gun the most. The old, sick the disabled... it's the one thing they can use to defend themselves
Most of our sidewalks and roads still have ice and frozen snow all over them. Hazardous as all heck. I am just trying to not slip while running. That is my main focus.
@@gavinstrawn6833 awesome man! That's it exactly. No one needs to get hurt and no records will be set but it sure beats sitting on your butt at home! Some of my favorite pictures are ones of my eyebrows, eyelashes, and neck gator coated in ice after running in single degree temperatures! Maybe I'm a little nuts but I'm going to enjoy it while I'm young enough to do it 👍
@@jon27d I love the ice build up! My kids laughed their heads off when they saw me at the end of me run.
Thank you for this very good explanation
Love these videos! Thank you!😊
Great exercise. God bless.
Thanks man. Very helpful!
I appreciate you put out this good simple information that's easily actionable by anyone.
63 and after shoulder and back injury , it's tough to make 10 sets , good job Chadd
Jesus is King! 👑
yes Revelation 19:11-16 says he is Faithful and True KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
Christ is King
Oh Yeah!!!!
The letter J is only a few hundred years old therefore His name isn’t “jesus” … He was born a hebrew with a hebrew name … His name is YAHUSHA (it means YAHUAH/YAH is our salvation). Wake up yall ❤
Amen
You are a constant inspiration man. Thank you.
Excellent. Thank you
This was really helpful thank you 🙏
I’m 40 yrs old, USMC 0311 grunt and proud that I’m in better shape now than I’ve ever been - my goal this year is four sets of fifty pushups at a decent pace.
Thank you Chadd.
Great info! Thanks!
Good job and information brother
Ive been working on pushups. 61 and weak as heck in the specific muscles you need for pushups but improving.
Me too brother. 62 years old here. But I’m working on it. Stay hard!
Monday Thursday pushup and air squats 30 x 15 on the minute Tuesday and Thursday minimum of 30 max 60 on pullups while walking on treadmill at least 7 reps. Cardio every day .
Thank you, Brother. This will take me to the next level. This is extremely important content. You have gained muscle mass quickly from where you were recently. I love Andy and his products. His protein powder is the best on the market. I'm super excited to use the creatine.
