Parrotlets remind of little toys. They are so cute. And, they have such over the top personalities. They really are the Chihuahuas of the parrot world!😊
They are small and feisty like chihuahuas! I had a female parrolet who was half the size of my English budgie but she would bully and chase the budgie all the time when I let them out of the cage!🙄
I got Benny when he was four weeks old and finished hand feeding him. He is two and a half now. He is so incredibly bonded with me and the sweetest little guy. He has only bitten me three times and all three times it was my fault because I trapped him in a corner or bumped him, but all he was doing was kettin* me know he was there an$ to be careful. He does the typical bird nip, which doesn’t hurt, if he gets mad, which is rare. All he wants is to be with me and I love him so much. Most people think they either can’t talk or they can only say a handful of words. Benny can say anything and everything, and picks up words and phrases without me teaching him, just by listening to me talk. He is such a smart little guy. I had my first parrotlet many many years ago and he was a great talker, too. Benny tells me when he wants something. He will say, Want some skritches when he wants his head scratched. He will say, Wanna come out, hen he wants out of his cage. He will say, Want some yummy, when he wants a bite of whatever I’m eating. He knows exactly what he wants and he tells me. Parrotlets are so much smarter than people think they are. All you have to do is spend a lot of time with them and talk to them all the time.
Wow, you and Benny are doing great! Yes, it is all about dedicating yourself to them and they give it back! I do love Parrotlets! They are amazing for being so small - big personalities! Loved reading about Benny, post more!
My Parrotlet always tells me where he wants to go and what he wants to do 😂. He is just like you describe- big personality and loving. He HATES being alone. Worried about the work of two parrotlets but if we get a second one should it be a male or female or does it not matter? Our little guy is 5 years old. I do not want them to breed or get hormonal but I didn’t know if two males would fight more. Thanks ❤
Gender won’t matter, but age will. If you can, get a adult, otherwise you’ll have to keep them in separate cages until the 2nd is about 10 months. It will be worth it though, your Parrotlets will be so happy!
I just got my first parrotlet about a month ago... piranha is the perfect word for her. She goes from being my super sweet little marshmallow Peep, to tiny yellow ball of anger in a split second. Which is why we've started also calling her The Mad Peeper. Even if I'm not invading her space, or asking anything of her, and she has plenty of toys to play with or destroy... she will just decide it's time for violence and run or fly at me with her beak open, latching onto whatever she can with her sharp little beaky. She got my neck pretty bad a few days ago - made it look like I had a bunch tiny hickies! I love her, but she is one crazy little tyrant! If she's on my head or shoulders, I gotta be ready for biting, and use a rope perch to get her to step down, unless I want cuts and bruises on my fingers!
How old is she? She may be going through puberty. It’s like their first hormonal surge and they can be boogers. Benny would nip my firearms every time he got near me. My arms looked terrible, but he finally got through it. He’s two and a half now and when he gets hormonal, maybe twice a year, it’s barely noticeable. He will get a little cranky so I just leave him alone. If he gets too moody he stays in his cage until he can be nice again. He loves to preen between my fingers and sometimes he’ll pinch a little too hard. I say, Be Nice, and he knows what that means and will stop. I taught him that by twisting my wrist throwing him off balance a little when he nipped too hard. He knows when I say that now to stop. They are sooooo smart. Just have to pay attention to their body language.
I’ve been told it’s best not to keep 2 Parrotlets because they may become territorial with the other bird… or bond with the other Parrotlet instead of their human. I’ve also been told it’s best to keep them in separate enclosures due to fussing over who’s the boss. Any thoughts?
I think that's a terrible myth out there. I've had a lot of people tell me that they put theirs together (after watcing my vids) and found that there were no issues once they saw that they got along. I have 132 videos with "Parrotlet" in the title. If you search on how many you can put together or "aviary" then you'll see that I've always kept 2 when they are breeding or a large aviary with 8 to as many as 16 when they are not. I watch, I offer a lot of food stations/food and they are thrilled. I don't know of any parrot that wants to be all alone, even the independent species want to hear other parrots around them. Cautiously and with a watchful eye, put them together. They will bond with you if you spend time with them and they will be healthier and happier.
I got my 2 5mo parrolets 3 weeks ago, as they have started to settle in. They groom each other feed each other sleep huddled but occasionally fight is this ok or will they need separation. No feet biting. One is definitely male not sur on the other yet as its so blue
HAHA lil velociraptors my 2 hate one another. My female is very mean to my male. They both love me and want to be on me alot. My female is velcro she stays on me all the time all over the house is I set her on the perch she will fly at my head and follow me if I leave the room. . She will sometimes be jealous if the male is on me and run him off. My male hangs out until he is ran off or wants to take a fly or investigate the foraging boxes or other birds cages. He hates hands and will not be touched except his beak. I have been working on that for 10 months. He is a very good talker and learns new phrases in about 2 weeks. If I had less of my others I would refill the cages with an entire flock of these lil nuggets

Chihuahuas… yes! Ouch! Afterwards I gave her a treat, then I was no longer cut!
Hehe I was reminded of small dogs too 😂 maybe also sausage dogs or jack Russells

They can be like having a two year old that needs a nap sometimes😄.
So true- either that, or I need a nap after Frenchie has had her way!

Have treats on hand and be patient. I know all to well! Almost all get past this phase. I’m hoping someone tells Frenchie!

@@ParrotBliss, thank you! Good information! 💛🦜💛
@@ParrotBliss, would it be safe to let my baby Parrotlet fly around with my budgies for company? My budgies are maybe a year old and younger.
I have a pair that I adore.. and they now have 3-4 chicks! Too afraid to really look.
How sweet! Since they love you, their babies will ❤️
As for my piranha here 🫱🦜
Yeah!
