    Here in Texas, an EMR and an EMT can do the same things on the truck on a volunteer level. Please volunteer if you can, it's a fun way to learn a new skill and help your community at the same time, without the CE requirements.

    I'm a junior in high school doing my first ride-along next week, and I can't wait! I've had this dream for years now, and the more I learn about the job, the more excited I get. Starting next semester, I'm going to start spending most of my time at our local community college taking the pre-reqs, so I can take the NREMT my last semester of highschool and go straight to taking paramedic and firefighter classes! It's a long road ahead, by the looks of it, but I honestly can't wait.
    UPDATE: I’m in paramedic school now! How’s that for progress?

      @@86aidan31 Paramedic school, baby! I passed my NREMT on schedule, got a job right out of highschool, and after a year or so of employment (and dealing with some intermittent, almost career ending health problems) I decided I’d go for gold and become a paramedic.
      As of right now, I’m 4 weeks into the class and having a great time! Labs start next week, and clinicals soon after, which is what I’m really hyped about. 560 hours is the requirement, but I’m hoping to put in some more time to make up for how little time I spent doing 911. I’m spending basically every waking moment right now on EMS, listening to podcasts, watching videos, reading case studies and reviewing class material from back in Pathophysiology… This is everything to me right now. I’m more in love than I’ve ever been.

    You should do a video on basic GSW or gun shot wound treatment or how to help and or stabilize or provide basic treatment if you're the only one on scene or only one who can provide any care with this day and age with everything going on sad to say but I think everyone should have basic knowledge of GSW treatment if God forbid a shooter situation takes place or hunting accident, something where help is very far off and or cannot get to the potential patients due to scene issues (not clear etc....) Idk just a thought but love the channel bro very knowledgeable and we'll articulated all thumbs up from me keep up the awesome content and have a blessed future

      Make everyone carry around a plastic back, sterilized occlusive dressing, and tape. Tape 3/4 of the corners and leave the top left corner open make sure its sealed. Now. What would be good to go over is why its important to do that leading to hypovolemic shock, and to top that off reassessing your patient every 3-5mins

Trying to understand terminology, anatomy, and mainly figuring out the chief complaint for every patient. It's tough especially when you travel 45 minutes M, W, and F to go to class and now that I'm in clinicals mode they days have extended and so have the hours...honsetly I'm glad I've got the hang of everything and now leading my class...i got this last week and I'm done fellas...but not done yet

    I was a junior firefighter and they paid for my EMT course. If you have a local volunteer fire department talk to them. They might have explorers or juniors. If they don’t ask if they would be willing to start one. Sometimes the program fades out from lack of young people. Juniors do get second hand/used gear and senior (adult) members always go first, but it’s better than nothing.

    I believe he did not mention that in some (I believe most if not all) EMT/Paramedic classes you have to do some ride time ambulances. I have heard of this from other people and it is big a thing in my college. I did not have any prior knowledge other than some health classes in High School that only taught me and certified me in CPR. I have always wanted to be a firefighter and with that I would have to get my Paramedics and I have found that both subjects (fire science and medical/trauma) are really fun to learn! The only thing I would recommend is finding a school that has a great connection with the departments and hospitals! It makes some of the boring classes turn really fun when you are actually able to do some hands on stuff at training facilities.

    This may sound a bit crazy but trust me, I've seen it. Before deciding on a career in emergency medicine, ask yourself [ be honest ] if you can handle seeing blood and other body fluids in copious amounts. Working an ambulance or ER you will see a lot of blood, vomit, and other emissions, as well as some rather gruesome injuries. If you've seen these things and immediately had to leave or became dizzy, nauseous, etc., then EMS isn't for you.
    Most community colleges offer basic EMT classes, they aren't difficult and ordinarily require one semester to complete. Give it a try, even if you don't pursue the field the knowledge and training you receive will be of benefit to those in your life.

      @austinconrad1135 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PrepMedic I agree with you there! I live in Canada so our ski patrol teaches a different course but it's essentially the same concept. Our course is a bit above an EMR level with an emphasis on ski-related injuries but not an EMT level. I also wish we would teach to a higher level here. I feel like we cover a ton of material and almost everything an EMT would learn but just not in depth. We are branching out a bit though as we start to do more offseason event (music festivals, concerts, sports events etc). We also started training people on things like Narcan (good to have for music festivals!!). I love the videos btw! Keep em coming :)

    Something else to remember when looking to get into emergency services. Different states have different requirements and different states do not recognize certain certificates or certifications. I personally would have preferred to have the option to test out at AEMT (long story wrt our school/program) prior to paramedic; builds confidence, achieve an "intermediate" cert to fall back on, taking a building blocks approach to the education/field. That said, I'm stuck going from B to P (test next month), so it is what it is. Would recommend getting on with an actual 911 agency; some of my medical transport classmates who don't run 911 don't have the same experiences as those that do.

    Hi! I am currently a high school student about to be a senior and I started last summer working doing "dual enrollment" which is college classes for high school students (different states call it different things). Last summer I took medical term., and English. The fall semester I took anatomy and physiology 1, and math. The spring semester (last semester) I took anatomy and physiology 2, speech, and history. This semester I am taking art (my elective), next semester I will be taking the EMT class and EMT clinicals. I will turn 18 in January and will be able to get my EMT license. If you're a high school student I would talk to your counselor, or whoever created your schedule, asking them if they do that and if not I would go with what he said.

    For going emts there are somethings you can do other tanking your AP classes. Theres apps for you phone such as EMT TRAINER, EMT STUDY, EMT REVIEW(better for those who want to get their national registry) for me, i did the nations registry and got both my FL and NREMT license. The emt review is your friend to study and review on how to interact, intervien, and critically think about different situations, there are 5 chapters with 100 questions each. My personal fav is the AP app called atlas, very good buy you have to pay to get more.. theres other apps which one would behoove others if theyre going for emt or fire, is the ERG 2016. theres other stuff i have but its not necessarily needed. Just more knowledge for me lol.

    • @Tha_Monsta88
      @Tha_Monsta88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but those are quick references for those who do go into emt training such as I did. A little knowledge never hurt anyone. I actually referenced the emt trainer erg and the study one as good quick references passed onto the new emt students going into their spring semester from my squad since we were selected to be "the ones who went through emt training and to give an insight to what it takes to be an emt."
      Now for like paramedics idk about that stuff. Or if there are any helpful apps to look into other than pediatric care, And pharmacology. So yes you are right. I was told by the fire captain who also over the training of emts that it would be a useful tool if your on the road for a semi turnover for the erg part. The Emt Trainer is what i recommend because even tough its all basic stuff, its still covers pretty much all the stuff i was trained in on a basic level for an emt. It also has your nation registry sheets in there for practice. Which was our main focus on the hands on lab. It pretty much has almost everything.

    Hello from Poland here! :D It was interesting vid. In my country on the other hand we have to study on univeristy for 3 years to get the bechelors degree, and only after that we are paramedics. We don't have also a different degrees of advance to be a paramedic. I'm really interested in how many medicaments can you use, and what procedures an US paramedic can do? We have authorization to use without supervison from a doctor 47 medicaments/drugs, and do eg. cardioversion, or pacing. In our circles it's believed that we have one of the biggest permissions to do medical operations around the world, but unfortunatly we can't do eg. blood transfusion, or we can't use TXA. So again my question: what medical procedures and how many drugs an US paramedic are permitted to use? Maybe there is some document about that?

    • @PrepMedic
      @PrepMedic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! So we have around 75 medications and can perform cardioversions pacing 12 lead ekgs, rapid sequence intubation, surgical airways, IOs, CPAP and some other things. Any paramedic can give TXA and if you go to a critical care paramedic class it permits you to do chest tubes art lines and blood. Some of this depends on the region you are in because not all services will authorize you to do everything.

      @@PrepMedic Thank you for respond. So it looks like we can do the same procedures except TXA, blood transfusions and we have less medications that paramedic can give alone. Every 5 years ERC (European Resuscitation Council) release new guidelines, and in Poland they are adapted for us. I hope the new ones in 2020 will give us possibility to use at least TXA.

      Blake Ulyatt seriously, why would you? Compared to Australia the majority of US services don't pay nearly as well (want a 50% pay cut?). They're more "protocol" driven compared to us, and with no disrespect to our US cousins (I blame their bean counters), many US services are about 15 years behind Australia. You're better off trying the UK or Ireland. A lot of US EMS services still use BLS EMT level crews ffs (yep, in 2018!).

      @Muffinator You can own a gun in Australia. You just have to prove you're not the sort of crackpot to shoot a bunch of people in a shop, church or school. I'm pretty sure freedom is no worse here, nor freedom of speech.

    • @doncoleman4938

      I find it odd that in the 21st century developed country to have volunteer services in populated areas. We do have volunteers here in Australia, but they're in remote areas and only in some states. They get backed up with a helicopter crewed by a paramedic anyway.
      In towns and cities we crew our ambulances with advanced care paramedics, backed up with intensive care paramedics. Having BLS level EMTs or volunteers would be like having volunteer nurses or assistant nurses, rather than highly trained professionals in a hospital emergency department.

    Hey Sean just to let you know AEMT is actually a good stepping stone in my state. It is the first ALS level provider I have a decent expanded scope and it's expanding every year to two years with protocol updates. Also lessens the time I'll have to be in Medic school from 12-18 months down to 8 months so I'm some area's AEMT is a great way to go to get some ALS experience

    • @PrepMedic
      @PrepMedic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man! Really glad you have found it worth while. Everyone has a different path to take and what works for one person might not work for others. Even with the information you provided I would still challenge AEMT as a poor use of time and money if Paramedic/a career in EMS is the end goal. In your case why not just go paramedic? Sure, it shortens Medic school but you still end up spending the same amount of time in class with AEMT factored in. The experience you get as an AEMT doesn’t count as Paramedic experience when applying for departments that need 3 years such as flights and other high functioning ALS departments. While you are working as an AEMT you are getting payed less and ultimately when you go to paramedic school you will be on the same footing as a new grad that just went right through. I am sure the field experience will give you a leg up for a short amount of time after school but come 2 years down the road the playing field will be essentially even. The only real reason I would encourage anyone to get their AEMT would be if they are volunteering for an AEMT service or if EMS is just being used as a stepping stone to a different area of medicine.

      @@PrepMedic different strokes for different folks my kind sir. I'm full-time as a AEMT and my service values us and I know the Medics do since we lighten their load on less high acuity ALS Patients.
