Yvonne, for the long pieces of leather, get another matching template, and tape them together with masking tape that way you do not have a line break in the leather and can run it thru the machine in one pass.
A tip I have learned embossing leather strips for cuffs and collars for my husband. 1. Roll your leather piece through your machine front to back to get a deeper impression. 2. To not have such a distinct line, do not let your leather roll through the machine at the end/bottom of the piece where the embossing folder ends. I roll the leather forwards then back 2x for the 1st run. Then over lap my pattern and offset the folder over the pad so that it is not so thick and always remove my leather from the top on the 2nd run. I usually feed through the leather 2 times. forward-back-forward-back then move the piece of leather. Hope that makes since.
THANK YOU!!! You were one of the first videos I could find (after more than a dozen tries) which clearly and easlily showed this process, and had both a pleasant demeanor and delivery method! I am going to be trying this at home really soon!
Can you hear that?! It's my wallet crying from the inspiration I got from your video Yvonne, lol! Thanks so very much for stoking the craft fire in my belly!! When my embosser gets here, I'm going to hook my drill onto the handle to avoid the falling off issue, even if I have to 3d print an attachment 😃 I'm impatient too, so it's also for speeding it up 🙂😉
EMBOSSING and DEBOSSING are the processes of creating either raised or recessed relief images and designs in paper and other materials. An embossed pattern is raised against the background, while a debossed pattern is sunken into the surface of the material (but might protrude somewhat on the reverse, back side).
Wow what a great hack. I use a hydraulic press for embossing chrome tanned leather, but the pressures involved require metal die plates. I would never have guessed that veg-tan would emboss so well with such a cheap and simple hobby machine.....and cheap templates. Going to try this out.
I wanted a press like that to put my family Crest on coasters. I could only afford a crank press though. That leads to my question about centering on a coaster. Would you be able to tell me how I would do that and not have it move
Yvonne, just now seeing this! Love your videos. Its embossing (pokey up) and debossing (pokey down)... I think thats right but may have it backwards. At any rate, I'm sure you figured it out by now.❤
I have watched a ton of your videos. I love what you do. You are a girl after my own heart. I love the way you will just try anything, who cares what the warranty says. When it works, Yahoo! Keep on crafting, you do amazing things, and thanks for the videos. :)

Does it need to be raw leather? I upcycle leather from couches, jackets... whatever... so its already dyed, etc. Can I still use this method? Also, I have a Cricut Maker (2, not the newest one), which embosses, but you have to either create or purchase patterns, which isn't difficult, but a little more time consuming. You're skill set is so diverse and so polished, I'm a little jealous! But only in the best way 💗 that's why I chose to learn from you! Thanks for all the amazing videos. 2:10 the technical term for the "pokey uppy parts," is "the areas of releif." so in art anything that is i releif sticks out and anything that is depressed is pushed in.

For the swing clasps, look at Ohio travel bag. They are way cheaper than places like tandy, and the quality it just as good. Also a good resource for rivets and snaps.
Love your enthusiasm. I hope to catch it. I'm searching for embossing faux leathers and Sizzix Texture Rolls and also the Kraft-tex I think it's called heavy duty and thicker materials. Most not nearly as thick as the leather you are rolling through today. But along the same principle. I do worry that for the faux or vegan materials the embossing won't stay even after you've run it 2-3 times through the machine and it looks deep and tight. It could loosn or relax or what have you. I'm going to play with it a bit more. I broke 3 of my 3D brand new dies running through with the Texture material and using what should not have been a too tight or thick sandwich and if I removed just one lighter sheet it wasn't embossing at all let alone cutting. So I increased and I managed to get my favorite through 3 times and then just like that not but changed nothing and when I forced it enough I guess it warped them out of alignment and wouldn't work no matter what else I tried. So I ran two more different embossing dies through and again on the very first run they came out warpped. One so bad it was curled up. Since they are expensive yeah I need to figure out another approach. Anyway I think the problem was not with the dies or the machine but with the too thick and very very tough material. I couldn't get a good clean cut with one of my other dies with an experimental product that's a shelf liner type material but it did kind of emboss. Btw I have seen some people have great luck embossing or indenting with the thin dies that cut but are thin enough they do not cut through the leather all the way but leave a great impression just the same and looks embossed. Check out another leather embossing with an embossing machine I believe they used a Sizzix though. I loved the hearts they managed to stamp into the leather using that technique. I have heard of embossing with a lighter sandwich thick papers too so I could see how it would work well with the properties of leather if not better. Thanks for your demonstration today. Enjoyed it a lot and picked up quickly your technique over lapping to avoid the lines between mulitple run throughs to get the full length embossed. Great tips.
have you considered using a 3d printer to print your own patterns on to plastic backers? I don't know much about the materials, like if they would be strong enough to handle the pressing, but I've seen where they 3d printed a gun...so I'm assuming they can handle a fair amount of pressure/stress. You could even design the pattern so top and bottom match for easier lining up on larger pieces. I also just noticed this video is over a year old...so this may all be an old idea already for you :P Very cool tutorial though
Awesome! To avoid that blank spot at the top and bottom of the embossing, could you trim that blank edge off the embossing plate? Cut the plate down to the start of the design?
here I am using 9 or 10oz leather, but I have done very thin leather as well; it works on any leather that will fit through the machine :) hehe, my work area is my happy place!
The pokey upside is the embossing side, because to emboss is to create a raised pattern. I’m seeing people on TH-cam calling stamping a depression embossing but it is not. Though you can use stamps to emboss. ….anything that is raised is embossed.
Embossing is a raised design - a logo or other graphic image, for example - that is pressed into paper or card stock from underneath. Embossing requires two dies, a male and female die, thus creating more production steps and die charges. The raised area can have ink applied to it, foil applied, or it can be left unprinted/unfoiled. When an embossed area is not printed or foil stamped it is known as a blind emboss. Creating an embossing die is usually a one-time expense. Ask your Metzgers printing professional for details regarding how involved your die will be, the time involved and the related cost. Debossing is the opposite of embossing. With debossing, the imprinted design causes depressions in the material leaving a depressed (debossed) imprint of the image on the paper or cardstock. Letters raised on metal plate. Debossing impresses a die into the surface of the paper material.
I learn some of the coolest things from you that I've never heard of before! You also make me laugh a lot! You gave me some great ideas on how to enhance some of the things that I do and I am very excited to try them. Have you ever used the Craftaid leather embossing tools through the machine? I can't seem to locate mine right now (I have crafts all over the house, and really need a dedicated room for them!), but I have a few of those.
.. i love all of your videos! did you wet your leather first? I actually have a huge die cutting machine. IF you find dies for your little machine you can cut cardboard or thin plastic and you can make your own ( longer) embossing patterns for your corset pieces...
oooo, thats a very clever idea Ninja! I did wet the leather first; just a quick dampening; if you saturate the leather is squeezes a bunch of water out and makes a mess everywhere.
Hey, Maria! It depends on what you are doing; I use a lot of barge cement, water based contact cement, fabric glue, and super glue. If I think glue may not be enough I go in and reinforce with stitching or rivets. I hope this helps!
It seems to me that you can indeed win them all. Since this is your third machine, you should have plenty of those black plates lying around, so why not cut one of them a couple inches shorter and use that one whenever you need to overlap on both ends?
I'm sitting here laugh-crying from pokie-uppy side. While my sister was teaching my nephew how to feed himself, he was discovering eating with a fork and spoon. Hi I've just subscribed to your channel. Your tutorials are inspiring thankyou. For small pieces of leather could you use a pasta machine? X
Yvonne can o just emboss the leather and paint and antique it? Do I HAVE to tool it ?
I thought I alone thought of this with our cuttlebug! I only use 6oz or lighter vegtan. Its really hard on the embosser.

pokey uppie = emboss (or embossed) indented= deboss (or debossed)
Hi Yvonne, why don't you just cut of the border around the templates? Then you loose that line (I think) . Greetings from Belgium!
Embossing is a raised design - a logo or other graphic image, for example - that is pressed into paper or card stock from underneath.
