Aww man Toni, what a bussin video! All your points were peak, Parasyte is a certified classic, I’d give it a BOOOM and I’d give Battle Royale a DOOOM, great work, you cooked!
Ahhh, what a fantastic rant 😌 And damn, that hardcover edition of the Mountains of Madness, looks beautiful. Welp, I know what I need to add to my xmas wish list.
Great video, a lot of great Manga that I need to read. So happy that you enjoyed PARASYTE. It is definitely one of my favorite. I also got the Full Color edition. Looks great on the shelves. I will definitely add some to my TBR
I love the way that Kodansha designed the new Parasyte editions, they definitely stand out. Plus they weren’t too difficult to read like some other hardcover manga I’ve seen. Thanks for watching!
Call Of cthullu is great because it's a mystery that pieces itself together so well and cthullu is the heart of hp lovecraftiam lore. It's been a long wait. I'm glad you're getting into the manga adaptations. I also recommend the Hound and other stories. Pretty great reads, I'm slowly getting back into manga again.
I’ve actually read The Hound & Other Stories and I hated it lol. But that was like 5 years ago so maybe I need to give it another chance. I’m very excited to read the Cthulhu one though.
Regarding Battle Royal, slang in manga is such a pet peeve for me. It never stands through the test of times and while I understand localization to a certain degree i feel like it’s too much creative freedom taken by the translator. I cringed so bad when I read the latest Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You and they used “No Cap”. Seriously 😩 Really dampened my enjoyment of the series.
If your library has them or you find them for cheap check out the anthologies Neo Parasyte M & F. Short stories by different creators and one of them is done by Moto Hagio. They are not essential by any means but I enjoyed them for the most part.
I forgot about those! I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on them. There’s apparently also a spin-off called Parasyte Reversi, though I think that’s only available digitally for now
I also thought the Mountains of Madness was incredible. The story and artwork in that format were both stunning. I did end up picking up the other two in the smaller versions and read and enjoyed them, but would rebuy them in larger format instantly without thinking about it!
Battle Royale was the first manga that I ever read to completion. I loved it at the time, but I don't think I'd make it past the first volume now. It is indeed massive on pointless shock value, with a ton of SA for the sake of SA. Dear god does the author have serious fucking issues with women. Parasyte absolutely blew me aaway, and I read most of it in one sitting. In terms of pacing, it's the best manga I've ever read, and it never feels like it's wasting your time. It also does a lot that I hate most manga and anime will never dare to try. I absolutely love the mc, and likw you I can't recommend reading through the series enough. God I want to find more manga with its level of pacing. If you know anything else that nails its level of pacing, please share!
Wow if Battle Royale had been one of the first manga I ever read I definitely wouldn’t have gotten past volume two and I might have just given up on the medium altogether. I don’t really know if there’s anything that’s quite as well-paced as Parasyte honestly. It’s just clear that the author knew exactly what he wanted to do at the beginning, it never dragged or seemed aimless and was always consistent with its message. It’s kind of sad how rare it is to find a manga that does all these things so well.
@@tonireadsmanga I was a very different person when I read Battle Royale, I was all about darkness for the sake of darkness. I feel like everyone says that about Parasyte, it's why I'm a lot more into american indie graphic novels. There seems to be an endless amount of 2-8 volume series that are very well paced, and have very satisfying conclusions.
If only i could get star fruit books or glacier bay books without the extra shipping costs! Battle royale manga is just kind of disgusting 😅 although it was entertaining in parts, i didnt keep it, I still prefer the film and novel. And I've loved all of Gou tanabe. I can't wait to read the call of cuthulu
I read Battle Royale earlier in the year and I didn't think it was worth the love people give it. The dialogue translation was terrible, the art was a surprise in a bad way, the first half was the best part for me but the last half lost me big time especially with a character that just wouldn't die. I do understand why this would be a guilty pleasure for people though.
I'm too much of a scaredy cat to have read any true horror this october but glad to see that you had some (mostly) good horror reads in October 🙂!! Sometimes reading manga version of novels really do end up being disappointing because of the poor choices they make for what to focus on or cut 😥 I know you probably have a HUGE tbr but any hints on when you're gonna start Your Forma? I hopefully don't want to come across as pushy please take your time. (you already bought the series. Thank you 😭💕) I'm just so curious 😆
Ahh thanks for reminding me! I tend to forget about my light novels but I’m still very much looking forward to reading it! I’ll probably put it on my reading resolutions list for 2025.

Oh yes, I’ve definitely noticed publishers using more and more slang in their translations lately and it pulls me out of the story every time.

I've never read the Battle Royale manga but the film is a cult classic and I would always recommend watching that over reading the manga lol
I’ll have to watch it soon so I can compare them
❤❤❤
I loved Parasyte the anime. Migi and Shinichi remind me of Vemon and Eddie. I love dynamics like that
It was definitely interesting to read about them reluctantly working together! I’ve never seen Venom but I can understand the comparison for sure.

Yep, I agree that BR is disgusting. I think it could have been adapted well as a manga but in this case the execution just wasn’t there.

Oh yeah, I also didn’t like the art at all even though it was pretty detailed. There was just something off about it.
