Thank you for posting up an honest revue, I have looked at so many tents that were within my budget but all had a compromise, I always came back to this one, two man compact , still to set up and use it , I know it will have its own issues but the weight saving alone was a big selling point for me , thank you 👍

That was pretty exhaustive and complete review. Thank you for the time and effort, it was appreciated. I would have liked to hear how the venting option shown in the Terra Nova video would have worked out to control the condensation however. I have a North Face tent which i added a loop to, so that I could adjust the spacing and get more flow between the inner and outer tent layers. That has been effective.
Great review and I am glad you covered a lot of the variables that go into the design of this type of equipment. The people that truly go out and put their gear to varying tests will appreciate your insights. I often get the comment that the gear I review is too expensive but as you pointed out their are many ways to make something less or more expensive and the key is to not ask it to do more than it is designed to do. I do know you had many great adventures in that tent. So raise a glass of brandy and salute it, it was a faithful friend until it could protect you no more. Take care Bruce
I agree with you Sandy, so many people have lost the meaning to the word "review." They say review when they should really be saying, "first impression" or "preview" or even "unboxing." It frustrates me when I go to watch a review from someone who makes it painfully obvious they've never used the item. To me that is nothing more than, "I'm showing off some new kit" or "I'm trying to justify my expenditure of too much money." I like nothing more than a review as you have made, that being a review of a product that has been under hard use. Anything can stand up in beautiful weather, it's the nasty weather you need to know you can depend on your equipment. Your honest non-subsidized review is worth nearly as much as the product being talked about. Thank you for staying true to the review process. I own one of the very early versions of a Laser 2, which is larger but shares many features. I do up alternate toggles holding the inner to the fly, this allows a bigger gap between the two. The pegs needed replacing then too. Agreed about the wind speeds vulnerabilty, had to collapse the tent and sleep in a shed on Canna. It does need to be pitched on flat ground, not sloping, and only in sheltered or still conditions, but I still use mine after 16 years. You need to know the limits and the best way to use it. On Tiree the campsite owners let us pitch in the barn, bizarre feeling but very practical. I have no leaks or rips in the bathtub, but I also added a footprint. I set up the fly and inner together, a very useful feature. Storage under the fly is good, there is just enough room to cook closed up, but I avoid this if possible. Only one small rip in the inner, due to careless packing, with a gaffer tape repair. I agree about the condensation issues, an hour of ventilation before packing is needed, although if packed away wet, when re-erected it is usually dry enough inside for use in 10-15 mins. Very good weight and length, I have never got wet from the rain in it, but it has limitations.
do you have any tips regarding the doors ? One thing that annoys me is that when attaching the fly sheet to the inner tent using the toggle, i often end up wet. Either rain water or condesation will drip of the fly sheet and into the inner tend, have you found this too? do you have any ideas or solutions, i've actually started taking a microfibre cloth to wipe the door before i use it now. Any tips appreciated.
I have the Competition 2 and only really used it in anger on one bike packing trip a couple of years ago (got mine for £235!!) Used in late July but still suffered from overnight condensation. I have since treated both inner and outer to a spray of water proofing to see if it makes any difference. Hoping any water build up will simply bead and run down rather than collect. Hoping to get out post covid lockdown.
+KennethKramm Thanks Ken, I am sure this tent would be fine for a winter camp in TX but it is not quite upto the rigours of high level camping in the UK. I am on the lookout for a cost effective mountain tent for winter use now:)
Although I don't do tents normally, I found this review interesting and honest. So many youtubers are now doing reviews about gear they may not have used previously and/or have been sponsored in some way, perhaps a freebie in the post asking to do an "honest" review and can keep the item, how can this be an honest and impartial review?. Since my channel has grown I'm getting interest from company's wanting me to promote their products and have declined. I would only recommend a product I own or believe in. Deciding whether or not to buy this tent or the Nordisk Svalbard for windy conditions versus weight considerations ...I simply decided I'm happy to carry the extra weight of the Nordisk for two reasons: [1] Not doing any mountain marathons ever soon and [2] because it can withstand wind at Hurricane levels. I never want to be caught in a mountain or beach scenario again with my tent being shredded by the wind in the middle of a stormy night....so thanks for your honest review ...... keep them coming!
I have used one of these for the last 5 years, i think this review is pretty accurate. Its a good tent, the weight and size is very attractive. it's done me well on multiple trips, though the living space is small and so on 9-10 day trips a bit more living space would be enjoyable but thats just the pay off for lightweight. The main 2 grumbles would be the pole cover, which I believe is designed to protect the seams under it from water, its a faff, I don't like it and unless i expect rain half the time i don't bother with it. There is also very little room in the vestibule, my pack fits in, leaning up between the inner and outer and as Wiltshire man said, this leaves little room for getting changed and keeping dampness out of the inner. All in, I've had a great time with it but look forward to something a bit more comfortable. If you aim is light weight 3 season this should be good.
Have just bought Zephyros 1, non lite version. Which I thinking of sending back. Many of the flaws u point out, tally with the way I think my tent will perform, based largely on how thin the 'WC' Superflex Alloy pole is. Superflex Alloy has 3 other aliases of Aviation Aluminium, Admonised Aluminium and 7001 T6 Alloy. All the SAME pole. And u absolutley right, u cant assess a tent's value on a couple of days pitch, in either your garden or the countryside. What u said about the sleeve and zip near the hoop concerns me, as I had thought if I cudda got a stronger thicker pole from somewhere, I might keep the tent. Excellent review has helped me to decide to give terra nova a bit of a wide berth, they must have known about the condensation issues during testing but either didn’t bother to do anything about it or just didn’t care or maybe had smoke blown up their behinds by people getting free tents to review in their garden, whatever the truth doesn’t make them look a quality company. So am still seeking a UL 1 person tent, maybe the vango f10 helium or a big Agnes.
Very good review and i agree 100% about people giving reviews i think people should state if they have paid for a product and how long they have been using said item. I use the North Face Rock 2, great lightweight tent for back packing
Good review Sandy. I too have a terra nova , an old trisar when it was the baby brother to a quasar and made by Wild Country before bought over by Terra Nova. It's 22 years old and cost £170 way back then! It's the best 2 man tent I have ever owned and a semi geodesic so has stood up to whatever Scotland can throw at it from high winds driving rain and heavy snow. It did have a lifetime warrenty but not sure how long they class that as but so far no problems. I would go onto the web site and give them a call. Great bunch to deal with as have bought other stuff and very helpful.They should be able to make any repairs. I did a lot of research before buying as wanted a large vestibule, able to sit up and sleep 2 and this fitted the bill for a couple of long distance walks. If it ever dies I will cry but the quasar would be my next choice! I do also have a larger NF expedition 36 for 3/4 man /6 pole but mainly use it in winter or kayaking if not hammocking. It is meant to withstand 80mph winds but don't really want to check it out although could have last weekend due to A bi gale !! Much too heavy to carry for two so as you say get the best to suit the needs. Enjoyed the review.Cheers Mary

A very fair and objective review Sandy. For what it's worth, I've owned four Terra Nova tents over the years :- - Quasar Superlite - Bombproof mountain tent, too heavy for solo use - Solar - Their first 1-man tent. Not a really successful design - Voyager - Great 2-man tent, too heavy for one. - Voyage Superlite - Excellent design. Room for two, light enough for one. Build quality was First Class on all of them. The Solar fairly soon disappeared from the list but the others are classics and still available. Best wishes, as ever, Noel

Good honest review. I thought this tent would be 'the one' for me, but after a week long trek with a group, in dryish conditions, my tent was soaked every night with condensation, when others single skin tents weren't. the pegs are useless. Bad in wind, like you said. Claustrophobic and tight feeling inside. I ended up with pretty bad feelings towards it(in fact, I found it was worse than any tent I have owned) and sold it. Fortunately they hold their value quite well. I now have a Lunar solo, which outperforms this one for half the price. NB. I live in Australia, where a real 4 season tent isn't necessary.

Sandy I would try the msr ground hog stakes as I camp in often hard ground locations or places with tree roots. I swear by these msr ground hog stakes as they never let me down after 4 years. They have a triangle construction that makes them very rigid and resist bending. Hey weigh the same if not less then those aluminum tent stakes you are substituting for now. Give them a try my friend you can't go wrong. As for heilburg tents they are fantastic tents I believe the tent you have is of their lighter tents they make. For those types of winds you endured in your last trip you need a Akito model and really tie the guyline ropes securely and you will be fine. Also did you can "DOUBLE" The poles in the tent sleeve to make it more rigid and strong. Heilburg should easily replace the bent pole and torn tent. They have a excellent warrantee and stand behind their products. Also the two walls touching each other can be a bit of the tensioning on the set up. But just contact them they are a good company. .

Great review, Sandy. You're spot on about certain people out to make a quick buck, they don't even use the product and don't list any of the negatives. What winter tent would you recommend and I noticed you're wearing your new trail runners, what socks did you end up wearing with them on your recent hike and do you think they would work well with neoprene socks to keep your wet feet warm during the day?
I prefer the Hilton Junior Executive Suite tent. it works well in all sorts of inclement weather. The thing I like most about it is that when it's teaming with rain at 2am you can still order a burger, chips and beer without getting wet nor cold.

Interesting honest review. I do not have that tent but have heard about the extreme condensation factor of it during several different reviews. I am a subscriber of Paul Messner and he is not fond of tents that are condensation magnets either. Finding that happy medium spot in a tent and a sweet price point is GOLDEN if you can find it. The new materials and technologies are making some tents close to perfect...but at a prime price point. That lightweight middle ground is still a tough one to find.
Thanks Pamela, yes there are some very expensive tents on the market and it's often the case you get what you pay for but sometimes you can find a product that is cheaper and just as good or even better. Sometimes we can be paying for the name!
Agree that too many reviews are straight from 'momma's basement' and not from experience of use. A true warts and all review based on actual use and experience is far better. Thank you for your honest evaluation
Great review. I've got the Force Ten Helium Carbon 200 tent which has the same design as your tent and the same problem that its useless in windy conditions. I would say that any wind speed higher that 25 mph would be too high for my tent which makes the name of it a bit of a joke as I believe force ten is around 60 mph.
Hi Sandy excellent genuine review must admit i was surprised with the laser failure.i have done Tryfan in very similar conditions i camped in the small campsite near its base, The tent i used was a Marmot and it was spot on other tents on the site were failing left right and centre including aa family who had erected a large frame tent they packed up and went home in the middle of the night. So Marmot might be worth looking at mine is about 15 years old now and still all ok Alan M1TAP the armoured farmer

I just got this tent for £245 new from ultimate outdoors, I got it as a emergency tent as my walks can be over 50 miles and I always have the risk of getting to sleepy to walk having this as a backup will increase my confidence to take on longer walks

Cheers for the reply. I had an Akto a few years ago and found it too small. I use tarps now, trailstar, MID's and a MYOG flat tarp. I was just looking at what tents were out there for similar weights and this one was suggested, I have seen a Soulo in use and its very impressive and a good amount of room inside. ATB, Dave

Do you ever use a footprint under that thin floor? I have the Terra Nova, Wild Country Helios 2, which is a 600 grams heavier copy of the Solar 2 Competition and use a tarp, I got from a pound shop, under the very thin floor, when I have to pitch on rough surfaces.
Hi Sandy That was without a doubt the best review I have ever seen for the Laser Comp .... I bought it for lightweight bikepacking for which it performs wonderfully .... taking the time to vent the ends does increase airflow massively though it can be fiddly and not fun with numb fingers .... to go 4 season I pitch a DD tarp over the top .... like yourself I found the pegs useless ... however they make wonderful quadcopter arms or undercarriage rods as they'te only 1g a pop ..... I used them to build an amphibious Hubsan to terrorise ducks so nothing lost there .... Great channel and thoroughly enjoy your videos .... Cheers ..... Stoat :o)~
Found the Hilleberg more sturdy than the Terra Nova in wind and weather. Got rid of both after using the North Face Mountain 25. It is more an expedition tent than anything I would consider for backpacking

Good and thorough review, cheers. I was looking at these again as I've got one, and I wanted to see if I could fix the issues I have with pitching it. I was disappointed last night camping in the garden to test it before venturing out again (I don't use it often enough), and I started to wonder why I thought so much of it when I got it. As you mention, the main issue is the closeness of inner and outer down the length of it. There are little adjuster buckles on the connection straps at the end points, which seem to give the option of the two skins touching virtually all the time, or having the inner tent sagging down, and nowhere in between is there really anything ideal. I'm not sure if it's because it's designed to have all the inner and outer peg loops in pairs together, or what. The tent sags unless you tighten it up quite well, and then you'll find the door zip is under too much strain. I have never bothered with the pole cover or side guys - maybe they help keep it in shape. It has a lot of good points, but the most important thing in a tent is keeping inner and fly apart so you don't get condensation soaking through, or worse, the rain. Stay safe, Wiltshire Man!
It's a good tent but as you say there are downsides to it. It really does condensate quite bad unfortunately so I tend only to use it in more clement conditions. Sandy

A good honest review Sandy, I think you may have been the victim of a copyright issue mate, Terra Nova tents are still made in Derbyshire, Ive had the TN Solar for quite a few years and it was made in Britain, it's a one man and it weighs a bit more but is still quite light and small, the only time I had a problem in strong winds on Dartmoor was down to me not pegging it out securely enough, I haven't had to use guy lines before but on this occasion I should have done, the strong winds were funnelled down the small valley we were in, we only left because my mates tent broke a pole and collapsed on him, the best all round style would be a geodesic multi frame that crosses over itself for rigidity, but there very expensive, T N are top quality tents, sometimes one might have to sacrifice a little weight for the right gear, T N tents are the main tents used on arctic expeditions and on Everest, that's why I bought one, your more than welcome to borrow mine and give it a try, atb.

Good review but worth noting that some of your issues might have been fixed now. The pegs are thicker (standard thickness) and alloy. Also noticed that now the inside vents can be closed and covered with material and the outside vents can be opened and closed too. I couldn't make out if the pole rain cover has the same fixtures as yours. Great to have a long-term usage review.
Thanks. My Laser doesn't seem to have very good ventilation and now I have gone over to using the Luxe V4 which seems to suit me quite well although it is a little heavier than the laser and also quite a bit cheaper.

I have a Terra Nova Voyager, again rated at 3 seasons. Being a semi geodesic design it is extremely strong. With the addition of a couple of extra guy lines I would risk using it in winter.. Had it possibly 12 years or so. Information on line Structure: semi-geodesic Materials: Fly: Watershed R/S (5000mm HH) Floor: Waterbloc 7000mm Rated 4 season........now Even when it stated 3 season I never believed it.....Cost now £500- £600 not cheap but must be the smallest two birth in their range. My outer fly is a gorgeous Burnt Orange........Never seen another this colour. See one for sale cheap enough then buy it! If base camping in winter and require most space. I have the Berghaus Grampian bright red, 4 season, not costly, very spacious, full geodesic, heavy. Some strengthen the poles, I won't be but it's a personal choice. I have your tent also, bought cheap, if stolen no big deal,,, losing my Voyager would be a big deal. Also have a Terra Nova hoole, another spacious simple 3 season but quite strong when pegged out correctly. For stating I own 3 Terra Nova tents then that's fantastic advertising..............Worthy of a gift,,,,,,,A new Voyager footprint would be nice. Old one stolen with car. also decent pegs.
I did an "initial observation " video for a bivy sleeping system with a raised area above your head. The manufacturer actually commented on my video and expressed interest with the modifications I said I wanted to make on it. This manufacturer may comment on your video also. This seemed to hold up pretty well considering being overloaded by extreme weather conditions. You mentioned being in a named storm that set records for the entire country for wind speeds. Gale Force winds are taxing on equipment. For high winds, a lower profile may hold up better than a tent with sail area. A hooped bivy may be a consideration. I bought the Aqua Quest Single hooped Bivy. It packs into a small stuff sack that is about the same size as the sack for the Hennessy Hammock. Great review and I am glad you covered a lot of the variables that go into the design of this type of equipment. The people that truly go out and put their gear to varying tests will appreciate your insights. I often get the comment that the gear I review is too expensive but as you pointed out their are many ways to make something less or more expensive and the key is to not ask it to do more than it is designed to do.
I do know you had many great adventures in that tent. So raise a glass of brandy and salute it, it was a faithful friend until it could protect you no more.

I agree with you Sandy, so many people have lost the meaning to the word "review." They say review when they should really be saying, "first impression" or "preview" or even "unboxing." It frustrates me when I go to watch a review from someone who makes it painfully obvious they've never used the item. To me that is nothing more than, "I'm showing off some new kit" or "I'm trying to justify my expenditure of too much money." I like nothing more than a review as you have made, that being a review of a product that has been under hard use. Anything can stand up in beautiful weather, it's the nasty weather you need to know you can depend on your equipment. Your honest non-subsidized review is worth nearly as much as the product being talked about. Thank you for staying true to the review process. I own one of the very early versions of a Laser 2, which is larger but shares many features. I do up alternate toggles holding the inner to the fly, this allows a bigger gap between the two. The pegs needed replacing then too. Agreed about the wind speeds vulnerabilty, had to collapse the tent and sleep in a shed on Canna. It does need to be pitched on flat ground, not sloping, and only in sheltered or still conditions, but I still use mine after 16 years. You need to know the limits and the best way to use it. On Tiree the campsite owners let us pitch in the barn, bizarre feeling but very practical. I have no leaks or rips in the bathtub, but I also added a footprint. I set up the fly and inner together, a very useful feature. Storage under the fly is good, there is just enough room to cook closed up, but I avoid this if possible. Only one small rip in the inner, due to careless packing, with a gaffer tape repair.
I agree about the condensation issues, an hour of ventilation before packing is needed, although if packed away wet, when re-erected it is usually dry enough inside for use in 10-15 mins. Very good weight and length, I have never got wet from the rain in it, but it has limitations.
do you have any tips regarding the doors ? One thing that annoys me is that when attaching the fly sheet to the inner tent using the toggle, i often end up wet. Either rain water or condesation will drip of the fly sheet and into the inner tend, have you found this too? do you have any ideas or solutions, i've actually started taking a microfibre cloth to wipe the door before i use it now. Any tips appreciated.
I have the Competition 2 and only really used it in anger on one bike packing trip a couple of years ago (got mine for £235!!)
Used in late July but still suffered from overnight condensation. I have since treated both inner and outer to a spray of water proofing to see if it makes any difference. Hoping any water build up will simply bead and run down rather than collect. Hoping to get out post covid lockdown.

I still have the terranova but I'm using the cheap Lanshan 1 and 2 tents. The seem to work well for me and less condensation
Although I don't do tents normally, I found this review interesting and honest. So many youtubers are now doing reviews about gear they may not have used previously and/or have been sponsored in some way, perhaps a freebie in the post asking to do an "honest" review and can keep the item, how can this be an honest and impartial review?. Since my channel has grown I'm getting interest from company's wanting me to promote their products and have declined. I would only recommend a product I own or believe in. Deciding whether or not to buy this tent or the Nordisk Svalbard for windy conditions versus weight considerations ...I simply decided I'm happy to carry the extra weight of the Nordisk for two reasons: [1] Not doing any mountain marathons ever soon and [2] because it can withstand wind at Hurricane levels. I never want to be caught in a mountain or beach scenario again with my tent being shredded by the wind in the middle of a stormy night....so thanks for your honest review ...... keep them coming!

I have used one of these for the last 5 years, i think this review is pretty accurate. Its a good tent, the weight and size is very attractive. it's done me well on multiple trips, though the living space is small and so on 9-10 day trips a bit more living space would be enjoyable but thats just the pay off for lightweight. The main 2 grumbles would be the pole cover, which I believe is designed to protect the seams under it from water, its a faff, I don't like it and unless i expect rain half the time i don't bother with it. There is also very little room in the vestibule, my pack fits in, leaning up between the inner and outer and as Wiltshire man said, this leaves little room for getting changed and keeping dampness out of the inner. All in, I've had a great time with it but look forward to something a bit more comfortable. If you aim is light weight 3 season this should be good.

Have just bought Zephyros 1, non lite version. Which I thinking of sending back. Many of the flaws u point out, tally with the way I think my tent will perform, based largely on how thin the 'WC' Superflex Alloy pole is. Superflex Alloy has 3 other aliases of Aviation Aluminium, Admonised Aluminium and 7001 T6 Alloy. All the SAME pole. And u absolutley right, u cant assess a tent's value on a couple of days pitch, in either your garden or the countryside. What u said about the sleeve and zip near the hoop concerns me, as I had thought if I cudda got a stronger thicker pole from somewhere, I might keep the tent. Excellent review has helped me to decide to give terra nova a bit of a wide berth, they must have known about the condensation issues during testing but either didn’t bother to do anything about it or just didn’t care or maybe had smoke blown up their behinds by people getting free tents to review in their garden, whatever the truth doesn’t make them look a quality company. So am still seeking a UL 1 person tent, maybe the vango f10 helium or a big Agnes.

Good review Sandy. I too have a terra nova , an old trisar when it was the baby brother to a quasar and made by Wild Country before bought over by Terra Nova. It's 22 years old and cost £170 way back then! It's the best 2 man tent I have ever owned and a semi geodesic so has stood up to whatever Scotland can throw at it from high winds driving rain and heavy snow. It did have a lifetime warrenty but not sure how long they class that as but so far no problems. I would go onto the web site and give them a call. Great bunch to deal with as have bought other stuff and very helpful.They should be able to make any repairs. I did a lot of research before buying as wanted a large vestibule, able to sit up and sleep 2 and this fitted the bill for a couple of long distance walks. If it ever dies I will cry but the quasar would be my next choice! I do also have a larger NF expedition 36 for 3/4 man /6 pole but mainly use it in winter or kayaking if not hammocking. It is meant to withstand 80mph winds but don't really want to check it out although could have last weekend due to A bi gale !! Much too heavy to carry for two so as you say get the best to suit the needs. Enjoyed the review.Cheers Mary

I am looking for a winter tent option now. A geodesic would be nice especially if the weight is manageable. I will keep the Laser for lightweight backpack camping throughout the rest of the year. After my experience in Snowdonia I now realise how important it is to have a tent which is fit for purpose. If Ant and Marks tents had failed we would have been in a right pickle.

For what it's worth, I've owned four Terra Nova tents over the years :-
- Quasar Superlite - Bombproof mountain tent, too heavy for solo use
- Solar - Their first 1-man tent. Not a really successful design
- Voyager - Great 2-man tent, too heavy for one.
- Voyage Superlite - Excellent design. Room for two, light enough for one.
Build quality was First Class on all of them.
The Solar fairly soon disappeared from the list but the others are classics and still available.

Good honest review. I thought this tent would be 'the one' for me, but after a week long trek with a group, in dryish conditions, my tent was soaked every night with condensation, when others single skin tents weren't. the pegs are useless. Bad in wind, like you said. Claustrophobic and tight feeling inside. I ended up with pretty bad feelings towards it(in fact, I found it was worse than any tent I have owned) and sold it. Fortunately they hold their value quite well. I now have a Lunar solo, which outperforms this one for half the price. NB. I live in Australia, where a real 4 season tent isn't necessary.

Thanks for the honest review. I'm surprised you kept the tent even if it wasn't what you were looking for. I'm also surprised it's made in China considering the high selling price.
Sandy I would try the msr ground hog stakes as I camp in often hard ground locations or places with tree roots. I swear by these msr ground hog stakes as they never let me down after 4 years. They have a triangle construction that makes them very rigid and resist bending. Hey weigh the same if not less then those aluminum tent stakes you are substituting for now. Give them a try my friend you can't go wrong. As for heilburg tents they are fantastic tents I believe the tent you have is of their lighter tents they make. For those types of winds you endured in your last trip you need a Akito model and really tie the guyline ropes securely and you will be fine. Also did you can "DOUBLE" The poles in the tent sleeve to make it more rigid and strong. Heilburg should easily replace the bent pole and torn tent. They have a excellent warrantee and stand behind their products. Also the two walls touching each other can be a bit of the tensioning on the set up. But just contact them they are a good company. .

Great review, Sandy. You're spot on about certain people out to make a quick buck, they don't even use the product and don't list any of the negatives. What winter tent would you recommend and I noticed you're wearing your new trail runners, what socks did you end up wearing with them on your recent hike and do you think they would work well with neoprene socks to keep your wet feet warm during the day?
I prefer the Hilton Junior Executive Suite tent. it works well in all sorts of inclement weather.
The thing I like most about it is that when it's teaming with rain at 2am you can still order a burger, chips and beer without getting wet nor cold.

Interesting honest review. I do not have that tent but have heard about the extreme condensation factor of it during several different reviews. I am a subscriber of Paul Messner and he is not fond of tents that are condensation magnets either. Finding that happy medium spot in a tent and a sweet price point is GOLDEN if you can find it. The new materials and technologies are making some tents close to perfect...but at a prime price point. That lightweight middle ground is still a tough one to find.

Great review. I've got the Force Ten Helium Carbon 200 tent which has the same design as your tent and the same problem that its useless in windy conditions. I would say that any wind speed higher that 25 mph would be too high for my tent which makes the name of it a bit of a joke as I believe force ten is around 60 mph.

Hi Sandy excellent genuine review must admit i was surprised with the laser failure.i have done Tryfan in very similar conditions i camped in the small campsite near its base,
The tent i used was a Marmot and it was spot on other tents on the site were failing left right and centre including aa family who had erected a large frame tent they packed up and went home in the middle of the night. So Marmot might be worth looking at mine is about 15 years old now and still all ok

I just got this tent for £245 new from ultimate outdoors, I got it as a emergency tent as my walks can be over 50 miles and I always have the risk of getting to sleepy to walk having this as a backup will increase my confidence to take on longer walks

For a little more money the Hilleberg Soulo is a fine 4 season tent that will last many years. Expensive though but it will last.
Cheers for the reply. I had an Akto a few years ago and found it too small. I use tarps now, trailstar, MID's and a MYOG flat tarp. I was just looking at what tents were out there for similar weights and this one was suggested,

Do you ever use a footprint under that thin floor? I have the Terra Nova, Wild Country Helios 2, which is a 600 grams heavier copy of the Solar 2 Competition and use a tarp, I got from a pound shop, under the very thin floor, when I have to pitch on rough surfaces.

That was without a doubt the best review I have ever seen for the Laser Comp .... I bought it for lightweight bikepacking for which it performs wonderfully .... taking the time to vent the ends does increase airflow massively though it can be fiddly and not fun with numb fingers .... to go 4 season I pitch a DD tarp over the top .... like yourself I found the pegs useless ... however they make wonderful quadcopter arms or undercarriage rods as they'te only 1g a pop ..... I used them to build an amphibious Hubsan to terrorise ducks so nothing lost there .... Great channel and thoroughly enjoy your videos .... Cheers ..... Stoat :o)~
Found the Hilleberg more sturdy than the Terra Nova in wind and weather. Got rid of both after using the North Face Mountain 25. It is more an expedition tent than anything I would consider for backpacking

No worries. The laser is still a good tent but there are better ones like the Hilleberg Akto etc but you will pay a lot more money for them.

Utter reliability is something that very light weight tents do. I have found another tent that I will try soon. It's called the Mil tec recon one. I will buy one and try that. It is cheap but could be a good buy.

Good and thorough review, cheers. I was looking at these again as I've got one, and I wanted to see if I could fix the issues I have with pitching it. I was disappointed last night camping in the garden to test it before venturing out again (I don't use it often enough), and I started to wonder why I thought so much of it when I got it. As you mention, the main issue is the closeness of inner and outer down the length of it. There are little adjuster buckles on the connection straps at the end points, which seem to give the option of the two skins touching virtually all the time, or having the inner tent sagging down, and nowhere in between is there really anything ideal. I'm not sure if it's because it's designed to have all the inner and outer peg loops in pairs together, or what. The tent sags unless you tighten it up quite well, and then you'll find the door zip is under too much strain. I have never bothered with the pole cover or side guys - maybe they help keep it in shape. It has a lot of good points, but the most important thing in a tent is keeping inner and fly apart so you don't get condensation soaking through, or worse, the rain. Stay safe, Wiltshire Man!
It's a good tent but as you say there are downsides to it. It really does condensate quite bad unfortunately so I tend only to use it in more clement conditions.

A good honest review Sandy, I think you may have been the victim of a copyright issue mate, Terra Nova tents are still made in Derbyshire, Ive had the TN Solar for quite a few years and it was made in Britain, it's a one man and it weighs a bit more but is still quite light and small, the only time I had a problem in strong winds on Dartmoor was down to me not pegging it out securely enough, I haven't had to use guy lines before but on this occasion I should have done, the strong winds were funnelled down the small valley we were in, we only left because my mates tent broke a pole and collapsed on him, the best all round style would be a geodesic multi frame that crosses over itself for rigidity, but there very expensive, T N are top quality tents, sometimes one might have to sacrifice a little weight for the right gear, T N tents are the main tents used on arctic expeditions and on Everest, that's why I bought one, your more than welcome to borrow mine and give it a try, atb.

Good review but worth noting that some of your issues might have been fixed now. The pegs are thicker (standard thickness) and alloy. Also noticed that now the inside vents can be closed and covered with material and the outside vents can be opened and closed too.
I couldn't make out if the pole rain cover has the same fixtures as yours.

Thanks. My Laser doesn't seem to have very good ventilation and now I have gone over to using the Luxe V4 which seems to suit me quite well although it is a little heavier than the laser and also quite a bit cheaper.

I have a Terra Nova Voyager, again rated at 3 seasons. Being a semi geodesic design it is extremely strong. With the addition of a couple of extra guy lines I would risk using it in winter.. Had it possibly 12 years or so. Information on line Structure: semi-geodesic

Even when it stated 3 season I never believed it.....Cost now £500- £600 not cheap but must be the smallest two birth in their range.
My outer fly is a gorgeous Burnt Orange........Never seen another this colour.

If base camping in winter and require most space. I have the Berghaus Grampian bright red, 4 season, not costly, very spacious, full geodesic, heavy. Some strengthen the poles, I won't be but it's a personal choice.
I have your tent also, bought cheap, if stolen no big deal,,, losing my Voyager would be a big deal.
Also have a Terra Nova hoole, another spacious simple 3 season but quite strong when pegged out correctly.
For stating I own 3 Terra Nova tents then that's fantastic advertising..............Worthy of a gift,,,,,,,A new Voyager footprint would be nice. Old one stolen with car. also decent pegs.
I did an "initial observation " video for a bivy sleeping system with a raised area above your head. The manufacturer actually commented on my video and expressed interest with the modifications I said I wanted to make on it. This manufacturer may comment on your video also.
This seemed to hold up pretty well considering being overloaded by extreme weather conditions. You mentioned being in a named storm that set records for the entire country for wind speeds. Gale Force winds are taxing on equipment. For high winds, a lower profile may hold up better than a tent with sail area. A hooped bivy may be a consideration. I bought the Aqua Quest Single hooped Bivy. It packs into a small stuff sack that is about the same size as the sack for the Hennessy Hammock.
