  • Welcome back to another Video! In this review I am looking at the well-known CrossCountry's Class 170 Turbostar. My journey covers the route between Cambridge and Leicester.
These trains may not be very new, but they have proved to be reliable over many years. It's just that CrossCountry may need to take a little better care of them as they age... Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

Interesting video Max and maybe you could consider once everything is available (food, etc) giving what alternatives are available for each trip and the cost. Would put the price charged in perspective. Thanks.

I certainly agree the interiors of XC Turbostars have passed the use by date. I don’t think the legroom or the seating reflects the length of the journeys the trains do. XC seems to be a poor cousin imho.

I probably would think that CrossCountry should operate from Norwich to Birmingham New Street, Cardiff Central, Shrewsbury, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Sheffield.

I take it CrossCountry have a habit of trying to cram in as many seats as possible, as my most recent bash on one of their Turbostars was from Cardiff to Newport (had a few rides on them between Audley End and Cambridge/Ely over a decade ago but I was a kid back then) and the legroom was tight as you said, even for my modest height of 5'9. However, much more recently I travelled on a Northern 170 from Hull to Scarborough (also had two on the Harrogate line with a break in Knaresborough) and they had much better legroom in comparison. Only logical explanation must be the difference in number of seats; Northern (ex-Scotrail) variants have less seats so legroom can be spaced out much better.

5 of the Northern ex Scotrail sets have ex first class seats retained still but lamps and curtains removed

So to get to Cambridge to Leicester do we get on to a different train when it comes to Peterborough or stay on the same one

Actually, there are 9 first class seats at one end of the train.
